9 TOOLS AND EQUIPMENTS

The following equipment should be used to perform the tests:

 Load cell or dynamometer to measure the applied force.

 At least 2 dial gauges to measure the displacements.

 Chain block or pneumatic system to apply the required load.

 Slings or chains to transmit the loads to the post.

 Excavator, truck or similar to use it as reaction system.

 Magnetic base.

 Metal plate to subject the magnetic base or the dial gauge.

 Load shackle to properly fix the load cell with the Slings and Chain block. The load shackle to
use must always be for larger load capacity than test request.

*Equipment must have a calibration certificate no longer than 1 year ago.

*Dynamometers or Load Cells must have a precision of at least 5kg.

10 General considerations
 There will be 3 type of tests (Compressive, Tensile, Lateral) performed during POT.
 All the tests will be performed on piles according to the Layout for PILE TEST
(MH-CE-PP-DW-001)
 Prior to start the test, all “Sample preparation steps” must be completed.
 Loads must be transmitted to the posts by a chain block or a pneumatic system.
 It is not allowed to apply the loads directly with the excavator or the reaction system.
 Experienced POT Implementation team of piling sub-con (self execution team) will perform
POT and report will be submitted by QC department.
 Test will be perfomed on 1 types of piles
1. Cast in Place Concrete Pile (CCP)

11 Cast in Place Concrete Pile (CCP)

In this section the piling will be performed by drilling the holes in ground as per design
recommendations and then pouring concrete for pile foundation. After concrete is dry the
tests can be performed according to the approved method.

12 WORK METHODOLOGY

12.1 TENSILE TEST

In order to perform the Tensile test technician will proceed according to this procedure. The load
has to be transmitted to the post using a chain block or a hydraulic jack.
Preparation of the test
 Posts shall incorporate an opening hole in the head, with the intention of inserting a chain. The
chain shall transfer the vertical uplift loads to the foundation. Optionally a plate clamp can be
use, if it is not possible to drill the post.
 Prior to start the test, the chains and chain block must be aligned properly with the center of the
profile in order to improve the load transmission.
 Once the chain block and the chains are aligned, the load cell must be connected, and chain has
to be slightly tense.
 Once the post have been installed, inclination in both axis of the profile must be measured. The
measure will be made at the top of the profile. Additionally, if the profile twist while ramming
has to be described in the field log.
 After this process, the dial gauge has to be installed at the post base in order to record the
displacements of the pile.
 Once the chain block and the chains are aligned, the load cell must be connected, and chain has
to be slightly tense.

Tensile Test

Recording during the loading stages

 At each load increment, once test load is achieved, should wait until the displacement is
stabilized. The maximum waiting time is 3 min. if the displacement is stabilized before the
suggested time, test can go to the next step without waiting for the 3 min.
 Displacement will by always in millimeters and should be registered with 2 decimals.
 If once the objective load is reached for each step, it starts decreasing progressively it should
not be increased again until next load step. This is because transmitted load is transforming into
displacement and decreases tension generated.
 Record test load if failure occurs at any point during testing. Failure is indicated by rapid
progressive settlement of the pile under a constant load.
 Recording during unloading stages.

14 / 20
METHOD STATEMENT FOR PULL OUT TESTS
Rev0

 During unloading stages, load value and displacement shall be recorded 1 immediately when
the load decrement has been reached.
 Once the pile is in the last load step a photographic register is recommended to be taken. The
register must contain following information:
 General vision of the test, from the base until the chain block.

12.2 LATERAL LOAD TEST

Lateral Load test shall be executed with a jack placed between a heavy element to use as reaction
(for instance, excavator) and the post to be tested. Optionally the load can be apply using a chain
block. The load has to be transmitted to the post using a chain block or a hydraulic jack.
Preparation of the test:
 Prior to start the test, the chains and chain block must be aligned properly with the center of the
profile in order to improve the load transmission.
 The alignment must be in plant and in profile. Because of that, the chain at 100% deign load
must be parallel to the soil surface. The height of applied load should always be similar or
equal to the reaction point.
 Once the alignment has been finished, the chain must be slightly tens prior to start the test.

 General vision of the test, from the base until the chain block from profile.
 If the displacement of the reaction (excavator) has been measured, it should be included also a
photo of the place where it has been measured

13 COMPRESSIVE TEST
Compression test shall be executed with a jack placed between a heavy element to use as reaction
(excavator, brick blocks…) and the post to be tested.
Preparation of the test
 Posts are driven into the soil at depth considered by the Designer and as showed on Section
“Loads” of this document. The part of the post with the open hole has always to be exposed.
 The test can be performed using a hydraulic jack or similar. If the jack can control the pressure
will not be necessary to use the load cell.
 The system must be built to register the load applied, so if the cell needs to be use it must be
between the post and the reaction.
 Once the hydraulic jack has been prepared and in contact with the reaction, the dial gauge
needs to be placed to register axial movements.

14 FINAL RESULTS
The following results must be included in final test report:
 Displacement of the post base (vertically and horizontal) with stabilized displacement at each
load step.
 Displacement at base of the reaction (excavator) for those lateral tests with loads larger than
35kN.
 Load applied at each load step.
 A graphic with the displacement vs the applied load

15 ACCEPTANCE AND REJECTION CRITERIA

Test would be considered as failed if the pile or the soil reach their elastic limit. This happens if at
least if one of the following things can be observed:
 When a rapid progressive movement of the pile in the direction of the applied load, without any
increment in pressure is being registered in the manometer.
 A physical failure of the tested pile.
 When the tests raise following values
Axial Tests: Deflection equal or more than 20 mm with a 100% load or 10mm of
remaining deformation when discharge load until 0% from the first load cycle.
Lateral Load Tests: Deflection equal or more than 25 mm with a 100% load or 10mm of
remaining deformation when discharge load until 0% from the first load cycle.
This value must be interpreted as a guide, and each test will be treated and analyzed carefully once
the POT have finished.
All load steps must be completed no matter acceptance or rejection criteria is reached unless soil or
pile failure.
