BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Our skin naturally exfoliates by shedding dead skin cells, revealing
new skin through a 30-day cycle. While it does a great job on its own, there
are times it does need some help. Depending on your skin type or even as
we grow older, our skin’s natural cycle of shedding these dead skin cells
have changed. A body scrub is a skin care service whose primary function
is to remove dead skin cells through exfoliation as well as to cleanse the
skin and to increase the body's blood circulation. The exfoliating
component needs to be abrasive enough to achieve this but not too strong
so as not to damage the skin. Just like any other services that a salon or
spa has been providing, we must first prepare the client prior to a body
scrub service. Checking the client’s skin and body’s condition is important
to avoid hurting them or spreading a virus. The effectiveness of the body
scrub depends on how we handle the human body with care and attention.

BODY SCRUB AND ITS BENEFITS

KEY TERMS

• Exfoliates - wash or rub a part of the body with a granular

substance to remove dead cells from the surface of the skin
• Grime - pertains to the dirt on the surface of the skin
• Moisturize – to get rid of dryness

5
BODY SCRUB
A body scrub is a polish treatment which exfoliates the skin on
your body leaving it feeling fresh, smooth, moisturized and soft. A body
scrub is done with an abrasive material like salt, sugar, coffee grounds, or
rice bran, which is usually mixed with some kind of massage oil and an
aromatic like essential oils. Normally, the body replaces its skin cells every 28
days or so. Helping it rid of these grime and dead cells makes for a healthier
skin.
A body scrub is generally used in a complete spa treatment, which
involves the use of an exfoliating scrub and is followed by a hydrating body
wrap to nourish the skin and keep it fresh and supple. In case you are not
going for the beauty treatment at a spa, you can use a scrub while having
your bath and exfoliate your skin.

BENEFITS OF BODY SCRUB

There are a good number of benefits for getting a regular body scrub.
Here are some of them:
1. Exfoliates the skin
A body scrub gets rid of those unwanted dead skin cells which cause
flaky skin, leaving you with brand new skin.

2. Moisturizes and soothes the skin

Through the removal of dead skin cells as a result of exfoliation
with a mild body scrub extend to moisturizing as it allows for the easy
absorption of a skin moisturizer into the healthy skin. Ideally, the best
body scrub is one that not only acts as a gentle exfoliant but moisturizes
at the same time.

3. Invigorates the skin

Exfoliating dead skin cells tends to remove the dull and lackluster
appearance of the skin. Using a body scrub regularly will help make
your skin look more vibrant and youthful.

4. Improves blood circulation

Scrubs tend to be very rejuvenating to the body as well. All that
rubbing helps promote circulation which brings blood to the skin.

5. Improves skin tone.

It revitalizes the skin by exposing the smoother new layer after
the dead cells had been removed. If your skin had become rough and
has darkened due to pollution or exposure to dust, you can use a scrub
to remove the rough skin layer leaving you with a soft and supple skin.

6
6. Open skin pores in preparation for another skin treatment
A good body scrub or polish forms the basis of other body
treatments. It opens the pores and wakens the skin before a wrap or
mud treatment, the oils used can relax or stimulate your senses ready
for any similarly focused treatment that you might be having
afterwards.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER IN ASSESSING THE CLIENT

PRIOR TO BODY SCRUB

KEY TERMS

• Allergy - the hypersensitivity of a person to a specific

substance such as food, pollen, and dust which in similar
amounts is harmless to most people.
• Skin/Body Condition - A state, mode, or state of being ; the
physical status of the skin/body as a whole or of one of its
parts.
• Nape – back of the neck

8
PREPARING THE PATRON FOR A BODY SCRUB
Before carrying out a body scrub, the patron’s skin condition and body
condition must be checked and analyzed to assess whether the patron is
suited to the treatment or not. If the patron has some allergies, precautionary
measures should be considered.

A. SKIN CONDITION
The purpose of analyzing the skin condition is to determine the skin
type and the needed treatment for the patron. In some instances, you will be
able to readily identify skin characteristics. In doing the skin analysis, you
will note that different areas of the body may have different skin conditions
for this reason, it is necessary to evaluate each skin condition separately.

1. SKIN TYPE
• Normal skin - Evenly moist, smooth, and supple, with complexion free
of blemishes.
• Oily skin - obvious oily skin is sometimes inflamed and often
blemished.
• Dry Skin - Lacking moisture, skin is tough, rough, chapped & flaky
• Sensitive Skin - prone to itching and irritation experienced as a
subjective sensation when using cosmetics and toiletries

Skin Patch Test

If a patron has a sensitive or allergic skin, it is always recommended to
do a patch test. Skin patch test is a method the of testing a product on the
skin. It is very important because they help in avoiding possible adverse
reactions to new ingredients or products.

How to do a Skin Patch Test

The following are easy steps on how to do your own patch test:
• Use the inside of the wrist or the inside of the elbow as a starting point.
It is thinner than the rest of the body skin. The side of the neck is
another good option to check for compatibility.
• Be sure the area of skin on which you will be performing the test is
washed, dry and clean.
• Apply a small amount of the product to one of these areas.
• Cover the area with a bandage.
• If you feel any irritation or reaction, remove the bandage immediately
and wash area with soap and water.
• If a reaction, such as slight pink appears but subsides within 10-15
minutes, don't worry about it. Certain ingredients may give a
temporary reaction.
• If you don't see or feel any reaction, the preparation is probably safe to
use.

9
2. SKIN TEXTURE – the quality of the skin surface
• Soft skin- smooth
• Rough skin- coarse, uneven
• Tough skin- hard
• Chapped & flaky skin- dry, peeling

3. SKIN ELASTICITY – the degree that the skin can recover its shape after
pressure or tension is eliminated.

B. BODY CONDITION
Scrubs and body polishes are suitable and safe for just about everyone
BUT some conditions make some kinds of scrub/product bad for the patron.
As with all spa treatments, make sure the patron are clear about any medical
condition they have, or treatment they are receiving to be certain that the
service is safe and appropriate for them.

1. NORMAL – the body temperature, pulse rate and other structure are all
normal

Body Temperature – is the degree of hotness or coldness of the body and can
be checked by using a thermometer. Normal body temperature is 35°C to
37.4°C. Beyond that a mild fever is taking place. A temperature of 39°C is a
sign of high fever and is dangerous.

Pulse Rate – refers to the wave created by the heart when pumping blood into
the circulation. Normal pulse rate varies from person to person, but a normal
range for adults is 60 to 100 beats per minute (bpm).

Tip: When taking the pulse rate, do not use the thumb because it has
its own pulse and it might cause confusion.

10
2. LOW AND HIGH BLOOD
PRESSURE
Blood Pressure is a
measure of the force that your
heart uses to pump blood
around your body. The first
force (systolic pressure) occurs
as blood
pumps out of the heart and into
the arteries that are part of the
circulatory system. The second
force (diastolic pressure) is
created as the heart rests
between heart beats.

Blood Pressure Categories

4. SKIN RASHES - A rash is defined as a widespread eruption of skin lesions.

It can be local to just one small part of the body, or it can cover a large area.
Rashes come in many forms. They can be dry, moist, bumpy, smooth,
cracked, or blistered; they can be painful, itch, and even change color.

C. CRITICAL BODY POINTS

Critical body points are either parts of the body that should not be given
a scrub or part of the body that we can perform scrub but should be given
extra care because too much pressure on these parts may cause damage and
is dangerous.
