PART A: READING COMPREHENSION (17 MARKS)

Read the following passage and answer all the questions that follow.

The Wonders of Honey

I Honey is a sweet liquid made by honeybees using the nectar of flowering plants
through the complex process of regurgitation. It is stored in the beehive as a
primary food source. Honey is made up of glucose, fructose, and several essential
minerals and is also fairly rich in vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, and B6. Due to the
presence of powerful antiseptic, antibacterial and healing properties, honey is 5
used as medicine to treat many common health ailments.

II One of the greatest benefits of honey is it can instantly boost energy levels. This
is due to its natural sugar which provides a healthy source of calories and
energy. Athletes who often suffer from muscle fatigue are encouraged to add
some honey into their drinking water. This honey-water drink can delay fatigue 10
and increase the athletes’ performance as well as their endurance levels.
Researchers explain that glucose found in honey is absorbed instantly by the
body and provides immediate energy, while fructose is absorbed more slowly,
thus providing sustained energy to the body.

III Even though honey contains simple sugars, it is not the same as white sugar or 15
artificial sweeteners. Experts claim that people who suffer from diabetes can
enjoy it without any problem. In fact, honey can help regulate blood sugar
levels as some types of honey have a low hypoglycemic index. This means when
such types of honey are consumed, they will not cause a surge in blood sugar
levels. Those suffering from Type 1 diabetes should make it a point to eat one 20
tablespoon of honey daily because the minerals, vitamins and antioxidant
properties in honey are highly beneficial. Plus, as it is sweeter, you are likely to
use a lesser amount of honey than sugar.

IV Several studies have found that honey is a far more effective remedy for
coughs compared to many over-the-counter cough medicines. Honey has strong 25
antibacterial properties that help soothe sore throats and kill the bacteria that
cause the infection. To get a quick relief from coughing, mix one tablespoon of

honey with some freshly squeezed lemon juice and drink this solution at regular
intervals. Another alternative is to mix honey, lemon juice and a pinch of salt in a
glass of lukewarm water and use it to gargle.
30
Additionally, honey has natural antiseptic, antibacterial and antimicrobial
V properties. These properties help disinfect wounds and cuts keeping them free
from infection and promote speedy healing. After gently cleaning the wound or cut
with lukewarm water and mild soap, applying a layer of honey on the affected
area and covering the area fully with a bandage can do the trick.
35
Hence, as we can see, owing to its numerous benefits, it is important that we
VI keep a bottle of honey at home at all times. It can be a quick solution and relief for
many health complaints and helps to keep us healthy.

Kellie’s Castle
I In 1870, William Kellie Smith, at the age of 20, left his home in Kellas for Malaya
in search of career opportunities. Immediately after his arrival, he met an estate
owner, Alma Baker, who was seeking an assistant to help him in the construction
of public roads in South Perak. From then on, Smith took advantage of several
business opportunities and started various business ventures such as rubber tree 5
plantations and tin mining companies. He had started to build his own empire.
After a short while, Smith managed to own the Kinta Kellas Estate and Kinta
Kellas Tin Dredging Company. He was also able to purchase a 960-acre piece of
land for his rubber plantation and home in Batu Gajah, Perak.

Upon his success in rubber plantations and tin mining, Smith returned to Scotland 10
II in 1903 to marry his sweetheart, Agnes. He brought her back to Malaya and later
that year they were blessed with a daughter, Helen. In 1915, as a symbol of love,
Smith began to plan the construction of a mansion after the birth of his son,
Anthony. He also desired his new mansion to be reminiscent of his home back in
Scotland. The plans of the mansion were grand and luxurious as the mansion was 15
initially meant to be the centre for the wealthy colonial planters and administrators
to socialise. It was built with a six-storey tower, magnificent columns and a wine
cellar. There were also to be a rooftop courtyard for holding parties, a helicopter
landing space and an elevator to connect the underground tunnel to the top floor.
The elevator was, at that time, the first in the country. 20

Smith’s intense fascination with the Hindu religion and India led him to incorporate
III these elements in building his mansion. Seventy Indian workers from Madras
South India were enlisted as skilled labourers for the construction of the mansion.
The bricks and marble were also brought all the way from India. Unfortunately,
during the period of construction, Smith ran into a major setback. A mysterious 25

illness, called the Spanish Flu, broke out in the early 1920s and caused the death
of many of his workers.

IV Smith was then told to build a temple to appease the gods. Thus a Hindu temple

was built 1500 metres from the castle for the deity to protect the people who lived
on the property. An underground tunnel was also built beneath the mansion as a 30
secret passageway to the temple. Soon after the temple was completely built, the
construction of the mansion resumed.

V However, in December 1962, the construction of the mansion came to a halt with
the unexpected death of William Kellie Smith due to pneumonia during his trip to
Lisbon. After his death, Smith’s family decided to go back to Scotland. The estate 35
on which the mansion was located was then sold to a British company called
Harrisons and Crossfield. The mansion too became part of the deal in the selling
of the estate.

VI Today, this unfinished mansion, now famously known to locals and tourists as
Kellie’s Castle, has become one of the attractions in Perak. It stands through the 40
test of time, symbolizing the pioneering spirit of the early colonialists. It also
depicts the romanticism of a bygone era.
