Beginning of the tour. This is the Ellis Island audio guide. You are listening to our special tour for kids.
Welcome to the museum.
((Beep))
Room 1. Imagine yourself in the past. One hundred years ago, maybe in the year 1910 or in 1920. You
are a poor immigrant from Europe. Arriving in New York City, this is the first room where you arrive,
the baggage room, where you leave all your bags and your personal objects for the rest of your stay.
In those days, many immigrants were very poor, so there were very few personal belongings.
((Beep))
Room 2. This is the medical room. All the immigrants had to see a doctor. If you were sick, you could
not enter the United States. So they had a medical examination in this room.
((Beep))
Room 3. This is the legal inspection room. In those days, immigration officers interviewed all the
immigrants, sometimes through an interpreter. There were twenty nine questions to answer. For
instance: are you married? What is your occupation? How much money do you have?
((Beep))
Room 4. The immigrants who were sick could not enter the country so, first they came here, to the
detention room. It’s like a prison. After that, they returned to their country on a ship. It was a
separation for many families and it was very difficult for them.
((BEEP))
End of the tour. If all the inspections and investigations were ok, then the immigrants transferred to
New York and they were free to work, to live and to become Americans. In just fifty years, from 1880
to 1930, about twelve million immigrants arrived in the USA.

Lisa: Well, I’d definitely like to go to a place where I can take lots of nice photos. I want to post a lot
of pictures on Instagram this time, so that all our friends can follow our trip. What about you?
Jim: I’d love to swim in lakes. Even if the water is a bit cold…Run in the forest…I want to feel nature.
Lisa: Ok, ok. But I’d like to visit some cities and towns too. I want to get to know something about
Scottish people and culture too. Not just the animals in the woods!
Jim: Haha…Yeah don’t worry. I’m ok with visiting a couple of cities.
Lisa: Great. So…nature, some sport activities and city life.
Jim: Yep and we’ve got a maximum of seven days to spend. Let’s see which tour has that in the
leaflets…

This is the weather forecast. Now, let’s see what the weather will be like tomorrow. The south of the
country, near Glasgow and Edinburgh, will have nice weather. It will be sunny and the temperature
will be around seventeen degrees centigrade. In the west and in the midlands, the weather will be dry
but windy, with temperatures around ten degrees centigrade. Hikers - be careful, because there may
be thunderstorms on Ben Nevis. In the east, around Aberdeen, don’t forget your umbrella. It will be
rainy all day tomorrow, I’m afraid, and the maximum temperature will be eight degrees centigrade.
In the north of the country it will be very cold and quite cloudy. The temperature will be around seven
degrees centigrade. There is a chance of some showers and it may be snowy in the Highlands. That’s
the forecast.

Naomi: Good morning. I’ll be in Glasgow next week and I’d like to plan my visit.
Tourist Information: Of course. There are many wonderful places to visit in Glasgow. Why don’t you
go tot he Glasgow School of Art and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery. You can also
see…
Naomi: The problem is that if I stay only one day, I won’t have much time to see very
much.
Tourist Information: Ok, so you’ll have to choose carefully.
Naomi: I know, that’s why I need you help. I’d like to visit the lighthouse, the cathedral,
the botanis gardens…maybe more places. But could you tell me the opening
hours?
Tourist Information: Aha…The Botanis Gardens opens at 7am in the morning, so you can start there.
Then, if you go there early and take the subway, you’ll be able to get to the
cathedral at 10. Then you can walkt to the lighthouse because it’s really close.
Naomi: Ok, what about Kelvingrove Art Gallery or the Riverside Museum, how can I get
there? Are they worth visiting?
Tourist Information: Certainly. They’re both great places. Maybe I’d recommend after the cathedral
you take the subway to the Riverside Museum and after that you can take Bus
number 100 to Kelvingrove. That would make a very nice visit. Remember that
most museums close at 5 o’clock. So you’ll have to hurry a little.

Hey I’m Tara and I live and go to school in Dublin. I live about 20 minutes from school on the bus. I
get up at 6.45am Monday to Friday So I have an hour to get ready and leave for school. Normally,
I wake up and I look at social media on my phone for a few minutes. Ya know, check Instagram and
Snapchat. Well, I usually get up at 6.45 but today I wake up and then I fall asleep again. Ugh I wake
up at…10 past 7! So I have to run, no time for my phone! Oooh…I run downstairs to eat my breakfast.
Normally I have cereal, some fruit and coffee. But today I just have a banana. I don’t like running in
the morning and I hate starting the day with no coffee! I always have a shower and get dressed and I
usually take some time to do my hair. But today I do my hair in one minute! I get my bag and normally
leave the house at 7.45 and walk to the bus stop. But today I leave the house at 7.50 and I run to the
bus stop. I arrive just as the bus appears. Phew!
School starts at 8.40 in the morning. On Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays I have business studies.
I don’t like these classes because it’s very complicated and not fun! We learn about salaries, budgets,
finance and insurance uggghhh…My Mum always says it’s really important to know these things, but I
don’t see why. I have English avery day and Spanish is my foreign language. My Spanish classes are at
8.40 on Wednesdays and Thursdays. My best friend Sophie is in my Spanish classes. She loves writing
and she goes to a writing club after school on Wednesdays. She likes reading in Spanish too so she
knows a lot of Spanish words. Do you know how to say “dance” in Spanish?
Sophie: Yes, I do – bailar!
I study natural studies too. On Mondays I have double science and natural science class in the
morning. It starts at 5 past 11. We learn about nature and animals, we learn how we can look after
nature and the planet. I think it’s really important. Today is my favourite day because I have my
favourite subjects – art in the morning and drama in the afternoon. I also have geography at 12.30
and the teacher is really nice. Tomorrow afternoon is great too – I have PE after lunch. We finish at
3 o’clock. We play different sports. And then IT – information technology. We usually make websites
and videos on the computers. I sometimes see my friends Callum and Aidan after school. We listen
to music or play video games. Callum goes to drama club on Fridays. What time does your club start,
Callum?

Sports mad! I like surfing the net in the evenings too but I never play sports online. I go to dance
classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I do Irish dancing. We wear special shoes that make a tap, tap

Hey look, there’s a new house here. Isn’t it John and Ann’s new house?
No, it’s not their house.
Are you sure it’s not theirs?
Yes, I’m sure. There’s a car parked in front of their house, and it’s not theirs.
Oh, you may be right.

A new house.
So, this is my new house. Let’s go inside. As you can see, next to the hall, on the left, there’s a big living
room. And then, on the left of the living room there’s the kitchen, which is pretty nice. Down here on
the first floor there’s also a bathroom. But we haven’t got a basement. Let’s continue. Going upstairs,

on the second floor there’s my bedroom with a small bathroom next to it and my childrens‘ bedroom on
the right. Then, next to my bedroom there’s my office where I usually read and write in my free time.
And that’s it, I hope you like it!

Girls: Hello!
Shopkeeper: Good morning girls, can I help you?
Sheena: Yes please. We’re looking for a present for our friend, Zoe. It’s her birthday next week.
We’ve only got fifteen pounds. We’re not sure if we can find something nice.
Shopkeeper: I don’t agree. We have a lot of nice but inexpensive things for presents.
Sheena: Great
Shopkeeper: What does she like then? We’ve got comic books, we’ve got jewellery…
Tessa: No, she doesn’t like comic books and she doesn’t wear jewellery. Have you got anything
for winter sports?
Shopkeeper: Yes, of course. We’ve got sweaters, hats, gloves…
Sheena: I think this purple scarf is a good idea, she hasn’t got a scarf.Oh yes and purple is her
favourite colour.
Tessa: Yes I agree. How much is it please?
Shopkeeper: It’s £9.50.
Sheena: Oh perfect, Can you wrap it up please?
Shopkeeper: Of course…Here you are. So…£9.50 please.
Sheena: There’s ten pounds.

Ann: What is my favourite sport? I like most sports really. Except boxing, maybe. That’s probably
the only one that I don’t like. I usually like ball sports – rugby, tennis – but my favourite sport
is by far football, or soccer as they call it in America. I love the passion of football on TV. I like
watching all kinds of sports. But football has to be the number 1.
Lisa: What‘s my favourite sport? My favourite sport is skiing. But my favourite sport to watch on
TV is ice hockey. I love ice hockey. I think it’s the best sport on television today. Mmmm…but
I don’t like football at all.
Peter: My favourite sport would actually be badminton because I hate sports. I don’t like football, I
don’t like ice hockey. I just hate it when my friends always talk about sports and I don’t like
watching the games on TV at all. So I guess the only sport I like is badminton.

After more than four decades of relatively little immigration into America after it‘s founding, in the
1830s tens of thousands of immigrants began arriving on her eastern shores. Again, mainly from
Britain, Ireland and Germany. Some were attracted to the cheap farm land that was made available

by westward expansion, while others took advantage of the manufacturing boom in the cities sparked
by the industrial revolution. Before long, millions of immigrants were arriving on America’s shores.
They passed through immigration processing stations like Ellis Island in New York and Angel Island
in San Francisco Bay. This wave was much more diverse than before, coming mainly from southern
Europe it was led by Italians, Poles, Greeks, Swedes, Norwegians, Hungarians, Jews, Lebanese and
Syrians.

Jim: Hey, Lisa. Summer’s coming soon and we have to decide about our holiday.
Lisa: You’re right. I’ve got leaflets about Scotland with different tours. Let’s have a look at them.
Jim: Ok, but first tell me what you’d like to do.
Lisa: Well, I’d definitely like to go to a place where I can take lots of nice photos. I want to post a lot of
pictures on Instagram this time, so that all our friends can follow our trip.

Tourist Information: Glasgow tourist information office, what can I do for you?

Naomi: Great, thank you very much. I’ll follow your recommendations.
Tourist Information: You’re welcome. Don’t forget to visit our website for further information or, if
you have some time on Saturday, come to the tourist infotmation office and we’ll
give you leaflets and everything you might need.
Naomi: Thank you very much for your help. Bye.

Welcome on board our tour bus. On your right is the Glasgow School of Art. This impressive building is
by the famous architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. If you look, you’ll see the repair and restoration
work that is going on after a major fire in 2014. Now, if you look over to your left ((now)), you’ll see
Glasgow Cathedral, which is one of Scotland’s most magnificent medieval buildings. The cathedral
is open for visitors from 9.30 to 5.30 on Monday to Saturday and on Sundays from 1 pm to 5 pm.
Admission is free.
The very impressive building coming up in front of us is the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum,
which has a wonderful collection of Scottish and European paintings. Visitors can admire works by
Rembrandt, Gauguin, Dali and Van Gogh. And you won’t have to pay if you want to visit it, which of
course is something we like in Scotland. And if you walk just behind, you’ll find one of Glasgow’s most
beautiful parks.
