Under the Rising Sun: Difference Faces during the Japanese Occupation
The Japanese occupation of the Philippines occurred between 1942 and 1945, when
Imperial japan occupied Commonwealth of the Philippines during World War II. The invasion of
the Philippines started on December 8, 1941, ten hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Douglas
MacArthur was ordered out, leaving his men at Corregidor on the night of March 11, 1942.
Japan occupied Philippines for over three years until the surrender of Japan. According to Cal
(2018), MacArthur made good on his promise of “I shall return” when the allied forces he led
made a historic landing on Leyte Island on Oct. 20, 1944 and liberated the Philippines from the
Japanese colonization resulted to deaths, violence and destruction of cities and lives of
many Filipino. As per Hays (2008), by the time the war ended, 320,000 Japanese occupation
troops on the Philippines had died. Of an American force of 300,000 that occupied the
archipelago, 15,000 died and 48,000 were wounded, The hardest hits were taken by the people of
the Philippines. The Philippines lost more than five percent of its total population (1 million dead
The presence of war and violence are still happening at the present day in the Philippines.
Violence against women and child abuse are still rampant nowadays. Daily local news always
features stories of rape amd murder of women and children all over the country .As stated by
Rodriguez (2015), Violence Against Women (VAM) is linked with the unequal power
relationship between women and men, resulting from society's misinformed views on gender and
sexuality, according to the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW). Although the government
recognizes VAW as a “pervasive social problem” and sets necessary policies and programs in
place, several Filipino women and girls continue to experience different forms of abuse every
day. There’s not quite difference during the Japanese colonization era and today as the presence
of war and violence still exist. Philippines is still experiencing the same events that happened
before. Years ago, a war in Marawi had emerged resulting to a non-functional city. As reported
in amnesty.org (2017), Philippine armed forces detained and ill-treated fleeing civilians, and also
engaged in looting. Their extensive bombing of militant-held areas of Marawi city wiped out
entire neighbourhoods and killed civilians, highlighting the need for an investigation into its
compliance with international humanitarian law. Guns and other deadly weapons are still being
used to instill force and authority.
The Philippines suffered great loss of lives and tremendous physical destruction during
Japanese colonization. A lot has suffered from the maltreatment of Japanese people especially
the women and the children who were the victims of violence and abuse. We are connected to
the Filipino people who suffered during Japanese occupation. History connects with the present.
It is important to know the legacies of the past in the present to help us recognize what the
Filipinos went through under the hands of the Japanese Philippines has attained freedom but has
not yet achieved peace as peace means freedom from disturbances. We must study and learn our
history. Studying our history is important because it allows us to understand our past, which in
turn allows us to understand our present.
