The Unified Screw Thread Standard is a integrated system of threads for fastening
purposes in mechanisms and structures. The accepted standard for Halliburton Energy
Services is ANSI B1.1 - Unified Inch Screw Threads. Where special requirements are
needed for federal government agencies, Federal Standard FED-STD-H28, Screw-
Thread Standards for Federal Services, (Standard H28) should be consulted.
The Unified Screw Thread Standard supersedes the American National thread. How-
ever, since these two standards have substantially the same thread form, threads with
the same diameter and pitch are mechanically interchangeable. For general applica-
tions on older Halliburton documents (i.e., manuals, drawings, etc.) that contain the
American National designation the Unified Series may be substituted.
Graded Pitches:
Course Series - UNC
Fine Series - UNF
Extra-Fine Series - UNEF
Constant Pitches:
4-thread series - 4UN
6-thread series - 6UN
8-thread series - 8UN
12-thread series - 12UN
16-thread series - 16UN
20-thread series - 20UN
28-thread series - 28UN
32-thread series - 32UN
To the above designation can be added "R" for rounded root contour thread
(external only), and "S" for special series.
Examples: UNR, UNS, UNRS.
The classes differ from each other by the amounts of tolerance and allow-
ance. Allowances are specified for Classes 1 and 2 only, and are indentical
for both classes. Tolerance decreases as class number increases.
Class 1 has a liberal allowance and is used for applications where assembly
is easy. Class 2 threads are the most commonly used for general applica-
tions. Class 3 provides for closeness of fit and accuracy. Halliburton Class
M is for internal threads only and is based on Class 3, but is enough
oversize to guarantee a free- running fit.
The Unified series also provides for designation of thread type symbol with
the class symbol:
A is an external thread.
B is an internal thread.
The listing of a thread in Section 12.6.1 and 12.8.1 indicates that a thread
gauge is available. No unlisted thread (straight or tapered) is to be speci-
fied without the approval of the designer's Technology Manager.
Threads are designated by nominal size, threads per inch (TPI), series,
thread class, internal or external designation, and special designation, if any.
Two other symbols can be added to the above designation: LH and/or SPL.

When left hand is required it must be indicated by the letter "LH," otherwise
the thread is understood to be right hand. "SPL" indicates the thread is not
to unified formulation. Usually, outside diameter (OD) or bore diameter (BD)
are nonstandard.
Example: 2 3/8-6UN-2A-LH-SPL
The class of fit should be specified, but if it is not, the thread will be cut with
commercial taps and dies to give approximately 75% full thread with class
2A/2B fit in the numbered range below 1/4 in. and in the fractional size
range from 1/4 through 3/4 in. In these sizes the closer fitting class 3A/3B
must be specified if required.

12.3 Three-Wire method of measuring pitch diameter for 60° V straight threads
The designer will not normally be involved with the calculation and measurement of
threads. Information is provided in this manual for general information of inspection
procedure.
The contact face of the comparator, or micrometer anvil or spindle over the two
wires must be of sufficient diameter to touch both wires. The size of wire that
touches exactly at the mid slope of a perfect thread of a given pitch is termed the
"best-size" wire for that pitch. Any size, however, may be used that will permit
the wires to rest on the flanks of the thread and also project above the crest of
the thread.

The size of wire touching at the midslope, or "best-size" wire is given by the
formula:
P
W= Sec α
2
(Eq. 12.3.2-1)
in which
W = diameter of wire, in.
P = pitch, inch
α = half included angle of thread, degrees

MANUAL 04-10-97 D3-12
On occasion, it may be necessary, when a "best size" thread wire is not avail-
able, to measure pitch diameter by means of wires of other than the "best size."
The minimum size that may be used is limited to that size permitting the wire to
project above the crest of the thread. The maximum is the size that permits the
wire to rest on the flanks of the thread just below the crest, but not to ride on the
crest of the thread. The diameters of the best size maximum and minimum wires
for 60° threads are given in Table 1.
The practice of using holding means such as rubber bands, which have a ten-
dency to prevent wires from adjusting themselves to the proper position in the
thread grooves, may result in false measurements.
Section 12.3 of this manual is based on Standard H28. The Federal Standard
should be reviewed before using the three-wire method.

MANUAL 04-10-97 D3-12
The general formula for determining the pitch diameter of any 60° thread whose
flanks are symmetrical with respect to a line drawn through the vertex and per-
pendicular to the axis of the thread, in which the slight effect of lead angle is
taken into account, is
E = MW +
cot a
2n
[ ]
− W 1+ (cosec2α +cot 2 α +tan2λ’ )1 / 2
(Eq. 12.3.4-1)
Eq. 12.3.4-1 can be converted to the following simplified form, which is particu-
larly useful when measuring threads of large lead angle:
cot a
E = M w + - W (1 + ( cos ecα ' )
2n
(Eq. 12.3.4-2)
When Eq. 12.3.4-1 is used, the usual practice is to expand the square root term
as a series, retaining only the first and second terms, which give the following
For large lead angles it is necessary to measure the wire angle, but for lead
angles of 5° or less, if the "best-size" wire is used, this angle may be assumed to
be equal to the lead angle of the thread at the pitch line. The tangent of the lead
angle is given by the formula.
L 1
tanλ = =
3.1416E 3.1416 NE
(Eq. 12.3.4-4)
in which
L = lead
N = number of turns per inch
E = nominal pitch diameter, or an approximation of the measured pitch diameter.
12.3.5 Measurement of pitch diameter of all USA standard 60° straight threads
(unified, hose-coupling, and pipe)
cotα
E = MW + - W(1 + cosec α )
2n
(Eq. 12.3.5-1)
is neglected. Its value is small, being in all cases less than 0.00015 in. for stan-
dard fastening screws when the best-size wire is used.
For a 60° thread of correct angle and thread form, Eq. 12.3.4-3 simplifies to
0.86603
E = MW + - 3W
n
(Eq. 12.3.5-4)
E = MW - C
(Eq. 12.3.5-5)
Where C = constant
cotα
C = W (1 + cosecα ) -
2n
(Eq. 12.3.5-6)
The quantity C is a constant for a given thread angle. When the "best-size"
wires for the pitch and angle are used, the pitch diameter is obtained by the
simple operation of subtracting this constant from the measurement taken over
the wires. When best-size wires are used, this constant is changed very little by
a moderate deviation in the angle of the thread. However, when wires of other
than the best size are used, this constant changes apperciably with a deviation in
the angle of the thread.
With the exception of coarse-pitch screws, variation in angle from the basic size
causes no appreciable change in the quantity C for the best-size wires. When a
wire near the maximum or minimum allowable size is used, a considerable
change occurs, and the values of the cotangent and cosecant of the actual mea-
sured half angle are to be used. It is apparent, therefore, that there is great
advantage is using wires very closely approximating the best size. For conve-
nience in carrying out computations,
The values of cot α /2n for standard pitches are given in Table 2.
E = MW - (C + c)
(Eq. 12.3.5-8)
Tabular values for (C + c) for a 1-in. pitch screw for 60° threads are given in
Table 2. Values of (C + c) should be divided by the threads per inch for a given
case.

12.4 Gauge wear allowance and tolerance - all straight thread forms
Designer will not normally be involved in thread gauge design. Information in this sec-
tion is presented as general information.
A ring gauge is out of tolerance when its pitch diameter wears to the point that it ex-
ceeds the basic or maximum allowable pitch diameter of the external thread being
gauged. For this reason, the ring gauges are made adjustable, and should be fitted to
their master plugs periodically.
A plug gauge is out of tolerance when its pitch diameter wears below the basic or mini-
mum allowable pitch diameter of the internal thread. Since it is not economically practi-
cal to manufacture, or purchase, adjustable gauges, the plug gauge is manufactured
oversized to allow for wear. The amount of oversize will be termed wear allowance.
Since the production plug gauges receive more abrasion than the inspection plug
gauges, the production plug is given more wear allowance.
The addition of wear allowance to a plug gauge tends to decrease the difference be-
tween the go and no-go plug gauge pitch diameters. This decreases the machinist's
tolerance and increases production cost. For this reason, the no-go plug gauge is
manufactured oversize by the same amount as the wear allowance on the inspection go
plug gauge. Inspection and production no-go plug gauges are the same size.
Below in Table 4 is the wear allowance and tolerance that are used in the manufacture
of plug gauges and master plugs. It will be noted that master plugs have no wear
allowance since they are used only for setting ring gauges.

MANUAL 04-10-97 D3-12
LEGENDS
1. These values do not agree with and shall not be used in place of any tabulated values for the UNC, UNF, and 8UN thread series.
2. Formula:
Class 2A tolerances = ³√D + 0.0015 √L e + 0.015 ³√p ² where
D = basic major diameter
L e = length of engagement
p = pitch
3. Length of engagement increments included in the tabulated tolerances for length of engagement of from 5 to 15 pitches are based
on lengths of 9 pitches; those for lengths of engagement greater than 15 to 30 pitches are obtained by multiplying the 9-pitch values
taken to six decimal places by 1.25. For lengths of engagement not tabulated, the formula in legend 2 should be applied except as
modified.
4. Pitches listed are those used most commonly and are recommended. When intermediate pitches are specified, the formula in
legend 2 should be applied.
5. Tolerances are tabulated only for combinations of diameter, pitch and length of engagement which are considered to be generally
used. For other combinations encountered, see Section 5.

1. These values do not agree with and shall not be used in place of any tabulated values for the UNC, UNF, and 8UN thread series.
2. Class 3A tolerances in this table for 5 to 15 pitches are based on 9 pitches and are obtained by multiplying the Class 2A (external
thread) tolerances for 9 pitches taken to six decimal places by a factor of 0.75.
3. Class 3A tolerances in this table for 16 to 30 pitches are obtained by multiplying the Class 2A (external thread) tolerances for 9
pitches taken to six decimal places by a factor of 0.9375 (obtained by multiplying the 0.75 factor by 1.25). For lengths of engagement
not tabulated, see Section 5.
4. Pitches listed are those used most commonly and are recommended. When intermediate pitches are specified, the formula should
be applied.
5. Tolerances are tabulated only for combinations of diameter, pitch and length of engagement which are considered to be generally
used. For other combinations encountered, see Section 5.

1. These values do not agree with and shall not be used in place of any tabulated values for the UNC, UNF, and 8UN thread seri es.
2. Class 3B (internal thread) tolerances in this table for 5 to 15 pitches are based on 9 pitches and are obtained by multiply ing the
Class 2A (external thread) tolerances for 9 pitches taken to six decimal places by a factor of 0.975.
3. Class 3B tolerances in this table for 16 to 30 pitches are obtained by multiplying the Class 2A (external thread) tolerance s for 9
pitches taken to six decimal places by a factor of 1.21875 (obtained by multiplying the 0.975 factor by 1.25). For lengths of engage-

4. Pitches listed are those used most commonly and are recommended. Where intermediate pitches are specified, the formula shou ld
be applied.
5. Tolerances are tabulated only for combinations of diameter, pitch and length of engagement which are considered to be generally
used. For other combinations encountered, see Section 5.

1) Tolerances for lengths of engagement in terms pitch should be selected from equivalent lengths of engagement in terms of diameter ranges.
2) If the minor diameter tolerance as selected from the Table is less than pitch-daimeter tolerance, use the latter.
3) For 0.151-in. diameter sizes and smaller, tolerance values for all three classes are the same. For three smaller sizes, tolerance values are given in the table.

American Standard specifications for general purpose ACME threads require the inter-
nal PD to be basic and the external PD is smaller than basic by a specified PD allow-
ance as given in the Table 17.
When specifying a new thread (i.e., one for which there are no gauges), it is recom-
mended that American Standard specifications be used when practical. These threads
are designated by adding a class of fit and the letter "G" (for General Purpose National
ACME Thd) to the end of the thread callout. Example: 2-1/2 - 6 Acme 3G is a National
Acme Class 3 General Purpose thread.

.008 D for Class 2G* "G" is for General Purpose National Acme Threads.
* American Standard establishes only one class of thread for Stub Acme. This corre-
sponds to Acme Class 2G. However, Screw-Thread Standards for Federal Services
states, that if less backlash is desired, the allowances and tolerances of Classes 3G
and 4G Acme may be used.

Values for other threads may be found by interpolation, or by use of the following formu-
las:
for Class 2G Thd PD Tolerances = .006 D + .03 P
for Class 3G Thd PD Tolerances = .0028 D + .014 P
for Class 4G Thd PD Tolerances = .002 D + .01 P
Calculate PD for the thread. Add or subtract allowances and tolerances on the
Basic PD as applicable, depending on which thread system applies as shown in
(1) or (2) below:
For external thread (screw), the PD is the basic PD less the PD Allowance
(from Table 17), with minus tolerance (from Table 18).
The "GO" setting plug is basic less PD Allowance (from Table 17).
For the external thread (screw) the PD is the basic PD with a minus
tolerance.
The "GO" working plug is basic plus PD Allowance for this thread, plus
wear allowance, if any.
Add the (M-PD) value for Acme threads (from Table 15) or for Stub Acme (from
Table 16) to the calculated PD of thread to be measured. This is the "3-Wire
Diameter" of the thread.
Select correct size measuring wires (from Table 15) for Acme threads or (Table
16) for Stub Acme threads.

*Lc = L4 - 0.652 in. for 11 1/2 thread line pipe. Lc = L4 - 0.937 in. for 8 thread line pipe.
NOTE: Hand-tight Standoff "A" is the basic allowance for basic power makeup of the joint as shown in Fig. 2.1. It determines the
coupling thread diameter size and does not apply to the pipe thread.
Note: Old API listed on 2-in. size only. On some threads, Halliburton Energy Services
required the API Standards in effect before the November 1946 revison. For
14-in. and larger the size designations are by outside diameters. Dimensions
are carried for four or five decimal places for accuracy in computations only and
do not imply the amount of precision required.

Halliburton Gauge Point is at plane at which major diameter cone of thread intersects outside diameter of pipe, or "Plane of
Perfect Thread Length." This is designated as Plane No. 5 in Federal Screw-Thread Stds HB28. No. 5 is two pitches less than No.
2, effective thread plane.
The equation for this is L5 = L2 - 2P.
2
Li is length from pipe end to HT plane, M is length from coupling face to HT plane.

Approximate torque required to twist off screws at root diameter. The following
data is based on materials with a tensile strength of 100,000 lb. per square inch.
For materials of any other tensile strength, the torque required to twist off screw
is directly proportional to the tensile strength.
