Meet Preview:

For the past four weeks the UMBC Mens Cross Country team has maintained a ranking within the Mid-Atlantic poll, and battled with the elite in the area. We have definitely made progress this year in that we are shortening the gap between us and the Top Five in the region, said Coach Gittermann. With both of these first two meets kind of being trial runs, it is going to be interesting to see what they are capable when we let them go for it. This week they travel to the Paul Short Invite where they will be competing in the Gold Race which is almost entirely comprised of Top 25 Nationally and Regionally ranked teams. The Retrievers have been led by Brandan McGee and Sam Boimov who both have recorded the fastest times for UMBC athletes ever at the Mount St. Marys Invite and Navy Invites respectively. The UMBC Womens Cross Country has been displaying a different flavor than recent years, with seven girls in the mix as opposed to a couple lead runners. Coach Gittermann revealed that once the womens team competes in the manner they have been practicing, we should be able to get the six girls after Keri across the line in ten seconds or less. So far this year Keri Wilson has led the Lady Retrievers across the line, setting personal best times for each course. She has been backed up by a rotating crew of runners, all of who appear poised to make a big jump in progress on the faster course at the Paul Short Invite. The womens team will take part in the Brown Race this weekend. This will be a good test for our women in this race. We should be aiming for top five against this competition and focusing on running personal best times in the process.

Keri Wilson
Senior Captain Leading the Way
Senior captain Keri Wilson finds herself in an unfamiliar role as the lead runner through the first two meets of the year. Its not only that she has taken over as our number one runner, but she has taken command of her racing and has been setting personal best marks each race, said Coach Gittermann. Look for her to move up the Top Ten list in the remaining races.

Picking Back Up Where He Left Off

After leading the Retrievers in all but one race last cross country season, he suffered a setback in the form a stress fracture during the winter. While he rebounded to run personal best times during the outdoor track season, he never quite regained the momentum he had going at the end of cross, said Coach Gittermann. However, by bettering his times from last year on both courses thus far, he appears to be back on the same track, and possibly be the next under twenty four minutes.
