Activity 4.

A wise man once said, “learning without book means nothing.’ In my opinion this statement
is true. Why do I say that? This is for several reasons.
Firstly, books are important because they develop the minds of people who read them. Even
if you don’t agree with what an author has done in a book, you can at least have formed
your own ideas on what would have been better. This leads to critical thinking skills. These
critical thinking skills are a necessity for the development of cultures.
Secondly, book contains so much more than just the story. They record facts. They review
history. Books are the documentations of themes that relate to everyone. You can even
learn about a period in history just looking at what books were popular and published during
that time. For instance, the classic tales of two cities by Charles dickens is set in the French
revolution era.
The last thing I’ll say is that books are essential to life because they do not only carry
knowledge, but they also entertain us. They entertain us with stories ranging from mystery
3
and drama to comedy, adventures and autobiographies. In other word, you can read book
about anything. These possibilities are limitless and that is one of the many lessons you can
learn from reading books.
Based on the reason listed above, it is obvious that books have a great influence in our
lives. Without book we may learn nothing.

Activity 5. Reading
Read the following text and answer the questions that follow.
Computer and internet are useful as well as powerful. Information about healthy and safe
usage of computer and Internet, especially for children, should be owned by each family.
Computer connected to the Internet is powerful way to socialize with others. It can be good
but also bad effect. Recently we hear a lot of children get the advantage of social networking
sites but we often see the news about the disadvantage of it for children. Health and safety
of computer and Internet usage should continue to be campaigned.
The role of parent in assisting and directing children in using computer is very necessary.
Installation of software monitor such as key logger which has function to watch and note all
activities relating to keyboard usage is helpful but not enough to protect children from
potential harms. Children tend to hide what they have done in front of the computer to their
parent. They see that all of they have done are their privacy and no one may know.
4
We can not prevent children from using computer because it is multifunctional. However,
many parents worry about what their kids do in front of the computer; whether they are doing
homework or even just playing games, or spending all time to surf internet which is the
materials do not fit with his age. There is a tendency, especially teenagers, to become
acquainted with many strangers outside. The lack parental supervision of children’s
activities is likely to pose a potential danger to them. So parental monitor against the use of
computers needs to be done from time to time.

Activity 8. Reading
Read the following article and write the main ideas of each paragraph in the text. One
has been done for you as an example.
Second, cheating on other students leads to dependency. Students who don't prepare for
test well and cheat on other students will get even more anxious when others can help them.
Third, when students cheat, they are actually fooling and lying to themselves. If this
continues, they will be led into the habit of doing anything to get they want, even if it means
doing morally questionable acts. This habit is what starts corrupt practices. Cheating during
tests is a small form of corruption, but as time passes, it can lead to bigger forms.
Based on those reasons we can conclude that cheating is a bad habit that should be
discouraged in students.
Remember!
A group of sentences or a single sentence that forms a unit makes a paragraph. It doesn't
matter whether it is long or short.

Activity 9.

1. Recreational reading offers huge benefits, not only the children's cognitive
development but also to their character development. Children develop language skills
faster when they are encouraged to initially do “light reading”, such as folk tales,
magazines, comics, simplified novels and story books. Free reading in the form of
illustrated light reading materials has been proven to stimulate children's imagination
and creativity, making them in appreciative and critical, thereby encouraging them to
read advanced reading material.
2. COPD is often caused by smoking. The things secondhand smoke or someone else’s
smoke, air pollution, chemical fumes, a lot of gas or other things that bother the lungs
and airways over time can also cause COPD. Some people may have a genetic
condition that increases their chance of getting COPD.
3. Car crashes are the top killer of American teenagers. Most of the crashes result from
distracted driving – not paying attention to the road. If you're texting while driving you
