Theatre is a collaborative art form which brings

all together as one. Performers may
communicate this experience to the audience
through combinations of gesture, speech,
song, music, and dance.
The Philippine theater plays a significant role on
upholding Filipino culture and tradition. It
showcases the magnificence and
talent Filipinos have. Moreover, it seeks out to
amuse people and as well as conveys knowledge
through telling a story in an artistic manner.

PHILIPPINE THEATER
Philippine theater plays an important role on
promoting Filipino culture and heritage. It
showcases the beauty and talent Filipinos have.
Furthermore, it seeks to entertain people and as
well as imparts knowledge through telling a story
in a creative way. Below are some classic
theatrical performances in Philippine theater.

Komedya

Komedya comes from 16 th century Spanish

comedia (play). It is a play written in verse which
uses traditional methods of the marcha for
entrance or exit, batalla (choreographed fighting)
and magia (magical effects). It is one of the
theatrical traditions in the Philippines used by the
Spanish as a method to spread Christianity. This
theatrical form describes the conflicts of
Christians and Muslims.

Two Types of Komedya

3. Secular Komedya
4. Religious Komedya

Secular Komedya
Usually performed in town celebrations. An
example of this is the Moro-moro that is
popularized in 1600. It uses stories that revolve
around kings, queens, princesses, prince,
animals, and supernatural beings. Most of the
time it portrays the clash between Christians
and Muslims.

Religious Komedya
Mostly performed to enhance religious festivities.
It focuses on the life of religious icons (Jesus
Christ, St. Michael etc.) Examples are Siete
Palabras, Senakulo, etc.

Sarswela
The Sarswela is a type of melodrama, usually in
three acts, that uses alternately spoken and
sung words. It was the Spanish influence that
started the sarswela, but it was also this
colonization that led Filipinos to incorporate
nationalistic overtones in the art. Walang Sugat is
one of the most famous sarswela in the country.

Bodabil
Another stage show that became popular during
the Japanese period based on the French
vaudeville. These were called stage show during
Japanese occupation and later a variety show.
This form of theater was an American import in
the pre-war era but became uniquely Filipino with
the indigenization of the name. Like its American
counterpart, bodabil featured a variety of
musical numbers, comedic and dramatic skits,
and song and dance numbers.
