UNIT 1

Introduction to Construction Materials

Lesson 1
Classification of Construction Materials

Learning Outcomes
 Classify the construction materials
 Explain the uses of the construction materials

Content

Construction Materials

 Defined as the materials or products used in civil engineering structures such as

buildings, bridges, highways, railways, tunnels, dams, harbor structures, towers,
and etc.

3-Categories of Classification of Construction Materials

1. According to their phases

2. According to their chemical components
3. According to their functions

Phase Classification of Construction Materials

 Gases: air, oxygen, CO2

 Liquids: water, chemical admixtures
 Semi-solids: fresh pastes, mortars, asphalt
 Solids: metals, hardened concrete

Chemical Components Classification of Construction Materials

 Inorganic Materials
 Metal: steel, iron, aluminum, copper, various type of alloys
 Metalloid: natural stone, cement, concrete, glass, burned soil products,
etc.
 Metal-metalloid composition: reinforced concrete, etc.
 Organic Materials
 Wood, plastic, synthetic rubber, petroleum asphalt, etc.
 Composite Materials
 Inorganic Metal - Organic Composition: polymer concrete, fiberglass,
reinforced plastics, etc.
 Metal - Organic Composition: light metal sandwich panels, etc.
Function Classification of Construction Materials

 Structural Materials
 Mainly used as load-bearing members, such as the materials used for
beams, plates and columns.
 Functional Materials
 Mainly possessing some special functions in construction, such as
waterproof, ornamental and heat-insulating functions, etc.

Factors Determining the Choice of Proper Material for a Structure

 Strength, Rigidity and Durability Requirements

 Permanent loading  Creep strength
 Repeated loading  Fatique strength
 Impact loading  Toughness and resilience
 Surface loading  Hardness and resistance to abrasion
 Environmental Requirements
 Temperature change  coefficient of thermal conductivity
 Moisture movement  permeability
 Chemical effects  chemical composition
 Economy: Choose the cheaper and available materials considering,
 Initial cost, useful life, frequency of maintenance, cost of maintenance,
salvage value, and comfortability

Construction Materials’ Technical Standard

 Product standards
 standards established for products to meet some or all the requirements in
order to guarantee the applicability of products.
 generally includes product specifications, classifications, technical functions,
testing methods, rules of inspection and acceptance, packaging, storage,
transport and others.
 Construction material standards
 the technical foundations for the inspection of product quality and the
bases for the acceptance of product quality referred to by both sides of
supply and demand.

Categories of International Standards

 The “ISO’ international standards adopted in the whole world.

 The standards of the worldwide influential communities and companies, such as
the ASTM (named American Society for Testing and Materials) Standards.
 Regional Standards. They refer to the standards of industrialized countries
The Philippines Bureau of Product Standards (BPS) under Department of Trade and
Industry (DTI) formulates Philippine National Standards (PNS) for industries including
food, building and construction, electrical and electronic products, and chemical and
consumer products to adopt ASTM International standards.
