General Chemistry

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Define the following:

Organic Chemistry

-Organic chemistry is a branch of chemistry that studies the structure, properties

and reactions of organic compounds, which contain carbon in covalent bonding.

Inorganic Chemistry

-deals with synthesis and behavior of inorganic and organometallic compounds.

This field covers all chemical compounds except the myriad of organic compounds,
which are the subjects of organic chemistry.

Physical Chemistry

- is the study of macroscopic, and particulate phenomena in chemical systems in

terms of the principles, practices, and concepts of physics such as motion, energy,
force, time, thermodynamics, quantum chemistry, statistical mechanics, analytical
dynamics and chemical equilibrium.

Analytical Chemistry

-Analytical chemistry studies and uses instruments and methods used to

separate, identify, and quantify matter.
Biochemistry

-is the study of chemical processes within and relating to living organisms.
Biochemical processes give rise to the complexity of life. For instance, in every living
cell, there is a crucial biological process, called respiration.

Nuclear Chemistry

-Nuclear chemistry is the sub-field of chemistry dealing with radioactivity, nuclear

processes, and transformations in the nuclei of atoms, such as nuclear transmutation
and nuclear properties.

Electro Chemistry

-Electrochemistry is the branch of physical chemistry that studies the relationship

between electricity, as a measurable and quantitative phenomenon, and identifiable
chemical change, with either electricity considered an outcome of a particular chemical
change or vice versa.

Industrial Chemistry

-Industrial inorganic chemistry includes subdivisions of the chemical industry that

manufacture inorganic products on a large scale such as the heavy inorganics (chlor-
alkalis, sulfuric acid, sulfates) and fertilizers (potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus
products) as well as segments of fine chemicals that are used to produce high purity
inorganics on a much smaller scale.
