2.4 The Challenges I Faced While Performing Tasks

Every activity has got its own problems while striving to achieve the works at hand.
In a construction industry there are many problems that arise while performing the
tasks and needs a solution in order to proceed in executing. During the course of the
four-month internship program at the company, it is expected that I faced some sort
of difficulties. Indeed, I were challenged to some extent. These challenges were not
due to lack of initiation towards performing the task I were given instead it was
simply a matter of experience in the field. And that was something that could be
solved by continually engaging one’s self to the activities in the course of time of the
challenges that I faced, some of them that worth mentioning are:-

• Weather condition

• Transportation

CHAPTER THREE

3.1 Over all benefit gained from internship

An internship was beneficial in terms of interpreting theoretical knowledge’s to

practical and actual skill.

FINAL INTERNSHIP REPORT BY KEBEDE CHALLA @ RVU LABU LAFTO CAMPUSE 2023 Page-12
I have been performing my work tasks well. At each section of work tasks, I have
tried to do my work effectively and efficiently. All peoples in the sector were
appreciating my activities. I were practicing to fulfil all the work tasks in collaboration
with the help and advice of my supervisor. As much as possible I have tried best to
handle the activities assigned to me responsibly.

❖ I tried to accomplish my task as soon as possible

❖ Go and check other construction site to learn new things
Especially, I focused on the accuracy of works and in finding them quickly. Polite
way of treating everybody in the site as well as in the office is crucial thing in order to
have a good link of work with all stake holders of the company. Because of this I
make a smooth relationship with all of our staff members to avoid interruption of work
flow.

3.1. In terms of improving practical skill

The main goal of the internship program is to allow students to incorporate skill and
knowledge on the lessons learned in the classroom into a real-world experience.
Two words that describe person’s competencies are knowledge and skill. Knowledge
refers to the learning concept, principles and information regarding a particular
subject. Skill refers to the ability of using that information and applying it in context.
Practical skill is important that in workplace, what matters is not the amount of
practical experience or theoretical background that an individual has. What matters
is how much an individual is able to deal to effectively with the realities around him.
Through this internship program, I try to develop this theoretical skill into practical
skill. Practical skill I have gained from the program:

• Familiar with the procedures of every work tasks

• Management of resources and time and taking risk

• The ability to analyze and interpret diverse, complex data, time, human power

• Critical thinking and the ability to evaluate designs, plans and projects

• Awareness of professional and ethical issues

• Use of materials, equipment, machines and human power effectively

• Constructing formwork for different structure

• Rebar works: bending, cutting, overlapping and its arrangement.

• Care for drawings, documents and resources

FINAL INTERNSHIP REPORT BY KEBEDE CHALLA @ RVU LABU LAFTO CAMPUSE 2023 Page-13
3.2 In terms of improving industrial problem-solving capability

In order to solve problems, there should be effective communication in every direction within the
organization. Good communication with others. I have tried to Specify problems by in quantifiable
terms like who, what, where, when, why and how

• improving interpersonal communication

• How to resolve conflicts that arise during work

• How to compromise problems that arise in intrapersonal relationships

• How to explain situations in ways most understandable.

• use team to solve problems

• choose permanent correction for problems

3.3 In terms of upgrading our theoretical knowledge

The time that I spent at internship tries to gather practical knowledge regarding of
construction project, has also upgrades my theoretical knowledge that I obtained
from education or class room. In class room we only know what is done on papers,
but after I joined construction industries I view how class room work is real to
practical world. Thus it implies that internship upgrades my theoretical knowledge.
Since practical work is developed from theoretical, I upgraded my theoretical
knowledge by revising what I learned at class during internship time as well

3.4 Team playing skills acquired

The ability to work in team is a skill set in its own. It is clear that team work has a
great advantage in development of any work. In site, it is very important to play as a
team. If there are disagreements between any parties which are participated in the
project, it is very difficult to go ahead with the construction works. Knowing this I
have developed team work playing skill both by practicing and observing during my
internship. During my internship I worked hard to participate on team works. This
time was completely wonder full in developing my team playing skills, and much
more all the tasks I have been handling were team works. Skills that I developed for
being good team player:

• Functions as an active participant and team.

• Develop friendship among the teams and others.

• Develop knowledge through many sharing different ideas openly.

• I learned that how team works create trust between team members.

• I learned how team works create collaboration among team members

FINAL INTERNSHIP REPORT BY KEBEDE CHALLA @ RVU LABU LAFTO CAMPUSE 2023 Page-14
• Team members must know how to examine team and individual errors without
making personal attacks.

• The team member should respect other.

• The team members should express their opinion without any fear.

• They must be good information gather about the work

3.5 Leadership Skills Acquired

Leadership is a process of influencing individual or groups to accomplish an

organizational goal. COTM Engineers need to be effective leaders. When asking and
communicating the Engineers, supervisors, and Foreman and General managers; I
have collected too much information and basic concepts on how to manage the
available labor, material, and property also the Engineer help me to develop my
leadership concept by applying practical activity. As a result I knew more than what I
had before in terms of leadership skills from the experience and more skilled peoples
in the company. Leadership skill required

• Sense of responsibility

• Positive expectation about team members

• Self confidence

• Make sound and timely decisions.

• Ensure that tasks are understood, supervised, and accomplished.

• Know your people and look out for their well-being. From this what I understand is
becoming a leader is not easy because it takes a conscious commitment and
consistent effort to develop one’s leadership skills. But it is possible for anyone who
is willing to make the effort, can become a good leader.

3. 6 the benefits acquired in terms of understanding work Ethics

Work ethics is one of the regulations that the workers follows on the job task. Work
ethics such as honesty (not lying, chatting and stealing), doing a job well, valuing
what one does having a sense of purpose and filling /being a greater vision or plan is
vital. The company that I have internship program have put with a document the right
and regulation of workers. During the job I follow every work ethics for good forward
of the projects. If the workers environment well connected on their work they put
positive progress on the project activity. Because of these any company by following
all the regulation of work ethics they get positive regulation their project progress.
These are one of the important skills that every worker knows in every day to day
work activities in the construction industries. In every activity I follow all the

FINAL INTERNSHIP REPORT BY KEBEDE CHALLA @ RVU LABU LAFTO CAMPUSE 2023 Page-15
regulation of the company because of these I improve my work ethics skills on my
work tasks, I always try to exercise: -

• Cooperation: being interactive and cooperate with the others

• Office discipline: in work place don’t have to disturb the working condition.

• Punctuality: means keeping the companies work beginning time to complete the
given task on the given period.

• Accountability: accountability is a key requirement of good engineers.

• Open mindedness: I have to be open minded since it makes the work to be done
understandably.

• Friendly (well relation) with the workers.

3.7 The benefits I acquired in terms of entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship is the process of involving the creation of new enterprises and that
the entrepreneur is the founder. It is the process of starting a business, a startup
company or organization. The entrepreneur develops a business plan acquires the
human and other required resources and is fully responsible for its success or
failure. Entrepreneurial activities differ substantially depending on the type of
organization and creativity involved. Working as an intern on the company gave me
an idea how my future career looks like. Site supervision work was good experience
in terms of understanding how the work is done. In terms of entrepreneurship skill,
we obtained some knowledge how to be a contractor or a consultant on construction
sector and how to be profitable and how attract customer towards our company. In
addition to this we acquire

• Look for new information

• Be active in technical knowledge and speaking ability.

• Be ready to win (get) small contracts (as sub-contractor)

• Providing better way for the work flow and project duration.

• The ability to solving conflict that create between labors

• The ability to perform multi work at the same time (ability to orders the workers in
different work)

3.8 Interpersonal communication skills

During the internship I know that every task in site and office is very difficult do
individually and to do the work based on the schedule it needs a team of different
professionals or it needs a network of skilled persons. Interpersonal communication

FINAL INTERNSHIP REPORT BY KEBEDE CHALLA @ RVU LABU LAFTO CAMPUSE 2023 Page-16
skill plays a vital role in daily activities of the society in the site work and office works
and also whatever job. Good communications are the connection bridge of any
profession for doing task peacefully and do on time and economically. It has also the
following advantages:

• To share ideas between colleagues

• To upgrade good habits, like to help each other’s

• To exchange skills and knowledge

• To create agreement by listening others idea

• To handle information

• To respect and tolerate peoples

• To facilitate work task

CHAPTER FIVE
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

4.1 Conclusion

The internship program has been an enlightening me in exposing to the real

engineering work and put theoretical knowledge into practice. This helps the
students to carry out their job easily after their graduation as experts. It had
challenges but, in the end, it left me with knowledge that I would not acquire if I spent
the time learning in the university. Internship covers all attachment of students to the
practical implementation of the theory that was covered in school. I have been
involved in the internship program for the last four months in MCG Construction plc.
During the internship period I have got relevant practical experiences, professional
and entrepreneurial skills which are very important for the rest of my life. When
theoretical knowledge is supported by practical activities, it become crucial power for
performing some activities and enables us to take part in production. Since skill is a
power and an important machine for production, it is important to participate in
practical activities to gain these different skills. This internship program helps me to
apply what I have been learning in theory. It also helps me to observe & practice a
real work of discipline and to deal with different problems and their solving methods.
The work ethics & principles as well as the management of site and the way of
performing a given tasks are the main benefits I have gained from the internship. It
was the deterministic period in which I decide my future life in the real world.
Generally, from this internship program I have gained Learn Practical consideration
for building and Road construction & design, upgrade my theoretical knowledge &
visualizations, knowing about work ethics, to improve problem solving skills,
managing of human power & different section skills, allows me to develop
professional contacts with different working teams, for my future job searching
FINAL INTERNSHIP REPORT BY KEBEDE CHALLA @ RVU LABU LAFTO CAMPUSE 2023 Page-17
process, to know my own strength & weakness, the Work flow of a given company
etc.

4.2 Recommendation

During the stay I had in head Office and on site, I were able to see the construction
of substructure and super structure structural elements. The followings are some of
my recommendation for both the company and university.

Final Report For the university

• The university should help the students to easily understand what they have learn
in laboratory. In this internship we saw how it is easy to understand on practical
work.

• To make the students more professional in the field of study, the learning process
should be more practical than theoretical.

For the company

• The hosting company must give priority for the health and safety of its all workers.
Helmets for the Foreman, Carpenter, and workers of dismantle formwork and the site
engineers and Hat for the workers (plastering, bar bending).

• The concrete worker must wear hand glove, safety shoes & uniform cloth

• Steel reinforcement is not stored on the wood bed prepared so that this causes the
reinforcement to corrosion. So, you have to store at some height above the ground
using the wood bedding materials.
