    1) In the event of a man overboard, the signal is three long blasts on the whistle or alarms. The bridge wing man overboard float should be released regardless of any other equipment thrown overboard. 2) The ship is to immediately perform a Williamson turn or quickest turn possible given traffic and sea conditions. An announcement of "man overboard" should be made over the public address system and side if known. 3) The master and engine room should be informed and the vessel prepared for rescue boat launch before the turn is completed to retrieve the person overboard when near their position.

    MAN OVERBOARD
    [To be read by all Deck Officers as part of joining familiarization.]

    THE SIGNAL IS THREE (3) LONG BLASTS ON WHISTLE / ALARMS

    01 RELEASE BRIDGE WING MAN OVERBOARD FLOAT, regardless of


    whether any other buoy has been thrown over.
    02 COMMENCE WILLIAMSON TURN, or shortest / quickest turn in the
    prevailing traffic and sea room.
    03 Give the alarm signal, as soon as possible. On public address system
    immediately announce “MAN OVERBOARD” several times, and the side, if
    known.
    04 inform MASTER AND ENGINE ROOM. 1 Vessel to be at full Manoeuvring
    status before turning is completed, so as to be able to send away boat, safely,
    when close to the MOB position
    05 Note ship’s position, wind speed and direction and time.
    06 Radio communication to be established as quickly as possible onboard and
    Emergency Squad to be instructed to PREPARE THE RESCUE BOAT. Keep
    rescue nets / pilot ladders ready for survivors to be picked up by cranes.
    07 Support Squad to provide LOOKOUTS as quickly as possible, to Monkey
    Island / bridge wings and forecastle. Forecastle Lookouts to be provided with
    communication. Binoculars to be provided to LOOKOUTS, as available.
    SEARCHLIGHTS to be used at night. Engage hand steering as soon as
    possible.
    08 Data to radio room and MAN OVERBOARD MESSAGE BROADCAST.
    Also, on VHF as soon as possible.
    09 Rescue boat to be commanded by experienced Deck Officer, (preferably Chief
    Officer, Engineer to assist with engine. Radio communication with boat to be
    maintained.

    10 First Aid Party to prepare for receiving survivor.

    NOTE 1: Action required for specific vessels to be decided by Master and Chief Engineer and
    posted in wheelhouse and ECR. To be reviewed on change of Master and/or Chief
    Engineer.
    Blankets to be put into boat before launching. Also, resuscitator, when provided.
    Sufficient boat crew to be able to attend survivor.
