Introduction & How to Use this Workbook

This collection of preparation material was created due to the fact that there was very limited
material on the Duolingo English Test. The lessons in this book were created to be used with
the guidance of an instructor or as self-study in preparation for the exam.

The material in this book was sourced from a number of reputable sources. The list of sources is
at the end of the book. The questions were adapted from both IELTS and Cambridge
Assessment exams so that they were comparable to the types of questions found on the
Duolingo practice tests and the real exam. All material in this preparation class was created for
a student whose level is that of a B2 or an IELTS score of 6. The vocabulary is taken from a B2
academic word list.

Layout
The workbook is divided into six lessons meant to be covered over a six-day period. Each day is
designed to cover two types of exam questions. Those two sections are then broken down into
a combination of training, training practice and practice. Throughout the workbook you will find
the following boxes and sections:

Teacher Led Class:

If you are using this in a class with a teacher, the teacher will work through the workbook with
you. The teacher will guide you through the lessons and work at a pace that is comfortable for
the class.

Self-Study:
If you are using this as a self-study student, then you are free to work at your own pace. Make
sure that you find other resources either from a book or the internet that can help you. Use the
suggested websites found within the pages of the workbook or the ones listed in the resource
page.

This workbook was designed to help students with different sections of the exam. In addition, it
is recommended that you use the free practice tests on the Duolingo site. At the end they give
you an estimated range of what your score may be.

Missing Letters/C-Test Question

Question Description
Time to Answer: 3 minutes

How it works: For this question, you will see a short excerpt. The excerpt’s first
sentence is complete but thereafter, you will see words with missing
letters. Your task will be to fill in the missing letters that makes sense.
What is it testing: English syntax through vocabulary spelling recognition

How to prepare: Read non-fiction texts and advanced English articles. This type of
question tends to include historical texts and the language tends to be
more academic in nature. As such, it can be more difficult for a non-
native English speaker because of the complex vocabulary presented and
because you are asked to recognize it all based from context.

Strategies
-use the words that are surround the ‘damaged words’ to help predict what the ‘damaged words’
may be.
-read the entire sentence or text. There may be words that are in the text that are ‘damaged
words.’
-grammar rules help as well. Plurals and singulars, and verb tenses are good clues to the answers.
-watch for where words usually appear in a sentence. Pay attention to subjects, objects, verbs,
adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, etc.

Context is a big part of this section. What is context?

-the circumstances that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea, and in terms
of which it can be fully understood and assessed.
-the parts of something written or spoken that immediately precede and follow a word
or passage and clarify its meaning.

One way to figure out context is by looking at the words around the blank and deciding what
type of word you need.

A. Brainstorm some possible words for each blank. Think about the following:
a) grammar rules
b) noun- plural or singular
c) verbs- what tense should it be
d) adjectives- is the missing word describing a noun
e) adverb- is it telling how the verb was done or describing an adjective or adverb
f) it is a preposition, a conjunction/linking word, an auxiliary verb, quantifier, etc

Another way to figure out context is using your own vocabulary knowledge.

C. Before deciding what the word is, discuss the following:

a) what words do you know that start with the given letters
b) what is the context? Do the words you know fit the context?

1. The homing instinct is what makes certain animals, birds and fish, return to the place they

know. Word families are connected to the four main parts of speech; NOUNS, VERBS,
ADJECTIVES, & ADVERBS. The root word is usually the verb and sometimes the noun. The other
members of the word family are built from the root by using suffixes (found at the end of
words) and prefixes (found at the beginning of words).

PART 1- Linking Words, Relative Clauses & Adjectives

A. Linking Words or Conjunctions

One of the keys to a more complex sentence is understanding how linking words or
conjunctions work. There are quite a few and they fall into different categories based on their
function in the sentence.

One thing to pay close attention to is the punctuation and sentence structure of each linking
word and phrase.

Group 1 – Contrasting

Words like however, despite and although all show that what is coming next is going to contrast
the previous statement. These are broken up into two different sub-groups that again have
different functions.

Sub-Group A- Direct Contrast Sub-Group B- Unexpected Contrast

however, while, whereas, but, unlike although, even though, despite, in spite of,
nevertheless, nonetheless, however
These words show that there is a direct contrast These words show that there is a contrast to what is
between the ideas in the sentence. being said, but it is something unexpected.
The ideas are somewhat opposite each other
Examples: Examples:
I am poor while my brother is rich. Although it was raining outside, we went swimming.
Unlike my brother, I am not rich. We went swimming even though it was raining outside.
Whereas my brother is rich, I am poor. Despite the rain outside, we went swimming.
My brother is rich. However, I am poor. We went swimming in spite of the rain outside.
It was raining. Nevertheless, we went swimming.
It was raining. Nonetheless, we went swimming.
It was raining. However, we went swimming.

Group 2- Adding Information

and in addition (to) as well as also too furthermore moreover

apart from besides not only…. but also in addition to this

Examples:
We discussed training, education, and the budget.
We are concerned not only by the costs, but also by the competition.
As well as the costs, we are concerned by the competition.
They were concerned, too. OR I, too, was concerned.
Apart from Rover, we are the largest sports car manufacturer.

Content created by Student Pathways. Copyright of Student Pathway Inc. Sources are listed on last page.
18
DUOLINGO ENGLISH TEST PREPARATION CLASS

Besides Rover, we are the largest sports car manufacturer.

Marketing plans give us an idea of he potential market. Moreover/Furthermore, they tell us
about the competition.

Group 3- Giving Reason

Due to (the fact that) owing to (the fact that) because because of since as

Due to and Owing to

-these must be followed by a noun
Due to the rise in oil prices, the inflation rates rose by 1.25%.
Owing to the demand, we are unable to supply all items within 2 weeks.
The inflation rates rose by 1.25% due to the fact that oil prices rose.

Because and Because of

-they have the same meaning except that because of is followed by a noun
We believe in incentive schemes because we want our employees to improve.
Because we want our employees to improve, we believe in incentive schemes.
I didn't go to the soccer game because of the bad weather.
I didn’t go to the soccer game because there was bad weather.

Since and as
-since and as mean because
We believe in incentive schemes, since/as we want our employees to improve.
Since/as we want our employees to improve, we believe in incentive schemes.

Group 4- Giving a result

Therefore so consequently this means that as a result

Therefore, so, consequently and as a result are all used in a similar way.

Examples:
The company is expanding. Therefore/ So/ Consequently/ As a result, they are taking on
extra staff.

So can be used in the same sentences as because but the meaning and structure changes.
I had to take a taxi to work today because the train drivers were on strike.
The train drivers were on strike, so I had to take a taxi to work today.

** So is being used as a conjunction not an adverbial, therefore the comma comes before so.
So usually is in the middle of the sentence.
Example:
I start a new job on Monday, so I have to cancel my plans for lunch.

Content created by Student Pathways. Copyright of Student Pathway Inc. Sources are listed on last page.
19
DUOLINGO ENGLISH TEST PREPARATION CLASS

I start a new job on Monday. Consequently, I have to cancel my plans for lunch.
In this example, consequently is an adverbial and that means the comma comes after.

B. Relative Clauses

Relative, or Adjective Clauses are an excellent way of adding more information about the
image. It helps combine two ideas into one sentence showing that you have a more complex
understanding of English grammar and sentence structures.

There are two types of Relative Clauses:

-defining relative clauses
-non-defining relative clauses

Both types of relative clauses use Relative Pronouns when writing them.

Relative Pronouns:
WHO -used for people
WHOM – used for people
WHOSE – used for possession of people and things
WHICH – used for things
THAT- used for things and people in general (staff, students, police, etc.)
WHEN – used for time
WHERE – used for places

Defining relative clauses- these are used to add more information to a noun so as to clarify
what you are referring to.

Example:
I saw a man on my way to work today.
- there are many men in the world. How does the listener know which one you
are talking about? And, why should the listener care about this man?

BUT IF YOU SAID… Underlined phrase is

the relative clause
I saw a man who was wearing a penguin costume on my way to work today.
-the listener is more interested in what you have to say.

You could say…

I saw a man on my way to work today. He was wearing a penguin costume.

-the listener would still be more interested but since the object in the first
sentence is the same as the subject in your second, you could combine them together.

Non-defining relative clause: these are used to add information to a noun, as well.

Content created by Student Pathways. Copyright of Student Pathway Inc. Sources are listed on last page.
20
DUOLINGO ENGLISH TEST PREPARATION CLASS

The difference is that the information you are adding is not necessary to the main idea of the
initial sentence. And there is the use of commas around the relative clause.

Example:
I went to New York last week with my family. New York is known as the Big Apple.
There is nothing wrong with writing these two sentences like this. However, they
could be written like this because again the object of the first sentence is the same
as the subject of the second one.
Underlined phrase is
Therefore, you could write it like this…. the relative clause

I went to New York, which is known as the Big Apple, last week with my family.

Notice the commas and that the information between them (the relative clause) is not
necessary to the idea that the speaker went to New York with their family.

C. Adjectives
We have already looked at what adjectives are earlier in the lessons. In this section we will
expand on using them and some things to remember.

Adjectives ending in -ing and -ed

We use the -ing ending to describe things
Example: This movie is exciting.
We use the -ed ending to describe our feelings toward something.
Example: I am excited to watch this movie.

Adjective Position

Adjectives in English usually go in front of the word they describe.

We visited an old house. We saw some beautiful paintings and some elegant furniture.

Adjectives can also follow verbs such as be, get, become, look, seem, appear, sound, taste,
smell, and feel.
Everything seemed pleasant when we started. The flowers smelt beautiful and the gardens
looked wonderful. But the weather got very hot and we all felt exhausted by the end.

There are some nouns in English which are used as adjectives:

a diamond ring a library book a seaside hotel folk music strawberry jam

Adjective Order

When we use more than one adjective, we usually put them in a certain order. We say:
A strange old wooden chair NOT a wooden old strange chair

Content created by Student Pathways. Copyright of Student Pathway Inc. Sources are listed on last page.
21
DUOLINGO ENGLISH TEST PREPARATION CLASS

One way to remember the order is with the word OSASCOMP

OSASCOMP = opinion, size, age, shape, colour, origin, material, purpose

Opinion Size Age Shape Colour Origin Material Purpose Noun

The beautiful old Chinese vase.
A small square silk scarf.
An ugly green desk lamp

** the general rule is to use no more than three adjectives at once.

Part 2: Simple Sentences into Complex Sentence Practice.

A. Look at the simple sentences below. How can you make them more complex or advanced?
Write your new sentence with adjectives, relative clauses or connecting words.

1. The boy is riding a bicycle.

___________________________________________________________________________

2. The cat is in the garden.

3. The children are on the swings.

Part 4: Sentence Stems

Sentence stems are parts of sentences that can be used to help write sentences.
By having some memorized, you can create more complex and advanced
sentences that flow and help you sound more fluent and natural.

It is a good idea to have more than version of a sentence stem so your answers
don’t sound memorized or practiced. This will come off as unnatural .

1. What is another way to say these sentence stems?

A) This picture shows….

B) Moreover…

C) appears

D) can be seen in the background

E) the photo has been taken

2. Look at the picture below. Beside it there is an almost complete spoken answer. Put in the
missing sentence stems. There may be more than one possible answer.
1
________________________a group of female middle-aged
runners striving to reach the end of the line to win the
race.2_____________, it seems that 3_________________

runner’s sportswear identify the countries they come from.
4

ELICITED IMITATION (Read-out loud)

Question Description
Time to Answer: 20 seconds

How it works: For this type of question, you will see a statement in quotes with a
“Record Now” button at the bottom of the screen. You will have 20
seconds to read the statement, click “Record” and speak the written
sentence out loud.
What is it testing: English reading, speaking, pronunciation skills, and word stress.
How to prepare: Practice reading in English out loud. You can even record yourself to be
able to listen and assess any pronunciation mistakes afterwards.

Part 1: Practice
A. Let’s practice.
1. Nowadays we are producing more and more rubbish. Why do you think this is happening?
2. These days more fathers stay at home and take care of their children while mothers go out to
work.
3. Mathematical and computer models are produced and field research is done to test the models.

4. Some parents buy their children a large number of toys to play with.

5.To climb the career ladder, one needs to keep up with new technologies and focus on
professional development.

6. Scientists are an interesting breed of people; they are creative, adventurers, critical, and
pragmatic.

7. It is strange that only extraordinary men make the discoveries, which later appear so easy and
simple.
8. Measuring programming progress by lines of cod is like measuring aircraft building progress by
weight.

WRITING: 50 words
Question Description
Time to Answer: 5 minutes

How it works: You will be asked to write 50-100 words to a given prompt within the
time allotted. The difficulty of the prompt will be consistent with your
performance in the entirety of your responses up until this question.
What is it testing: Vocabulary knowledge, reading and writing skills.
How to prepare: Practice free-writing for periods of 5 minutes. This isn’t a lot of time to
come up with a cohesive response, write it down, and check your
spelling and grammar -and doing so will only get easier with practice.

Strategies:
-it sounds simple but make sure your answer includes the idea or question they are asking you.
-you have to write 50 words or more. If you can’t, then you have to wait till time is up to move onto the
next question.
-start with an introduction sentence
-use a personal experience or one somebody you know has had
-use examples of your points
-use the idea of “I am of two minds”, meaning you see both sides and argue both sides. But remember to
decide which one you lean towards more.

Part 1: Expressing an Argument

The following are things you can do help you write a good 50 word answer.

1. By adding a personal view to the answer as your introduction sentence shows that you
understand the question and are able to relate and give an answer that is relevant. It also
distances yourself from making a bold or blanketed statement that might be hard to prove.

Content created by Student Pathways. Copyright of Student Pathway Inc. Sources are listed on last page.
32
DUOLINGO ENGLISH TEST PREPARATION CLASS

2. What would you want to hear as answer? This will help you come up with ideas to write
about.

3. Change of perspective can help develop good writing. Look at the topic from another angle
that is not yours. This will help create ideas and opinions that you may not have thought about
before.

4. The magic of three! Three seems to be the ideal number of points, examples, or arguments
for a basic answer. Having three supporting ideas for your opinion will help create a good
argument for what you are writing about.

Part 2: Brainstorming
1. Let’s look at the question below and do some practice using the four suggestions from
above.

“Many students choose to take a gap year before starting university, to travel or gain work
experience. Do you think this a good idea or a waste of time?”

A. Personal View or Introduction Sentence

B. What do you want to hear about?

C. What other perspective could you take in regard to this question?

D. What three things could you say about this quote that are from your own experiences,
opinions or beliefs?

E. Using the ideas from A-D, respond to the quote in 50 words or less.

Part 3: Exam Practice

A. Here are a few practice questions to practice with.

1. Today’s younger generation is more attracted by flexible working hours.

2. Before I travel to a new country, I always take the time to find out about the local customs.

3. “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.”

4. “Reading is to the mind, what exercise is to the body.”

5. It is not necessary for children to learn about ancient history.

SPEAKING: Speak About a Topic

Question Description
Time to Answer: 30 seconds to plan; 90 seconds to respond

How it works: You will receive a written prompt and four open-response questions to
guide your response.
What is it testing: It is meant to provide admission officers an opportunity to see you
spontaneously speaking in English as you respond to the prompt.
How to prepare: Practice speaking for one minute and a half and recording yourself so
you know what long a minute and half feels like. Also, so that you can
listen to your pronunciation and identify areas of improvement.
Pro Tip: Actually USE your planning period -you don’t lose anything by taking up
that time. Take your time when you are actually speaking, and avoid
using fillers like “um”, “like”, and “you know.”

34
DUOLINGO ENGLISH TEST PREPARATION CLASS

Strategies:
-the most important thing do to in this section is to answer ALL the prompts they give you.
-use more complex sentences
-expand your answers with examples, personal experience or things you have read heard about on
the topic.
-be aware of the time. You only have 90 seconds.
-speak clearly
-you don’t have time to plan what you are going to say, so answer the prompts in the order they are
given.
-try to repeat the prompt in your answer.

Part 1: Analyzing the Question

A. Brainstorming and Planning

Even though there is no time to brainstorm and write down ideas, we are going to do that
before we get into answering the questions as you would on the exam.

1. Use the sample question above and discuss the questions.

Talk about a hobby or activity
that you enjoy.
* What is it?
* How long have you been doing
it?
* Who do you do it with?
* Why is it important to you?

a. What kind of answers is the exam looking for in regards to this question?

b. Which prompts in the question should you expand on more than the others?

c. What tone are you going to take? (formal vs informal vs neutral)

d. How interesting does your answer have to be?

e. What happens if you don’t have a hobby or activity you enjoy doing or you can’t think of
anything to say?

35
DUOLINGO ENGLISH TEST PREPARATION CLASS

B. . Let’s look at the question from above. Below there are simple answers to the prompts
that are bad answers for more advanced speakers. How would you expand on these answers?

Reminder: Try to restate the prompt in your answer.

Talk about a hobby or activity that you enjoy.
Example: What is it? A hobby or activity that I enjoy doing is bowling
at the local bowling alley in my city. I prefer 5 pin
over the Canadian version of 10 pin bowling.

1. What is it?
I go bowling.
2. How long have you been doing it?
For about 5 years.
3. Who do you do it with?
My co-workers.
4. Why is it important to you?
I get to relieve stress from my job.

PART 2: Controlled Practice

Again, let’s do some planning before you speak.

A. Here is a speaking prompt. Take a moment to plan in your head what you are going to say.

What is a TV show that you watch?

* What is it called?
* What is it about?
* How long have you been watching it?
* Why do enjoy watching it?

1. Answer the prompts in simple answers. Use the information from question 1 to answer the
question. Don’t worry about timing right now. Just speak.

Part 3: Practice
Your teacher will show you some questions with their prompts. Answer them the best you can
in 30 seconds using the techniques practiced in this lesson. (PowerPoint 3)

SPEAKING: Audio Prompt

PART 1: TRAINING
This section is quite challenging not in answering the questions but in preparing to answer.
People have asked the following questions:

“What if I don’t understand the question?”

The solution: pay attention to the key words and base your answer off of them.
“What if I don’t catch all of the key words?”
The solution: Talk about the ones you did catch and stay on topic as long as you can.
“What if I don’t know what a word means?”
The solution: use the context of the sentence and the key words to guess the meaning.
“Can I write down the question?”
The solution: Definitely not! You will be disqualified as that is considered cheating.
“Can I say anything I want if I run out of things to say?”
The solution: No, stay on topic. If you run out of things to say, better to stop the
recording. You lose points for going off topic.

Watch this Youtube video about this section of the exam. The presenter gives some great
advice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrkTfNEudZ8

A. Look at the questions below. Don’t answer them but instead underline the key words then
discuss what you would talk about for each question.

1. What makes middle-aged people shift their careers? Is this a good decision or a bad one?

2. What percentage should the public be responsible for the environment? Who is responsible
for the other part?

3. The care of the elderly has changed over the years. How did this happen and what are the
effects on their families?

4. Why is telling stories important in a culture? How can this tradition be upheld?

5. Describe someone who is brave. What makes him or her courageous?

B. Your teacher will play you some questions. Fill in the chart below.

Key words Full Question

1

C. How do I start my answer?

The best way to start your answer is to have a brief topic sentence. You can do this by restating
the question or include your own ideas. Adding your own ideas is always the best.

With a partner, choose two of the five questions above and come up with some possible topic
sentences.

PART 2: PRACTICE
Now answer one or two the above questions using the points you discussed earlier with a
partner.

A good way to practice is to watch a Talk Show like Ellen, Kelly Clarkson, Drew Barrymore, or
Oprah for example, there are many more out there. These people do a lot of interviews in
their shows. Listen to their questions and see if you can catch the key words. You can even try
to answer them about yourself. Good practice when you become famous!!!!
