OBJECTIVE: Understanding sound control as an important element in creating


comfortable functional spaces and necessity of manipulating acoustical
environment in buildings.
To foster knowledge in in basic illumination design & illumination system for
indoor and outdoor spaces.

OUTLINE: Part I:
Unit I: Sound -Frequency range of audible sound, Properties of Sound ,
Propagation of sound, Sound reflection, diffusion, diffraction. Sound
Isolation, Mass law, Transmission loss, STC rating, TL for single and
double walls sound leaks and flanking.
Reverberation time for speech and music.
Unit II: Acoustical defects, Acoustical requirement of various building
types. Acoustical materials ( sound absorbing and reflecting materials,
finishes and surfaces. Constructional and planning measures for good
acoustical design of buildings in general.
Understanding Auditorium design – Acoustical treatment of Auditorium /
Lecture Halls / Conference hall.
Unit III: Noise Control: Means and measures for control, noise insulation,
noise control requirements, constructional details and performance.
Environmental Noise Control

Part II:
Unit I: Illumination:
Light radiation, its units, Laws of illumination, inverse square law and
cosine law. Artificial light calculation by Lumen Method. Light sources,
various types of Lamps and their characteristics.
Unit II: Types of lighting systems, task lighting, accent lighting, general
lighting, lighting for mood etc. Luminaries, their types, properties and
uses.

METHOD: Mainly lecture based. Case Studies and project work on auditorium design.
Survey of various lighting fixtures.
