Around the World in 254 Days
1 Captain Donde told the six trainees that 'the sea knows no gender. 'What do you think
he meant?
Ans Captain Donde was referring to the fact that like human beings the sea does not
discriminate based on gender. Nature and its wrath affect both men and women in the
same manner. The training for such a voyage would be as rigorous for men as it was for
women.
2 Aishwarya says: 'I don't know what it would have been like if I hadn't gotten to talk to
my family daily. 'How do you think keeping in touch with her family helped her?
Ans Keeping in touch with her family must have certainly provided Aishwarya the
strength and determination required to carry on with a commendable effort and
perseverance for the crew to complete the voyage. Talking to their family every day
must have provided the women with positivity and motivation.
3 If the six women were to decide to go on a second voyage around the globe what
changes do you think they might make in their planning?
Ans The women could stock up on the type of food that they required the most. They
could also try to arrange for electricity and refrigeration, if possible, which could make
their lives easier.
4 Why does Aishwarya say 'This voyage has changed my life completely '?
Ans She was stubborn, fussy and impatient-and all those traits have gone. She would
be picky about food, but she had grown to respect everything more. Even in her
personal relationships she had grown closer to everyone around her.

Adventure is a Way of Life
1 Deeya says 'Ever since I was little, I have been 'outdoorsy ' and sporty’. What does
she mean?
Ans Deeya means that she was always interested in sports and outdoor activity.
2 Deeya says: ‘It was a difficult call that we took.’ (when they were not too far from the
summit). Why was it a difficult decision for them to take?
Ans It was a difficult call because they had decided to reach the summit together and
Ajeet' s oxygen mask had malfunctioned. They decided that Deena would continue and
her father would join later.
3 Deeya says (on reaching the summit):'It was surreal, ' Why did it seem surreal. 'Why
did it seem to be surreal to her?
Ans It seems surreal because finally they had climbed the Mount Everest. They became
India's first father- daughter duo to do so.
4 Ajeet says (on returning home):'That's the great thing about our country….' What is he
referring to?
Ans Ajeet is referring to the day they came home. When they reached their colony in
Gurgaon, they were surprised to see banners everywhere. The residents welcomed
them at the front gate. There were garlands, dholwalas and mithai. So Ajeet says
everybody joins in everybody's success and celebration.
5 How do you think the expeditions Ajeet and Deeya had been on earlier help them
when they climbed the Everest?
Ans The earlier expeditions must have helped them acclimatize to the idea of climbing
as a father-daughter duo and provided them with necessary expertize required for the
climb.
6 Deeya says: 'I' m lucky to have Dad as my partner, ' Do you agree with her? Why?
Ans Yes, Deeya was lucky to have her father as a climbing partner because he was
aware of her needs, her strengths and her limitations. Being into adventure sport
himself, her father could also give her the necessary guidance required for the climb.
7 Why is going up a mountain 'optional’, but coming down 'mandatory '?
Ans Going down is mandatory because once if you have climbed the mountain you
have to come down. When you are climbing a mountain there is always a option to quit,
but not when you are coming down.
8 Why do you think the father-and-daughter's 'bucket list' includes even more
adventures?
Ans Both Ajeet and Deeya are adventure enthusiasts and it seems like adventure runs
in their blood. Every new feat adds meaning to their life and keeps them going.
9 'Girls can do anything and reach any height if they have the support of their families. '
How is this true of Deeya?
Ans According to Deeya, her family has supported in all her endeavors. She has been
the youngest person in our planet to ski across the Greenland ice-caps which is the
second largest chunk of ice after Antarctica. Deeya 's parent have been her pillars of
support it would have been much more challenging, if her family would have been
hostile to the idea of her being into adventure sports inspite of being a girl.

and accepts challenges in life and carve their own way for others to follow.
The poet makes the reader question, are we brave enough to grow and make path for
ourselves or one among those who will follow the path.
This poem awakes an emotional response and instigates us to follow our dreams and
try new way to do things that haven't been done before.
1 According to the poet, why do most people 'follow the beaten track 'and want to 'know
the things that were known before '?
Ans: Most people follow the beaten track and want to know the things that were known
before because someone has told them it is safe. They were afraid to travel the
uncharted path because doing something new also involves the risk of failure.
2 'They blaze the path for the many ' Who does 'they' refer to?
Ans: They referred to a few adventure seekers who move forward in life without a map
or chart and don't take the beaten path
