Why Books are Important for Us?

A wise man once said, “learning without book means nothing.’ In my opinion this statement
is true. Why do I say that? This is for several reasons.

Firstly, books are important because they develop the minds of people who read them. Even
if you don’t agree with what an author has done in a book, you can at least have formed
your own ideas on what would have been better. This leads to critical thinking skills. These
critical thinking skills are a necessity for the development of cultures.

Secondly, book contains so much more than just the story. They record facts. They review
history. Books are the documentations of themes that relate to everyone. You can even
learn about a period in history just looking at what books were popular and published during
that time. For instance, the classic tales of two cities by Charles dickens is set in the French
revolution era.

The last thing I’ll say is that books are essential to life because they do not only carry
knowledge, but they also entertain us. They entertain us with stories ranging from mystery

3
and drama to comedy, adventures and autobiographies. In other word, you can read book
about anything. These possibilities are limitless and that is one of the many lessons you can
learn from reading books.

Based on the reason listed above, it is obvious that books have a great influence in our
lives. Without book we may learn nothing.

1. All of the following are stated about the important thing about books, except…
A. Books don’t carry knowledge
B. Books develop the minds of people who read them
C. Books entertain us with stories.
D. Books are the documentations of themes that relate to everyone

2. The word “Limitless” in paragraph 4th is closest in meaning to…

A. Obstruction
B. Inexhaustible
C. Confine
D. Ceiling

3. What does writer suggest if we disagree to book with what an author has done in a
book?
A. To make your own book
B. To contrive your own better idea
C. To develop culture
D. To make critical book as answer

4. What idea does writer want to convey in text?

A. Books are important
B. Books have a great influence in our lives
C. Books are the documentations of themes
D. Possibilities of books are limitless

The role of parent in assisting and directing children in using computer is very necessary.
Installation of software monitor such as key logger which has function to watch and note all
activities relating to keyboard usage is helpful but not enough to protect children from

We can not prevent children from using computer because it is multifunctional. However,
many parents worry about what their kids do in front of the computer; whether they are doing
homework or even just playing games, or spending all time to surf internet which is the
materials do not fit with his age. There is a tendency, especially teenagers, to become

computers needs to be done from time to time.

Activity 8. Reading

Read the following article and write the main ideas of each paragraph in the text. One
has been done for you as an example.

Why Students should Stop Cheating

People say that corruption begins with small

practices of dishonesty in daily life. This is very
apparent in school. The pressure to pass test has
led many students to cheat during tests. This
practice should be discouraged as cheating has no
benefit for students.

First, by cheating students fail to use their own

intelligence. They might underestimate the actual
abilities due to anxiety and fear of failure. Cheating keeps students from understanding
their abilities and potentials. They might actually be able to pass the test if they study hard.

Second, cheating on other students leads to dependency. Students who don't prepare for
test well and cheat on other students will get even more anxious when others can help them.

Third, when students cheat, they are actually fooling and lying to themselves. If this
continues, they will be led into the habit of doing anything to get they want, even if it means
doing morally questionable acts. This habit is what starts corrupt practices. Cheating during
tests is a small form of corruption, but as time passes, it can lead to bigger forms.

Based on those reasons we can conclude that cheating is a bad habit that should be
discouraged in students.

Paragraph Main Idea

1 A statement that cheating gives no benefit for students.
