1. PURPOSE
a. To ensure correct and safe operation of the equipment
b. To maximize equipment life through correct operations and maintenance
2. SCOPE
a. This procedure refers to all persons directly or indirectly involved with the
use of this equipment
b. This procedure also refers to the supervision of those persons directly or
indirectly involved with the use of this equipment
3. OBJECTIVES
a. To keep the equipment in the best possible condition in accordance with
manufacturers and company specifications
b. To extend the life of the equipment for as long as possible through correct
operation and servicing
c. To service the equipment in accordance with the manufacturers and
company specifications
d. To ensure the safety and well-being of all those persons involved directly or
indirectly with the operations of the equipment
4. DEFINITIONS
a. Welding equipment - refers to machines used for
i. Oxy / Acetylene gas welding
ii. Inert gas welding
5. RESPONSIBILITIES
a. All persons involved directly or indirectly with the operations of the machines
b. All supervision involved with the equipment operations
6. SAFE OPERATING PROCEDURE
(See Annexure 1)
7. PROCEDURE REVIEW
The procedure will be reviewed annually or at the interval specified on the title
block/cover page at the time of issue (see Annexure 2).

Records to be kept on the basis of this document. (See Annexure 3)

ANNEXURE 1
a. Pre-operation
i. Ensure recommended and correct PPE is worn
ii. Check condition of the welding equipment
iii. Understand and prepare for the job in hand
iv. Ensure security of the work piece before commencement
v. Ensure work area is clear of obstacles, people and other equipment
which may impede the operation or safety
vi. Ensure that protective screens are positioned
vii. Ensure the fire extinguisher equipment is in place and readily
available
viii. Ensure that any hot work permits are issued and in place
b. Starting
i. Ensure gauges are correctly coupled without leaks
ii. Ensure flash back arresters are fitted and operational
iii. Ensure torch handle valves are closed
iv. Open gas bottle valves and set regulator pressures
v. On the torch open the acetylene valve and light up
vi. Adjust flame
vii. On the torch open the oxygen valve slowly and adjust to correct flame
viii. Ensure work area is still clear
ix. Commence welding operations
c. Finishing
i. Ensure hot work pieces are kept clear of people, other equipment and
flammable items
ii. Stowe pipes and welding equipment away
iii. Clear work area of tools, materials and equipment
iv. Clean work area
