ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to discover and comprehend how senior high school

students at Jacinto P. Elpa National High School feel about Tandag City's tourism-related

activities. Cities' economies depend heavily on tourism, which also has the power to

influence nearby towns. This study sheds light on the younger generation's awareness,

preferences, and viewpoints of Tandag City's tourism-related activities by evaluating

their points of view.

A structured questionnaire was used in the research's quantitative methodology to

collect data from a sample of senior high school pupils. The questionnaire had questions

about lodgings, attractions, transportation, and cultural experiences, among other areas of

travel. Tables and charts were used to illustrate the data, which were then used to

evaluate it using descriptive statistics to give a thorough summary of the students'

perceptions.

Additionally, it was determined that cultural encounters—such as regional

festivals and gastronomic offerings were important elements that improved the students'

overall travel experience. However, the study also pointed out areas that needed to be

improved, such as the requirement for greater promotion of Tandag City's tourism-related

activities and the creation of more varied and interesting attractions.

The findings of this study help us understand how young people in Tandag City

view the city's tourism-related activities. The results can be a useful tool for educators,

legislators, and local tourism stakeholders as they establish plans to improve experiences

for both locals and tourists. Tandag City can better match its tourism offers to the

changing interests and requirements of its prospective guests by taking into account the

preferences and viewpoints of the younger generation.

Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Tandag City takes pride in its rich cultural past, where contemporary influences

coexist peacefully with traditional customs. Senior high school students have the

exceptional chance to participate in a variety of events that will fully immerse them in the

city's diverse cultural heritage. They can go to the Surigao del Sur Provincial Museum,

which has relics and displays that demonstrate the traditions, customs, and crafts of the

Manobo and Mandaya tribes that live there. Students can learn traditional dances, take

part in arts and crafts activities, and comprehend the core of Tandag City's cultural

identity by attending cultural workshops (Alchetron, 2022).

Although there is a sizable corpus of study on tourism-related activities, there is a

lack of a thorough grasp of how current technological improvements have affected these

activities. Particularly, the use of technology like smartphone apps, augmented reality,

and virtual reality has profoundly changed how tourists interact with various tourism-

related events. The scholarly literature, however, has not sufficiently examined or offered

a thorough understanding of how these developing technologies may impact the general

design, planning, and execution of tourism operations. This emphasizes the requirement

for additional research on the application and effects of these emerging technologies in

the tourism sector. Understanding how smartphone apps, augmented reality, and virtual

reality affect tourism can provide (Wells, 2022).

This research aims to explore and understand the perceptions of these

students towards tourism activities in Tandag City and how they may impact

their attitudes and behaviors towards tourism development in their

community.

This study will provide valuable insights for policymakers and

tourism stakeholders to better understand and address the perceptions of the

local

population towards tourism activities in Tandag City.

Theoretical /Conceptual Framework

The development theory and then reviews its current state. It is

suggested that capitalism and international tourism are with us for the

foreseeable future, and that as international tourism is a cross-border activity

consistently linking individuals and institutions across 'developing' and

'developed countries, such a distinction is of no value in conceptualizing

tourism, which should be seen as operating in an international and systemic

way. A global model of tourism political economy is suggested, which

incorporates international, intra-regional and domestic tourism.

The Network Theory (ANT) and its utility for tourism studies. It

argues that ANT can be an effective methodological approach for studying

tourism development due to two reasons. First, its ability to deal with

relational materiality of the social world, immanent in the concept of

translation which highlights the net-work practices of different actors; and

second, its willingness to grasp multiple relational orderings, thus drawing

diverse forms of tourism spatiality into analysis. The article begins by

briefly sketching out the discourse on tourism and tourism development in

consumers' behavioral intention. Tourists often have intention to visit a

destination if the destination personality is congruent with their own

personality (Litvin & Goh, 2002; Sirgy & Su, 2000). Nevertheless, other

scholars argued that there is a need in conducting further studies with the

aim of developing and testing global or integrative models that have been

developed in recent years. (Chen & Phou, 2013, Elliot et al. 2011; Zhang et

al. 2014)

These theories are important and as these theories can enhance the

growth of the community. They introduce the importance of tourism and

give information about how people come up with each of their solution to a

certain problem that relates to tourism. They are considered as a tool that

gives knowledge about tourism and is beneficial towards the study of

tourism.

Tourism awareness as an independent variable It includes the level of

understanding of senior high school students about the importance of

tourism in Tandag City. This component also encompasses their knowledge

of the various tourism activities in the area, including historical sites, natural

attractions, and cultural events.

Another variable is tourism promotion It covers the strategies and

approaches used by senior high school students to promote tourism activities

in Tandag City. This includes the use of social media platforms, marketing

campaigns, and other promotional activities to increase the awareness and

interest of tourists.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to explore the perceptions and practices of senior high

school students regarding the preservation of tourism activities in Tandag

City.

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following research

questions:

1. What is the students perception towards tourism activities in

Tandag City?

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The study aims to identify the different tourist attractions, events,

and activities in Tandag City, as well as to examine the role of the senior

high school students in preserving these activities.

The study is conducted within the premises of Jacinto P. Elpa

National High School, which is located in Tandag City. The data collection

methods used in this study may include surveys, interviews, and

observations of tourism activities.

This study will seek to identify the different tourism activities in

Tandag City that are being preserved by the senior high school students and

to determine their level of awareness and involvement in preserving these

tourism activities. The study may also identify the challenges encountered

by the senior high school students in preserving these tourism activities.

Significance of the study

This study aims to contribute the development of the tourism industry

in Tandag City by identifying the various tourism activities that are being

preserved and promoted by the students. By understanding the unique

perspectives and contributions of the students, the local government and

tourism authorities can better tailor their efforts to cater to the needs and

interests of both tourists and the local community

Community. Tourism can have a huge impact on the community,

locally and globally. From the local to the global it is important that tourism

develops in order to create sustainable jobs and provide a way for people

from around the world to connect with their home country's culture.

resources and climate change.

Department of Education. Tourism is the key component of the

national economy that fuels growth and development. And it can be a great

tool to enhance higher education in our country and uplift our economy.

Tourism promotes economic development through foreign exchange

earnings, access to international markets, employment reactions and exports,

income generation and other means.

Future Researchers. It is hoped that the data provided by this study

will be useful for future researchers who will be interested in the area of

tourism by giving them the factual data on the status of tourism activities

and tourist traffic in Tandag City.

Local Government Units. Tourism is one of the most important cash

crops in the Philippines. This can be attributed to the strong tourist industry,

which is relatively new compared with other countries around the world.

The tourism industry also contributes greatly to economic development and

prosperity in the local government unit (LGU).

Various forms of study have been done on the Dubai tourism sector.

They have not, however, been able to identify the functions that Dubai's

tourism sector performs The current study aims to evaluate the functions of

tourism in Dubai and its development, as well as to unearth pertinent data

that promotes the expansion of the city's tourism sector. The infrastructure,

tactics, and culture that support Dubai's tourism industry's expansion are

covered in the current article. The construction of the Burj Khalifa, the

highest structure in both Dubai and the entire world, is a reflection of the

city's desire to attract tourists. The Dubai tourism industry has been the

subject of numerous studies. However, they have not been able to pinpoint

the tasks that Dubai's tourism industry carries out. The current study intends

to assess the roles played by tourism in Dubai and how it has evolved, as

well as to find relevant information that will help the city's tourism industry

grow. The current article discusses the setting, strategies, and culture that

enable Dubai's tourism industry's growth. The Burj Khalifa's construction as

the tallest building in Dubai and the entire world is evidence of the city's

ambition to draw tourists.

In Canadian geography departments, tourism research dates back to

R.I. in the early 1950s study on the effects of Ontario vacation spots by

Wolfe. Prior to that, the majority of studies were "in house," carried out by

government organizations and for-profit businesses with a stake in the

tourism industry, such as Parks Canada, the Canadian Office of Tourism,

and the Canadian Pacific Corporation. The geographic approaches and

concepts applied to the study field range from analyses of operations in the

tourism-related service industry to holistic environmental studies originating

from the Parks Canada mandate. The broader conceptual geographic

evolution can be used to identify a variety of key focus areas, including

carrying capacity, land use differentiation, destination area impact, spatial

linking application to the development of tourism destinations, and regional

historical study, to name a few. By placing these notions in an evolutionary-

historical framework of analysis, this paper explains how they came to be

used in Canadian tourist research.

In recent years, Indonesia's tourism industry has flourished and is now

one of the country's primary sources of foreign currency gains. The tourist

potential of Indonesia's natural resources is yet underutilized. By 2019, the

government wants to increase the number of visitors from roughly 14

million in 2017 to 20 million. Bali will still be the key travel hub. The

government intends to develop other locations using Bali as the preferred

development model, especially through infrastructure programs to improve

accessibility, which has long been a problem for both regional development

and tourism. The local population's employment options will increase if their

tourism-related skills are improved. Reforms to vocational education and

training are required as a result. Furthermore, the government's recent

initiatives to enhance the business climate must be maintained, notably

through assisting businesses in embracing digitalization. In some locations,

tourism may be expanding too quickly without taking environmental and

social sustainability concerns into sufficient consideration. More sustainable

tourist development can be facilitated by better planning and coordination

across relevant policy areas and at all levels of government. (Ollivaud,

Both domestic and foreign travelers continue to have access to travel

and tourism possibilities in the United States. This is the first book that

provides students with an in-depth analysis of both travel and tourism in this

area, with a focus on the social science fields of geography, tourism studies,

and more broadly, social science. Paying attention to the factors that

influenced the development of the current product, tourism in the USA

demonstrates how tourism has changed over time. The book's main subject

is how tourism has operated in diverse contexts; also, the role of federal,

state, and local policy is analyzed in terms of the impacts it has had on the

US travel industry and on destinations. The impact of transportation

particularly American's high personal mobility rates and love affair with the

auto, on the sector is stressed. The many components of tourism demand and

supply are explored. Before concentrating more intently on the specific

urban and rural contexts where tourism happens, the economics of tourism

are developed. Additionally, a look at how tourism alters the spatial structure

of cities is provided. Along with descriptions of how tourism is growing as a

tool for economic development in different regions, a brief discussion of

potential challenges in American tourism is also included. The book

integrates a variety of helpful student-oriented materials to promote learning

and spark further discussion. These resources can be used for independent

study or in-class activities. A few of these are: "Closer Look" case studies

with reflective questions to help put theory into practice and promote critical

thinking about tourism developments in this region "Discussion Questions"

at the end of each chapter to promote lively discussions "Further Reading"

The Outer Danajon Bank in the Philippines has poor management of

its marine resources. The Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation

(CCEF), a Philippine environmental organization, is working to improve it

in partnership with Region 7 municipal leaders from Cebu, Leyte, and Bohol

as well as various financial donors. One of the objectives is to promote

scuba diving along the Outer Bank, starting with the Bien Unido

municipality on Bohol Island. Dive tourism is currently nonexistent in the

municipality, despite prior efforts by the Bien Unido mayor to draw in

investors and visitors. The mayor, the CCEF, and a private real estate

developer decided to invest in infrastructure and livelihood training in Bien

Unido over the summer of 2011 in order to grow the scuba diving tourism

sector there. The existing community perspectives on the growth of dive

tourism in Bien Unido and four other chosen diving tourist cities are

analyzed in this study. The study includes 1117 quantitative surveys of

In the Philippines, where it has been a cornerstone of the economy

since the 1970s, tourism has been pursued as a development alternative

While domestic tourism continues to dominate international visitation,

overseas arrivals are growing at double-digit rates. Recent legislation

pertaining to tourism over the last two years has continued to emphasize the

industry as a growth engine. However, such legislation should be considered

in the context of neighborhood stakeholder relationships, power dynamics,

and governance systems, which include procedures for both tourism and

comprehensive land use planning. There are not enough environmental

planners in the nation, where tourism planning is a subspecialty. Since 1992,

local governments have struggled to keep up with the demands of

implementing national legislation due to a national government that

transferred its extensive responsibilities in land use and tourism planning to

those local governments. In turn, these tense interactions have detrimental

effects on the environment, which are well-documented in Boracay Island's

experiences. Given the difficulties of the current political and administrative

frameworks in the national and local governments, tourism planning in the

nation's broader environmental planning spectrum needs to be reevaluated in

terms of the connections, working relationships, and power relations

between the various stakeholders in the land use-tourism planning processes.

Vernadette Vicua Gonzalez demonstrates in Securing Paradise how

military and tourism have coexisted in Hawaii and the Philippines to enable

the US to advance its geostrategic and commercial goals in the Pacific. She

accomplishes this through digging into contemporary tourist practices,

and military construction projects, and more. For instance, US military

modalities of mobility, control, and surveillance permit scenic tourist

byways in both Hawaii and the Philippines. The Pearl Harbor complex, the

Clark and Subic Bases, and other former and current US military

installations have been repurposed into destinations for travelers interested

in World War II. Tourist itineraries and imaginations at these places are built

on the history of the US military. At the same time, the logics and behaviors

of consumption and mobility that underlie contemporary tourism serve to

sustain US military superiority. Together, militarism and tourism create

gendered knowledge and emotional structural formations. In Hawaii and the

Philippines, these become routine parts of daily life, instilling US

imperialism in the Pacific. (Duke University Press, 2013)

Ecotourism, medical, health, wellness, and retirement tourism,

meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions (MICE), adventure,

outdoor sports, amusement, entertainment, and leisure tourism, as well as

cultural and heritage tourism, are some of the key subsectors of Philippine

tourism (Alvia and Libosada, Jr., 2009). At market values, the gross

domestic product (GDP) of the Philippines was estimated to be US $99

which also creates 1.5 million jobs. Over 3.49 million people were working

in the tourist sector in 2006, both directly and indirectly.

It is a common belief that the requirements and interests of foreign

visitors determine the creation of tourist attractions, the creation of tourism

regulations, and the marketing of destination places. The part local variables

and organizations play in these processes is disregarded. The form and

purpose of tourist development are examined in this essay in relation to local

and global variables. I investigate the heritage tourism phenomena in

Singapore as the result of "local" and "global" influences using Singapore as

a case study. Three avenues of inquiry are used to further develop this thesis.

A study of the government's tourism regulations is among them. An analysis

"globalism/localism" by cultural/economic geographers from the 1990s as

well as the "locality idea" put forth by industrial geographers in the 1980s.

The argument that location singularity should not be sacrificed as a result of

globalization is supported by both theoretical discussions. They also offer a

perspective on how local and global forces interact to produce tourism

geographies. (Chang, 1999)

Due to intense tourism operations, Bangladesh's one and only coral-

bearing island has undergone ecological catastrophe. As a result of eco-

unfriendly mass tourism and unregulated tourism operations, the island is

subjected to huge loads of sewage and trash disposal. For the delicate

ecosystem of Saint Martin's Island, only sustainable tourism is acceptable

(Nafi & Ahmed, 2017). Domestic academic travel, which involves students

traveling to study within their own countries, and international academic

travel, which involves students traveling outside of their own nations, are the

two categories into which academic travel can be separated (Arcodia et. al,

In many mountainous places around the world, winter sports tourism

is a major economic driver. Winter sports and winter outdoor activities have

received the most attention in research to date, with the effects of climate

change and adaptation measures being the main topics of study. Winter

sports are one of several product types, according to an analysis of German

winter vacations. The majority of German travelers favor long-haul, warm-

weather destinations in the winter, which begs the issue of what causes

people to take winter vacations. relaxation-related activities and are

therefore likely to be looking for sustainable winter products. (Thomas &

the Biden administration's prompt response to effectively combat COVID-19

through a strong vaccine deployment, strict position on mask wearing to

prevent further spread, and giving a much-needed stimulus to the travel and

tourism industry. Gloria Guevara, President & CEO WTTC, stated, "These

efforts are essential in restarting international tourism and reviving the

American economy through the travel sector. If foreign travel is resumed by

June of this year, according to WTTC, it will provide the economy the boost

it needs to grow and restore job possibilities in the United States. The

international tourism organization also thinks that cooperation between the

public and private sectors is essential to reviving the industry. As a result of

the recent meeting with business executives, the WTTC is optimistic that the

way forward is the secure reopening of the travel and tourism industry both

Cebu's rich cultural environment, established land, sea, and an

transportation infrastructure, presence of hotels and resorts, and a growing

industrial and manufacturing economy all contribute to the island nation's

tourist industry's competitiveness. Cebu has a significant competitive

advantage over other Asian cities and the rest of the country thanks to the

Mactan Cebu International Airport's presence in Lapulapu. From the

province's major hubs of Cebu, Talisay, Mandaue, and Lapulapu, it is simple

to reach the numerous white sand beach resorts. The same applies to hotels

and other tourist attractions. However, a number of obstacles threaten to

25

stifle Cebu's tourism growth. Numerous regions of the nation as well as

neighboring Asia's tourist spots are expanding and modernizing quickly. The

tourism business in Cebu must take the lead with fiercely competitive,

higher-quality goods and services than those offered by its rivals. In order to

maintain Cebu as a top tourist destination hub in a sustainable way, the

stakeholders in the tourism industry must establish effective and strong

collaborations among the local government units (LGUS), the business

entrepreneurs, and the local communities. (Abocejo, 2016)

To ensure that advantages are maximized for local areas, a feeling of

place and identity are kept, and the visitor experience is fully enhanced, a

sustainable and people-centered approach to cultural tourism planning and

development is promoted at the interface between the global and the local.

(Melanie S., et al., 2015)

In the last few decades, international student migration for academic

objectives has dramatically expanded. In this context, increased student

mobility in higher education has been essential. This sort of student mobility

might be categorized as a new kind of tourism because it has its own

Travelarias is programmed to show the tourist destinations in the

Philippines. With this, the tourists as well as the locals can have a guide of

the best place to go when in Manila. Since Manila is the capital and prime

gateway of the Philippines, offering a program that will display different

tourist destinations around Manila will encourage more tourists. According

to Henderson (2011), the Philippines has a rich and diverse tourist attraction

which was derived from natural and cultural heritage, however not all

attractions are recognized. The main factor that affects the tourism in the

Philippines is its history of political instability. The ongoing uncertainty and

possible disturbance in our country raise questions to the future tourists. As

a result, the performance of Philippines as an international tourist destination

remains unsatisfactory compared to the other countries. As a result, in

comparison to other nations, the Philippines continues to perform poorly as a

destination for international travelers.

Tourism-related literary festival is a prospering industry around the

world. Statistics show that over the past decades, it has continuously

increased its value in tourism, marketing, and promotion of local products.

The factors contributing to the rise of tourism-related literary festivals

include technological development in communication and transportation,

immigration and urbanization, globalization, regional civil conflicts, and

integrated values (Getz, 2015). Moreover, many cities that have long been

"dull" with no economic policies to rely on have decided to take advantage

of the tourism-related literary festival as a strategy for revitalizing their

economy since this industry attracts the young population as participants and

tourists for its facilities (Getz, 2015). Despite this advantageous occurrence,

there are some adverse effects on cities that act as hosts for these events.

Firstly, the influx of visitors from other countries flocking to these festivals

puts massive pressure on their infrastructure, causing economic stress (Getz,

2015). However, having said all these negative impacts caused by increased

tourists in the city that hosts such events, there are benefits too. For example,

the city generates much-needed revenue, which can be used to improve its
