How did Mary Kom manage to get financial support for her trip to the U.S.A?

Mary Kom was not accustomed to the food there. She lost her appetite and
she lost weight. Before the finals she was only 46kg. It was the reason for her

While the teammates lost one after the other, Mary Kom went on to reach
the finals. She realized that her competitive players were not unbeatable as she had
earlier thought. This made her feel confident about the competitive players.
In China Mary Kom had to eat food with chopsticks. She found it difficult to
use two sticks to fill her stomach. At last she used both her hands to hold the
chopsticks to pick up the food and push it into her mouth.
On her return, Delhi gave her a warm welcome at the airport. In Imphal she
was greeted with garlands and drumbeats accompanied with dancing. Victory ride,
felicitation programmes and thanks giving prayers were held in Langol. She was
presented with a traditional shawl. Words of praise and adulation were showered
on her.
Mary Kom retained her world title in 2006 by defeating Steluta Duta of
Romania 22-7 at the Fourth World Championships in New Delhi. She considered
this as her greatest achievement because she was able to win at home.

Mary Kom is an Indian woman boxer. She came from a poor family. She
took interest in boxing. She pursued it with great difficulty. She was selected to
participate in the women boxing championship in USA in 2001. She was worried
about her expenditure. Her father managed to collect only Rs. 2000/- for her trip.
With the help of her friend Onler she got Rs. 8000/- from two Mp’s. With this
amount she went to us with the determination of returning back fruitfully. She
found the life at USA very harsh due to new environment. She lost her appetite and
lost her weight. She got only silver medal at the world women’s boxing in 2001.
She was given a warm welcome in India. She had good runs from 2001 to 2004.
After winning the second gold, she was offered the post of S.I by the Indian
government. She won world championship in 2004, 2005, 2006. She won many
awards. She fought her way to victory with confidence and perseverance. She was
rightly called “The Queen of Boxing” and “Magnificent Mary”.
