TOPIC:REGION V (BICOL REGION)

● The Bicol Region, officially designated as Region V, is an


administrative region in the Philippines grouped under the island
group of Luzon.

THE 6 PROVINCES OF REGION V

1.ALBAY

● Legazpi is the capital of the province of Albay and the center of the
Bicol government.
● Bikol,tagalog and english(Languages)
● Albay is a province of the Philippines located in the Bicol Region in
Southeastern Luzon Island.
● Albay is divided into 15 municipalities and 3 cities.
● Albay has a total area of ​2,552.6 (sq.kilometers).

HISTORY OF ALBAY
● April 3,1574-The province of albay was established,they called
“Ibalon”.
● 1569-Spaniards reached the Bicol Region and subsequently
founded the town of camalig.
● 1573-The town of Libon in the province of Albay was established by
Juan de Salcedo to the Bicol Region.
● February 1,1814- Eruption of Mayon Volcano burying the town of
cagsawa.
● May 14,1834-Jose Maria Penafrancia,a military engineer was made
“Corregidor” of the province.
● 1898-Albay was occupied by the Americans.
● April 26,1901-The Americans organized a civil provincial
government of Albay.

● MAYON VOLCANO-Mayon Volcano, active volcano, southeastern
Luzon, Philippines, dominating the city of Legaspi. Called the
world’s most perfect volcanic cone because of the symmetry of its
shape.
● CAGSAWA RUINS-The Cagsawa Ruins (also spelled as Kagsawa,
historically spelled as Cagsaua) are the remnants of a 16th-century
Franciscan church, the Cagsawa church.
● RAWIS BLACK BEACH-It is known for big waves and black sand
beach in Legazpi City. A boulevard has been constructed so people
can see a coastal view.
● SAN MIGUEl ISLAND-is an island in the province of Albay in the
Philippines located at the western end of the strip of islands in the
Lagonoy Gulf.

SOURCES OF INCOME IN ALBAY


● Agriculture is the main industry in Albay, producing crops
such as coconut, rice, sugar, and abaca.
● Handiwork is the main source of income in rural areas. It
continues to contribute a relatively large share to the
small-scale industries of the province.
● Forestry and paper making are another source of livelihood.
The production of abaca products such as abaca of Manila,
hats, bags, mats, and slippers is one of the main sources of
income in rural areas.
● Fishing is also a source of income on both coasts of the
province.

FESTIVAL IN ALBAY
● MAGAYON FESTIVAL- is a yearly celebration derived from the
legend of the Mayon Volcano to honor the province's bounty and
beauty.

● Daet is the capital of Camarines Norte.


● Camarines Norte is divided into 12 municipalities

● 1636-The province of Camarines Norte was created.
● 1829-Camaries provinces were split into Norte and Sur.
● 1854-1857-Both provinces emerged again (known as Ambos
Camarines).

● ST. PETER THE APOSTLE CHURCH-It is the oldest church in
Camarines Norte built by the Franciscan friars in 1611.
It is known for its pristine beaches—the most popular among these
is the Mahabang Buhangin beach, which is made up of a long
stretch of powdery white sand.
● CALAGUAS ISLAND-It is known for its pristine beaches—the most

● CORY AQUINO BOULEVARD-The Cory Aquino Boulevard, the
longest in the country, passes through the towns of Mercedes, Daet,

● Camarines Norte is an agricultural province. Coconut, rice, pili
nuts, and pineapple are the main products. The provincial
government promotes its pineapple as the sweetest in the world,
calling it the Queen pineapple. In coastal areas, people are mostly
engaged in fishing.

the province' primary agri-product, the sweetest “queen• pineapple

● BASILICA OF OUR LADY PENAFRANCIA-It is the only Basilica in
the Bicol Region and the whole Roman Catholic Archdiocese of
Caceres.

Caramoan Islands.

● Its economy is mostly based on agriculture. Of the 35 towns, 29
towns are primarily agricultural, producing rice, corn, feedmeal,
freshwater fish, livestock, coconut, sugar, abacá, and water-lily.

● KAOGMA FESTIVAL- The Kaogma Festival marks the foundation
day (May 27, 1569) of Camarines Sur in the Philippines.

4.CATANDUANES
● Virac is the capital of Catanduanes
● The province of Catanduanes is located in the southeastern
part of the island of Luzon in the Philippines.
● It has an area of ​1,492.16 square kilometers.
● It is divided into 11 municipalities.

BRIEF HISTORY OF CATANDUANES


● Catanduanes was founded on September 26,
1945.Catanduanes' ' comes from the words “tandu”, a
native beetle,a native species of tree, both of which
were found throughout the island. People often referred
to the island as “katanduan” or, meaning 'a place where
the tandu and the samdong tree thrive in abundance.'
The pronunciation of this word by Spanish-speaking
people led to the coining of the Hispanicized version,
Catanduanes.
● Jose C. Cua was the governor of Catanduanes.
● The province is usually the first place in the Philippines
to get battered by typhoons, and so the province is
nicknamed the “Land of the Howling Winds.”
● It is also known as “ The Happy Island”

● BINURONG POINT-Locals call the place “Binurong”
because they usually bring the fishes they caught to that
place and they “buro” (preserve food by salting; soak in
vinegar…) it there. By the way, “Binurong” is also a Bicol
word meaning “Healed”
● MUSEO DE CATANDUANES-is the very first museum
established by the tourism office of the province that
houses the island's historical and cultural heritage. This
attraction is located on the 2nd floor of the Old Capitol
Building in Barangay Sta. Elena, Virac
● BATO CHURCH-John the Baptist Church also known as
the “Bato Church” in the town of Bato, Province of
Catanduanes.

● Masbate City is the capital of Masbate.


● It has an area of 4,151.78 km2
● It is divided into 20 municipalities.

● Masbad or Masbat was the old name of Masbate.
● Antonio T. Kho is the governor of this province.
● The area of Masbate is located in the central archipelago of the

seagulls or the LAPAY, found abundant in Barangay Bantigue,
Masbate.

6.SORSOGON

● Sorsogon City is the capital of Sorsogon.


● Sorsogon is a province located in the Bicol Region.
● Jose Edwin B. Hamor is the governor of Sorsogon.
● It has an area of 2,141 km.
● It is divided into 14 municipalities.
BRIEF HISTORY OF SORSOGON
● The province of Sorsogon was founded on February 28, 1895.
● The name Sorsogon was originally spelled "Solsogon" in most old
Spanish maps. Solsogon is an old Bikol word, meaning, "to trace" (a
river going upstream). The root word "solsog" is Bicol for "going
against the current.

● The major industries of the province are farming, fishing, livestock
and poultry raising and copra-making. Cottage industries include

KASANGGAYAHAN FESTIVAL-The province-wide and weeks-long


celebration of the Kasanggayahan Festival is one of the most celebrated
festivities in Sorsogon since it is the commemoration and celebration of
the province's founding anniversary, with the central celebration held at
the capital city.
