1. Introduction

Advanced Manufacturing Partnership 2.0 in USA [3], Revitalization and Robots Strategy in Japan [2], Made in
China 2025 and Internet + Manufacturing [4, 5], to name a few. This transformation will require a significant
change in work- force skills, organizational structures, leadership mechanisms and corporate culture [1].
Recently, World Bank’s Chief Expert, Francisco Marmolejo in the Industry Revolution Seminar 4.0 said that the
higher education system across the country will also undergo changes in the industrial revolution of 4.0[6].
Universities and their engineering institutes play a vital role in covering this need.
The revolution and the impact of Industrial Internet already can be seen in education that needs to be in
accordance with the growth of the technology to produce a world class work force. Innovative and entrepreneurial
skills must be possessed by new graduates and they must deal with complexity with cognitive flexibility. The
need for better communication and collaborative skills will be far more important than ever. Graduates must
acquire self- learning skills to remain relevant in the era of rapid changes. The impacts of Industrial Internet on
the continuing professional development training demand lecturers and teachers to acquire knowledge of
instructional design and information and communications technology (ICT). It is hoped that lecturers can increase
their teaching effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity [7].
In line with the development of Industrial Internet, lecturers and teachers have upgraded and improved the
education provided to graduates or school leavers. Since the bigdata, cloudcomputing, data analytics, artificial
intelligence, machine learning, IoT systems, adaptive robotics, virtualization and additive manufacturing are the
main technology components of Industrial Internet, all these subjects should be included and taught
comprehensively in the engineering education programs. Engineering education requires the collaboration of
academic disciplines with the development of highly complex, sociotechnical systems. The Industrial Internet
entails collaborations between technology specialists and industrial experts who are adept at integrating their
specialized knowledge and disciplinary expertise. Preparing graduates for their future involvement in such
interdisciplinary collaborations requires educators to design and implement interdisciplinary teaching in higher
education. In order to foster students’ engagement in interdisciplinary learning, a meaningful understanding of
how interdisciplinary learning occurs in interdisciplinary workplace is essential [8, 9, 10].
To respond to the needs of Industrial Internet, universities must continue to play their role as proving ground
for educating the future generation and innovation. What’s more, close collaboration with industry and
stakeholders will be even more important to implement Education. Rapid technology advancement in the
Industrial Internet has undoubtedly posed a great challenge to the education system in higher education institutes
and changed every aspect of our lives including education. Higher education institutions across the world are
amalgamating technology in modern learning and teaching approaches such as online learning [11], massive
open online courses (MOOC) and distance education, blended learning, flipped classroom model [12, 13, 14].
Various online learning platforms also have been developed to communicate and interact between teacher and,
to utilize of mobile learning and gamification in enhancing learner’s soft skills [15].
From above, it can be concluded that educators have analyzed the revolution and the impact of Industrial
Internet in education, and then have redesigned higher education to upgrade and improve their teaching
effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity. Thus far, there is not a comprehensive talent training mechanism to
cover the transformation of Industrial Internet on relevant disciplines. The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)
can be the basis of Industrial Internet. Industrial Internet will help to update the existing curriculum system and
knowledge structure of IIoT, to redesign the curriculum plan and personal training program, that will enhance
the talent capacity in line with the challenge with the innovative development of manufacturing industry. At
present, the teaching problems of IIoT in universities are as follows [16, 17]:
(1) There is lack of Industrial Internet oriented talent training program, curriculum system and teaching
materials;
(2) It is short of industry-education integration and interdisciplinary education environment;
(3) There is a shortage of interdisciplinary teachers, and it is difficult to introduce them;
(4) Leading talents of IIoT are scarce and it is impossible to bring in.

Addressing the above problems, Sichuan University, Yunnan Minzu University and others proposed and
practiced a set of multi-level three-dimensional interdisciplinary mechanism for undergraduate. The team have
(1) established the personnel training plan for industrial Internet, and compiled the relevant textbooks;
(2) found the mechanism of interdisciplinary integration of multi-disciplines and multi-units to promote
discipline development;
(3) constituted a one-to-one responsibility & multi-mentor cooperation improvement program for raw recruits
to remit the shortage and difficulties in introducing of teachers;
(4) built the multiple consultants’ scheme to promote the growth of leading talents jointly.
The rest of the paper is organized as follows. In Sect. 2, we review the redesigning IIoT talent cultivating
mechanism. Then, we review the interdisciplinary teaching, teaching team construction and cultivation of leading
talents of IIoT in Sects. 3,4 and5.The paper is concluded in Sect. 6.

2. Redesigning IIoT talent cultivating mechanism

We have put forward an innovative and replicable multi-level talent cultivating mechanism, including under-
graduate talent training, discipline construction and development for IIoT in accordance with Industrial Internet.

2.1. Establishing Compound talent training program of IIoT

In this study, a talent training program for undergraduate students of the IIoT for the Industrial Internet has
been formulated, including the following aspects.
(1) Training objective for Industrial Internet
To cultivate research-oriented, compound and diversified world-class innovative and entrepreneurial talents,
the goal is that the learners can be engaged in the planning, design, development, deployment, management,
teaching and related research of the Industrial Internet application system.
(2) Training requirements
Students should learn the basic theory and knowledge of the IIoT, receive the basic training of research and
application of the Industrial Internet, and have the basic ability of related research and development. In the
training process, we should pay attention to the engineering spirit and engineering awareness, as well as the
innovation and scientific research ability to meet the urgent needs of talents in Industrial Internet.

2.2. Customized curriculum system

To better solve and analyze problems for students, some comprehensive training, problem-oriented and inter-
disciplinary courses have been built. Then elective courses have been integrated, and the training of compulsory
courses has been strengthened. The course of “Exploration on the Frontiers of IIoT Engineering” has been built
through the “Perceiving the Future Exploratory Curriculum Construction Project” of the “Double First-Class”
construction of the universities.
According to different characteristics of the courses, a variety of teaching methods such as inquiry, discussion,
case-study and heuristic are employed to mobilize students’ enthusiasm and initiative. The teaching methods are
integrated with centralized face-to-face teaching, industry on-site teaching, micro-class, “online” + “online”,
small class combination and others.
Courses assessment has been gradually improved, which has been changed from paper-based examination to
a combination of written, computer-based testing, design and team task examination. When testing, design
proposition has been added, dynamic pass-line has been used, and students have been encouraged to take part in
the software ability test.

2.3. Professional teaching materials construction

For the shortage of professional teaching materials, we translated and compiled a series of teaching materials
for IIoT according to different application scenarios and key technical contents. At present, we have compiled
the following textbooks: “College Computer Application Foundation”, “ C Language Course”, “C++ :
Object- oriented programming ”, “Data Structure and Algorithm Analysis”, “Data Structure & Algorithm
Experiment and Course Design”, “Mobile Sensors and Situational Awareness”, “Soc Technology Principle and
Application”, “Green Calculation Principle and Application”, “Industrial IoT Core Technology (Edge Gateway)”,
“ Introduction To Network Security”, “Embedded System Design”, “Software Development Practice”, etc.

2.4. Innovation of teaching method

First of all, different teaching models should be developed for students with different training objectives. For
academic talents, students are guided to research and exploration in 5G, big data, security, intelligent
manufacturing and other directions, and encouraged to actively participate in the “information +” medicine
and other interdisciplinary scientific research; For application-oriented talents, software and hardware platforms
are actively built in teaching to cultivate students’ practical ability and strengthen their application and
understanding of key technologies of IIoT platform. Students are encouraged to actively participate in Industrial
Internet competitions. Second, students’ engineering spirit and awareness are improved. In the training process,
students are allowed to the industrial site and familiar with the industrial process. They can understand the
production demand from the process of market planning, design, manufacturing, sales and maintenance, make
full use of the data of physical model, sensor updating and operation history. Third, to promote the integration of
different disciplines, Sichuan University has set up a number of Industrial Internet industry platforms, and
training bases with enterprises and research institutes. In this way, a talent training environment has been built
around the Industrial Internet to cultivate versatile talents. Fourthly, drawing on the domestic and abroad
experience of cultivating engineering talents, we offer international courses, carry out international activities and
award international degrees for students.

3. Interdisciplinary teaching

3.1. Establishing an Industrial Internet research institute

Based on the comprehensive advantages of teaching and research, Sichuan University established the first
Industrial Internet Research Institute in China in 2016. The institute integrated the university’s advanced
manufacturing disciplines to carry out researches on Industrial Internet architecture, technical standards and
security. The institution worked with key industries to build an independent and controllable system of innovation
and application of China’s industrial Internet, to support the top-level national strategy, to break through common
problems in the industry, helping the transformation and upgrading of the economy and achieving high-quality
development.

3.2. Establishing an Industrial Internet research institute

To improve the innovation ability of Industrial Internet and promote integrated development, Sichuan
University has successively established 7 Industrial Internet research centers, including the Research Center of
Interconnected Chemical Industry, Smart Water Resources, Ubiquitous Power IIoT and etc.

4. Teaching team construction

4.1. One-on-one responsibility & multi-tutor cooperation training mode

Doctorates and post-doctorates are the potential teachers of the school. In view of the shortage of IIoT teachers,
the team explored the One-on-one responsibility & multi-tutor cooperation training mode for postgraduate and
post-doctoral training. That is, on the basis of the admission of tutors, through certain incentive policies to
encourage tutors to carry out project and academic crossover for the development of doctors and postdocs.

4.2. Training of raw recruits

Great importance has been attached to training of teaching and scientific research ability for young teachers.
In training, teaching evaluation and counseling activities have been carried out to attract and infect raw recruits.

4.3. Cultivation of leading talents of IIoT

To break through the scarceness and introduction difficulties of leading talents for IIoT disciplinary
construction, the team gave full play to the organizational guarantee role of the school, research institute and
research centers, organized and carried out research on strategic issues and major decision-making consultation,
and formed a coordinated talent training and incentive mechanism. The multiple consultants’ scheme has been
built to promote the growth of leading talents jointly.

5. Application and Implication

This cultivating mechanism has been built to develop the students’ scientific thought, capacity for independent
thinking and innovation, basic knowledge of mathematics and science, Industrial Internet- oriented specialized
knowledge and skills. IIoT involves professional knowledge in multiple disciplines and fields. The team has
developed a customized curriculum system, which focuses on enhancing students’ engineering and research
abilities. Students have been allowed to flexibly choose specialized courses according to their needs. The teaching
effect and efficiency have been significantly improved. In the last four years, more than 30 percent of
undergraduate graduates participated in scientific research by summarizing, collating & analyzing experimental
results and writing scientific papers, striving to obtain master’s and doctoral degrees. Nearly 40 percent of the
graduates worked for companies such as Alibaba, Tencent, Huawei, Haier, Changhong and etc. With the help of
Internet of Things Industry Development Alliance, Sichuan University has shared the IIoT talent cultivating
mechanism, course system and reference materials with other universities and relative enterprises.
The group has translated and edited 13 textbooks with detailed explanations, novel themes, which are closely
combined with practical application, and welcomed by teachers and students. More than 100,000 copies have
been published as textbooks or reference materials by more than 130 universities. The team employed and
implemented a series of innovative methods in the teaching process, and achieved some teaching awards. In 2020,
the IIoT discipline of Sichuan university has been approved as the provincial first-class undergraduate program
in Sichuan Province. In 2017, IIoT discipline of Sichuan University ranked 13th among similar majors in China.
With teaching team construction, an efficient mechanism has been established to strengthen the faculty. Up to
now, we have cross-trained more than 300 excellent masters. The team has developed more than 60 outstanding
doctors, postdocs and young teachers, many of whom have become the backbone of the faculty. One member
of the team became a national Yangtze River scholar. Three of them are chief scientists of Key Special Project
of Ministry of Science and Technology of China.

6. Result and discussion

In view of the undergraduate teaching problems of the IIoT, the team has put forward and practiced a set of
multi-level cross-training mechanism for talents, including: formulating the corresponding undergraduate talent
training program and course system, compiling the relevant textbooks, and implementing the relevant innovative
teaching methods. The crew explored the mechanism of the interdisciplinary integration of multi-disciplines and
multi-units to promote the discipline construction; The group advocated the discipline construction mechanism
of one-to-one responsibility and multi-tutor cooperation. The team practiced the discipline development
mechanism of multi-consultant to jointly promote the growth of leading talents. In the future, it is necessary to
strengthen the Industrial Internet talent demand prediction, dynamically adjust the establishment and
implementation of talent training mechanism. And it is essential to establish an Industrial Internet talent
evaluation system to guide the reform of talent training.
