THICKNESS CALCULATION FOR SHELL PLATES

Sl.No. Description Formulae Remarks / References

As Per Clause UG – 27 (C), Page 19 Of
A) Cylindrical Shell Thickness Under Internal Pressure : ASME SEC VIII. DIV – 1(2007)
The minimum thickness or maximum allowable working pressure
of cylindrical shells shall be the greater thickness or lesser
pressure as given by (1) or (2) below.
1) Circumferential Stress (Longitudinal Joints):
When the thickness does not exceed one – half of the inside
radius, or P does not exceed 0.385SE, the following formula shall
apply:
As per Cl. UG-27, Page No. 19, ASME
The minimum thickness required of shell is t = P x R / ( S x E - 0.6 x P ) Section-VIII. Div. I.(2007)
Where,
t = minimum required thickness of shell, in mm.
P = internal design pressure in Kpa.
R = inside radius of the shell course under consideration, in mm.
S = maximum allowable stress value in Kpa,
E = joint efficiency

Therefore minimum required thickness of shell, in mm t = 686.46 x 425 / ( 96108.5 x 0.85 - 0.6 x 686.462 )
t = 3.59 mm

2) Longitudinal Stress (Circumferencial Joint):

When the thickness does not exceed one - half of the inside
radius, or p does not exceed 1.25SE, the following formulas shall
apply:
As per Cl. UG-27, Page No. 19, ASME
The minimum thickness required of shell is t = P x R / ( 2S x E + 0.4 x P ) Section-VIII. Div. I.(2007)
Where,
t = minimum required thickness of shell, in mm.
P = internal design pressure in Kpa.
R = inside radius of the shell course under consideration, in mm.
S = maximum allowable stress value in Kpa
E = joint efficiency

Therefore minimum required thickness of shell, in mm t = 686.462 x 425 / ( 192217 x 0.85 + 0.4 x 686.462 )
t = 1.78 mm
Hence considering greater value of the minimum thickness of
cylindrical shell from 1) & 2).
The minimum thickness of shell without corrosion allowance, in
t = 3.59 mm
mm
Hence the minimum thickness of shell considering corrosion
t = 4.09 mm
allowance, in mm
However the provided thickness shell plate is t = 8 mm

As Per Clause UG – 32 (e), Page 29 of
B) Design of Shallow Head : ASME SEC VIII. DIV – 1(2007)
1 Shallow head Thickness
The required thickness of a Dish head for the case in which the
knuckle radius is 6% of the inside crown radius and the inside
crown radius equals the outside diameter of the skirt, shall be
determined by
The minimum required thickness of the head after forming in mm.
t = 0.885 x P x L / ( S x E - 0.1 x P)
Where,
t = minimum required thickness of the head after forming in mm.
P = internal design pressure in Kpa.
S = maximum allowable stress value in Kpa,
E = lowest efficiency of any joint in the head.
L = inside spherical or crown radius in mm. L = 777 mm

the required thickness of Dish head is t = 0.885 x 686.462 x 777 / ( 96108.5 x 1.00 - 0.1 x 686.462 )

Therefore the required thickness of Dish head, in mm t = 4.91506 mm

Hence the minimum thickness of Dish head considering

t = 5.42 mm
corrosion allowance, in mm

However provided thickness for Dish head plate is t = 12 mm
