MODULE 1: THE CONCEPTS OF TEACHING AND THE


ELEMENTS OF THE EDUCATIVE PROCESS

Overview
This lesson will provide you significant concepts about teaching that will inspire you more to make it as
your lifetime commitment.

At the end of this module, you should be able to:


 analyze the concepts of teaching as a ministry, profession, science and vocation;
 summarize how the teacher’s attributes and the learner’s differences contribute to the total
effectiveness of the learning environment.

LESSON 1: CONCEPTS OF TEACHING


Teaching as a Ministry

- Teaching is one of the most meaningful ministries in life. It is extending your service to your students in
order to help them succeed in life. It goes beyond self.
- Every teacher must make “The measure of one’s love is to love without measure” his/ her motto. It
means “the measure of one’s unconditional teaching is to teach without counting the cost!”

Teaching as a Profession

- Teaching has become equal to any other profession by the virtue of Presidential Decree 1006 which
became effective last January 16, 1977. This is a decree which professionalizes teaching in our country
promulgating the crucial and relevant role of teachers in shaping the future of a nation through
education. This decree boosted the morale of teachers through provision of incentives and motivation
because like all other professions, teaching requires a specific number of years of higher education
studies.
- Alongside with the aforementioned decree is the Philippine Teachers Professionalization Act of
1994 (Republic Act 7836) which strengthens the regulation and supervision of the practice of teaching
in the Philippines and thus prescribes a licensure examination for teachers.
- Other reasons why teaching is a profession:
 has its own body of specialized knowledge;
 upholds service over and above personal and monetary profit;
 establishes its own policies and standards for professional exercise ;
 has its own unique professional organization.

- For professional competency, it requires continuous professional growth.

Teaching as a Science
- Teaching is a Science because it is subjected to :

 an organized and objective planning;


 a preparation and execution of the lessons in order to direct learners to learning;
 commitment to an unbiased analysis, problem- solving and modification of the outcomes of
learning.
- As a science, it is inspiring and refreshing craft to the teachers for the laboratory is the classroom itself
where meaningful and relevant interaction takes place.
- In addition, the community of learners, with the guidance and motivation of the teacher, is in constant
search and enrichment of their learning inputs and outputs.

Teaching as a Vocation
- A teacher is committed to endure in the teaching profession against all odds.

WARNING!!!
Do not look at teaching as a mere job.

LESSON 2: ELEMENTS OF THE EDUCATIVE PROCESS

The Teacher
- The school may have all the best facilities and resources, but without good teachers, it may not possibly
sustain itself.
- Good schools, heavily depend on conscientious and committed teachers more than anyone or anything
else.
- For quality education to carry out its mission, needs good teachers to guide students.
- “A good teacher must use his/her common sense in every situation he/she is confronted with
complemented by a balance temper, understanding, sharing and developing of essential moral values
among the students (Samuel Reed Hall).
- Teachers must know how to use their mental faculties to the fullest. Good teachers really have to use
their heads if only to survive in this complicated world of ours.
- A model teacher is exemplified by the acronym TEACH
 T- for treasure
 E- empathize
 A- accentuate
 C- care and credible
 H- help

TREASURE
Despite the students’ misbehavior and negative attitudes which may sometimes run us
counter to a teacher’s expectations, the students must still be valued as individuals of unique
behaviour and differences as every learner matters. An unknown author once said, “a learner is
worth the universe!” We know of teachers who teach conscientiously beyond their official time
without counting the cost. They give 100% of their time and attention to their students.

EMPATHIZE
Teachers often need to be extra sensitive to what is happening to their students. This is not
an easy thing to do. Teachers who went to the extent of dipping their hands into the private life of
their students just to relate with them can expect some discomfort and anxiety. There may be a
latent resentment on the parents’ part especially when teachers’ go on home visitation. But this
should be ignored. If at times the students did fail in a particular test or went to the extreme of
cheating in order to pass, empathize or put yourself in their shoes so you will not condemn them at
once, but instead understand them. Find out the rationale behind their misbehavior. The heart of
education is education with a heart!

ACCENTUATE
Why not try to see the best in your students in order to win their hearts? It is easier to
challenge them to aim for higher marks and exemplary performance if the students know that you
are supporting them. Sarcasm drives away students to go beyond their limits. You will reap the
impact of sowing positive remarks to your students when you see the transformation of every quiet
and shy student to an active and cooperative student.

CARE AND CREDIBILITY


“Cura” is the Latin version of care. The Jesuit rule for a good teacher, which is “cura
personalis” evokes wisdom and challenge for every teacher to personally care for their students. If
education is bordering merely on the mastery of the subject matter without the genuine concern for
the students, they may become as “mechanical beings sans humane behavior.”
Credibility and trust are the essential elements in winning the heart of pupils that frame the
teachers’ mission. So basic are these elements that losing them is tantamount to the loss of the
students’ belief in their teacher.
Once the credibility of a teacher is tarnished, it will be very difficult for him/her to discipline
the students. Hence, every teacher should be on guard to keep his/her credibility intact. It must be
handled with care and honesty, since destroying it will have the potential to create negative ripple
effect for his/her students.

HELP
Have you in one way or another been involved in helping others in any way that you can?
The feeling is indescribable, isn’t it? More so with a student whom you have assisted to come out of
his/her “shell” in order to be counted in class! Nowadays, because of the emergence of science and
technology, interacting with timid and unassuming students is often neglected by teachers. Much as
they want to help students, they often fail to do so because of the demands of their classroom work.

THE LEARNER
- Teachers who are committed to respect the diversity of learners need to be aware of how they perform
in order to achieve the holistic development of the students.

- A teacher could not just regard the differences; indeed, a highly effective teacher would try his/her best
to increase the disparity of similarities and differences which is a powerful tool to promote cultural
tolerance and unity in diversity.

THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

- Every teacher is challenged to make his/her classroom a place for effective teaching and learning. In
the course of your teaching, you will open your eyes to the reality of a conducive learning environment
where you and your students interact and will help generate better productivity for them.

Believing that a school should never isolate itself from the community, once again the PPST (NCBTS) further
reiterated the role of community linkage in helping the teacher create a meaningful engagement in any learning
environment.
