Writing Prompt:

How have these two authors expressed their relationships with nature? After reading and
analyzing "The Calypso Borealis," an essay by John Muir, and William Wordsworth's poem, "I
Wandered Lonely as a Cloud," write an essay in which you describe how each author views
nature and answer the question. Support your discussion with evidence from the text.

I. Thesis Statement: In “The Claypso Borealis” John Muir creates vivid picture for the
readers and views nature in a positive way and he explains how he views nature
through personification, while William Wordsworth's poem uses metaphors to explain
how he views nature and how theres a connection through nature and humankind.

A. Direct quotation from the text: “I set off on the first of my long lonely excursions,
botanising in glorious freedom around the Great Lakes and wandering through
innumerable tamarac and arbor-vitae swamps, and forests of maple, basswood,
ash, elm, balsam, fir, pine, spruce, hemlock, rejoicing in their bound wealth and
strength and beauty, climbing the trees, revelling in their flowers and fruit like
bees in beds of goldenrods, glorying in the fresh cool beauty and charm of the
bog and meadow heathworts, grasses, carices, ferns, mosses, liverworts
displayed in boundless profusion.”

B. Explanation of how this quotation reveals the author’s relationship with or


view of nature: John Muir felt lonely walking home but once he seen the
beautiful trees and swamps it made him feel so much joy. Nature makes him
feel happier due to it being to relaxing and pretty.

C. Direct quotation from the text:  “I found beautiful Calypso on the mossy bank of
a stream, growing not in the ground but on a bed of yellow mosses in which its
small white bulb had found a soft nest and from which its one leaf and one flower
sprung.”
D. Explanation of how this quotation reveals the author’s relationship with or
view of nature: The beautiful flower made him feel graceful and had a positive
affect on him. He was so grateful he found the found beautiful Calypso.

II. Body Paragraph #2 Topic Sentence: William wordsworth felt a personal connection
between him and nature. Nature made him feel more alive and enjoyment. He felt
safe whenever he was around nature.

A. Direct quotation from the text: “Ten thousand saw I at a glance,


Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.”

B. Explanation of how this quotation reveals the author’s relationship with or


view of nature: The flowers brought happiness to him and felt peace around
nature.

C. Direct quotation from the text: “And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.”

D. Explanation of how this quotation reveals the author’s relationship with or


view of nature: The daffodils were so beautiful that it gave him so much joy.
He felt that nature was his therapy and made him feel calm.

III. Conclusion

A. You will write a conclusion in a later lesson and do not need to complete this
part now.
