Programming Octave Meters
with NFC (Near Field Communication)

1. The NFC can be used for programming Octave meters version 4 and up.
The Octave software version can be found on its label.

2. The NFC comes with a bracket which fixes it in the right location on the meter display. Its cable has a USB plug
which should be plugged to the PC.

3. Install the latest programming software version (currently 4.0003 b57). If you have an older version, please
contact Netafim for a current version. The programming software version is displayed on the top left of the
programming window.

4. Run the programming software. For the first time only click on Settings, tick New protocol, NFC and Auto connect
next time. Click Apply and Ok.

5. Enter the password arad1941, click Log in. If no errors are displayed go to step 6. If the Error Report at the bottom
left of the window flashes, click on it, and click on Clear All. It is likely that the communication failure is caused by
the wrong COM port. Repeat step 4 above. In the COM Port section click Refresh, then Select. Select a different
COM port, select Apply and Ok. Log in again, if necessary repeat the process.

6. The General tab – select the desired Flow Rate and Volume units, the Volume Resolution and the Mode, then click
Apply.

The available unit combinations are:

The Mode options are:

If display in megaliter
is required, select one
of the unit options with
m³ and tick the Display
x 1000 (the decimal
point of the volume
display is replaced
by a comma, the last
3 small digits are in
cubic meters, and
the large digits show
megaliters).

7. The Output Settings tab – Pulses – in the Type field select Pulses, then select the Mode, Resolution and Width for
each pulse. The selected pulse Width (length) should be within the range in the brackets to the right.

Available Types: Available Modes: Available Resolutions (m³/pulse,

meter size dependent,
1L = 0.001m³):

8. The Output Settings tab – Analog 4-20 mA – in the Type field select 4-20 mA. For the Maximum flow rate enter
the maximum expected flow rate (l/s) or Q4 of the meter converted to l/s (see below), click Apply.

The following equation can be used for the unit conversion: Q4(m³/h)/3.6 = Q4(l/s)

Example: Programming a 50mm Octave to 4-20mA output, Q4 = 50 m³/h

Q4 (l/s) = 50/3.6 = 13.889 l/s, this value should be entered in the Maximum field.

Octave Flow Simulation

1. Connect the computer to the meter using an NFC programing device. Run the programming software. For the
first time only click on Settings, tick New protocol, NFC and Auto connect next time. Click Apply and Ok.

2. Enter the password arad1941, click Log in.

3. Once logged in ensure the software version is 4.0003 b57 or later (if not contact Netafim for a software update),
then click Tool Box.

4. Click Flow Simulation, enter password sim2017, then click Log in.

5. Enter the desired flow rate (10 L/s in this example), set the simulator to ON, and click the green arrow to save the
settings. The volume in the meter display starts to flicker and accumulate simulated volume and the flow on the
display shows the entered simulated flow.

6. Close the Flow Simulation and the Tool Box windows, Click Disconnect, then select Disconnect anyway, and click
OK. The meter is now in flow simulation mode. If programmed to pulse output and pulse module is connected,
pulses are emitted according to the simulated flow. If the meter is programmed to 4-20mA and 4-20mA module
is connected, the meter emits the right current in mA proportional to the simulated flow.

7. Remember to disable the flow simulation by reconnecting to the meter, click Disconnect, ensure Exit simulation
mode and disconnect is selected and click OK. Any volume accumulated during the simulation is deleted and the
meter display shows the same values it had before the simulation.
