WEEK 1
Different cultures have different views on what is considered correct behavior, or have particular ways
of conducting social interactions, and also have their own religions. All of these are a part of a belief
system. Commonly, the term is associated with religion because religion is founded on belief. However,
it can be associated with any kind of belief an individual or a society holds. So, what is a belief system,
exactly? A belief system's definition is something that can vary depending on the field of research in
which it is being discussed. In general, however, belief system is a set of values, tenets, thoughts, ideas,
etc., that a person or a group of people believe. Belief systems are not solely tied to religion, as there
are other types such as political beliefs and personal beliefs.
There are several types of belief systems, such as personal and political. A religious belief system deals
with morality, the existence of a god or many gods, the afterlife, etc. Philosophical belief
systems discuss the human experience, such as the nature of knowledge and thought, what it means to
exist, and the definition of reality.
Religions are excellent examples of belief systems, as there are hundreds of them on the planet. Religion
serves to outline principles for followers to adhere to, like treating another as one would treat
themselves.
Spirituality- One’s integrative view of life; involves a quest for the meaning and ultimate value of life as
opposed to an instrumentalist or materialistic attitude to life.
b. Theology - as a study of God’s way to humans and philosophy as a reflection of humans’ lived
experience of God
- theology is the rational analysis of religious belief.
- Theology is the study of religion. It examines what faith means to different people and cultures.
Theologians think about and debate the nature of God, including the questions about the meaning of
religion. More importantly theology is the study of God's nature and the belief in religion.
c. Philosophy of Religion - Philosophy of Religion is rational thought about religious issues and concerns
without a presumption of the existence of a deity or reliance on acts of faith. Philosophers examine the
nature of religion and religious beliefs.
