A race car accelerates uniformly from 18.5 m/s to 46.1 m/s in 2.47 seconds. Determine the acceleration of the car
Ans: a = 11.2 m/s/s

Rocket-powered sleds are used to test the human response to acceleration. If a rocket-powered sled is accelerated to
a speed of 444 m/s in 1.83 seconds, then what is the acceleration. Ans. a = 243 m/s/s

A two-stage rocket accelerates from rest at +3.57 m/s/s for 6.82 seconds. It then accelerates at +2.98 m/s/s for
another 5.90 seconds. After the second stage, it enters into a state of free fall. Determine:
• the maximum speed after the first stage Ans 24.3 m/s
• the maximum speed after the second stage Ans 41.9 m/s

A remote control car is driven along a straight track at 2 m/s. The child controlling the car then activates the toy's
turbo mode so that, 3 seconds later, the car's speed is 3.2 m/s. Find its average acceleration. Ans 0.4 m/s/s

Shortly after, the remote control car in the previous example exits turbo mode, slowing from 3.2 m/s back to 2 m/s
in 2 seconds. Find the car's average acceleration over this interval. Ans -0.6 m/s/s

One second after being thrown straight down, a rock is falling at 20 m/s. How fast will it be falling 2 seconds later?
Ans -39.62 m/s

Instantaneous Speed - the speed at any given instant in time.

Average Speed - the average of all instantaneous speeds; found simply by a distance/time ratio.

While on vacation, Lisa Carr traveled a total distance of 440 km. Her trip took 4 hours. What was her average
speed? Ans 110 km/h

A car travels at 25 m/s for 100 s. How far did the car travel? Ans 2500 m

How long does it take a car to travel 250 km if it’s speed is 100 km/h? Ans 2.5 h

Using both graphs below.

What is the average velocity at 2.5 seconds? What is the instantaneous velocity at 2.5 seconds?
Ans: -6.2 m/s, -17.5 m/s

An object's velocity during a 10 second time interval is shown by the graph below:

a.) Determine the object's total distance traveled.

b.) At t = 0, the object's position is x = 2 m. Find the object's position at t = 2, t = 4, t = 7, and t = 10.
c.) What is the object's acceleration at the following times: t = 1, t = 3, and t = 6.
d.) Sketch the corresponding acceleration vs. time graph from t = 0 to t = 10.

a) 17.5 m
b) 5 m, 11 m, 15.5 m, 11.5 m (don’t forget at t=0, distance = 2 m)
c) 1.5 m/s/s, 0 m/s/s, -1 m/s/s
