John Muir loved the land. Born in 1838, he was a writer, a scholar, an inventor, a shepherd, a farmer, and an explorer. But above all, he was a naturalist. John Muir was particularly devoted to the high cliffs, waterfalls, and ancient giant sequoia trees that, through his careful influence, were set aside as Yosemite, one of the first national parks in America. Here is the life story of the man who, moved by a commitment to wilderness everywhere, founded the Sierra Club in 1892, a conservation group that carries on his crucial work to this day.

I wanted each cross-section to be a unique hand-drawn dissection that revealed and explained the structure of a famous building and showed how people live inside it in miniature detail. Stephen Biesty
We spend most of our lives in buildings. We make our homes in them. We go to school in them. We work in them. But why and how did people start making buildings? How did they learn to make them stronger, bigger, and more comfortable? Why did they start to decorate them in different ways? From the pyramid erected so that an Egyptian pharaoh would last forever to the dramatic, machine-like Pompidou Center designed by two young architects, Patrick Dillons stories of remarkable buildingsand the remarkable people who made themcelebrates the ingenuity of human creation. Stephen Biestys extraordinarily detailed illustrations take us inside famous buildings throughout history and demonstrate just how these marvelous structures fit together.

Magical realism, lyrical prose, and the pain and passion of human love haunt this hypnotic generational saga.
forecast for its most recent progeny, Ava Lavender. Avain all other ways a normal girlis born with the wings of a bird. In a quest to understand her peculiar disposition and a growing desire to fit in with her peers, sixteen-year old Ava ventures into the wider world, ill-prepared for what she might discover and naive to the twisted motives of others. Others like the pious Nathaniel Sorrows, who mistakes Ava for an angel and whose obsession with her grows until the night of the summer solstice celebration. That night, the skies open up, rain and feathers fill the air, and Avas quest and her familys saga build to a devastating crescendo. First-time author Leslye Walton has constructed a layered and unforgettable mythology of what it means to be born with hearts that are tragically, exquisitely human.
Leslye Walton says that The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender began as a short story that came to her while listening to a song. She has an MA in writing, and this is her first novel. Leslye Walton is a native of Tacoma, Washington, where she currently teaches high school.

The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender began as a short story that came to me while listening to the song I Just Dont Think Ill Ever Get Over You by Colin Hay. At one point in the song, he says, If I lived till I could no longer climb my stairs/I just dont think Ill ever get over you. I remember listening to these lyrics and pondering the logic, or lack thereof, in lovethe ways we coax ourselves to love, to continue loving, to leave love behind. And through this thinking arose Viviane Lavender, a girl who loved a boy for her whole life. I imagined the burden of this love, the many ways shed try to free herself from it. I imagined the heavy weight of loving someone who didnt, or perhaps couldnt, love you back and how it would define every step you took from that point on. Leslye Walton
FROM
To many, I was myth incarnate, the embodiment of a most superb legend, a fairy tale. Some considered me a monster, a mutation. To my great misfortune, I was once mistaken for an angel. To my mother, I was everything. To my father, nothing at all. To my grandmother, I was a daily reminder of loves long lost. But I knew the truthdeep down, I always did. I was just a girl. I was born Ava Wilhelmina Lavender on a remarkably clear Seattle night on the first of March in 1944. My birth was later remembered for the effect it had on the birds on the street where I lived, the auspiciously named Pinnacle Lane. During the day, as my young mother began experiencing labor pains, the crows collected mounds of tiny cherry pits in their beaks and tossed them at the house windows. Sparrows perched on womens heads and stole loose strands of hair to weave into their nests. At night nocturnal birds gathered on the lawns to eat noisily, the screams of their prey sounding much like my own mother in hard labor. Just before slipping into a deep twilight sleeprelief granted by a nurse and a cold syringemy mother opened her eyes and saw giant feathers fall from the ceiling. Their silky edges brushed her face. As soon as I was born, the nurses whisked me away from the delivery room to explore a matter that was later described on an anonymous medical report only as a slight physical abnormality. It wasnt long before the devout gathered in the light from the hospital windows, carrying candles and singing hymns in praise and fear. All because when I was born, I opened my eyes, then unfolded the pair of speckled wings that wrapped around me like a feathery cocoon. Or so the story goes. Where the wings came from, no doctor could ever determine. . . . My entire muscular, skeletal, and circulatory systems were irrevocably dependent on my wings. The option of removing them was quickly deemed out of the question. I would lose too much blood. I could end up paralyzed. Or dead. It seemed there was no separating the girl from the wings. One could not survive without the other.

Enter a fascinating, ornately drawn cityscape and help a boy find his dragon while counting objects from hot dogs to traffic lights.
In the heart of the city, among the taxis and towers, a small boy travels uptown and down, searching for his friend. Readers will certainly spot the glorious beast, plus an array of big-city icons they can count. Is the dragon taking the crosstown bus, or breathing his fiery breath below a busy street? Maybe he took a taxi to the zoo or is playing with the dogs in the park. Steve Lights masterful pen-and-ink illustrations, decorated with meticulous splashes of color, elevate this counting book (numbers 120) to new heights. Maybe the dragon is up there, too!
Steve Light is the author-illustrator of many books for children, including The Christmas Giant and Zephyr Takes Flight. He lives in New York City.

An exuberant picture book applauds the man behind the 1869 National Peace Jubilee, the largest and loudest concert the world had ever seenor heard.
When I first read about Patrick Gilmore in my neighborhood newspaper, I couldnt believe that I had never heard of him or the concert, which took place a few blocks from my home in Boston. As a former school band member, I had to find out more about this incredible event and the man behind it. Alicia Potter
As a young boy growing up in Ireland, Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore loved musicthe louder, the better! This love of music followed him to Boston in 1849, where he became a bandleader. During the brutal Civil War, it was music that kept up his spirits and those of his fellow soldiers. So when the war ended and peace was restored to the country, Patrick had an idea. He would create the biggest, boldest, loudest concert the world had ever known to celebrate. A peace jubilee! But with twelve cannons, forty church bells, one thousand musicians, and ten thousand singers, just how would all of this sound? Matt Tavaress spirited illustrations burst with sound words in perfect harmony with Alicia Potters triumphant story of the joy of music.

Jazz musician Sun Ra (19141993) always said that he came from Saturn. Being from another planet, he was naturally intrigued by everything earthlyespecially music, because music is the one thing on Earth most like the stars. Earthlings themselves confused Sun Ra, the way they sorted themselves by color and fought wars against one another. So he made music. And he traveled with other musicians and singers, calling themselves the Sun Ra Arkestra, playing, singing, and dancing for people all over the planet. Because music, he said, is what holds us all together. Join acclaimed author-illustrator Chris Raschka in celebrating a legend of the jazz world who was truly one of a kind.

Get the anchor line! Captain barks as he follows me and leaps aboard. My first orders. I stumble toward the bow, grab hold of the taut rope, and pull with everything Ive got, but the last part of the anchor line is cinched tight on the cleat by the tremendous strain of the wind. Its stuck, I yell. Captain rushes forward, a huge machete in his hand, and slashes it through the air. The line pops like a guitar string. He races back to the steering post to goose the huge twin engines, and we blast out from the dock and into the raging river. I look over my shoulder and can see my familys diner on the rising shoreline. The lights are on in the upstairs apartment, glowing like a lighthouse in the storm. Everything is there, and Im out here, in this boat, in this storm, with this nut job. He motions for me to come behind the console as the boat jumps up and down in the swells. We pass a sunken sailboat at its mooring, bobbing and lifting, showing only her tethered bow and her mast leaning over at an odd angle. Captain punches the throttle forward, and the boat rises to the top of the five-foot waves, skipping along with the back end pounding like exploding dynamite. This boat will definitely break in half. Ive seen worse! Captain screams above the engine noise, and somehow I cant imagine a worse storm, but at this moment I plan on believing everything Captain says because my life is in his hands. Where are we going? I ask, grabbing on to the console to get my balance. Strap in, he says, nodding to the metal post Im leaning against. I look down, and there is a safety harness attached to it; I fumble with the latch, strapping in just as we lift into the sky. The engines scream as the boat catapults from wave to wave. Captain stands, holding on to the steering wheel, while Im strapped to the post like a pirate lashed to the mast.

A spunky and imaginative little girl dreams of the best pet evera fuzzy baby raptor to snuggle.
Our heroine cant think of anything better than bringing home a baby raptorall teensy and tiny, fluffy and funny. It would cuddle and play, stalk birds and dust bunnies, and curl up on laps. In short, it would be the perfect pet! Readers may notice striking similarities between the raptors behavior and that of a more common house pet. But whether their first love is dinosaurs or kittens, little people with big imaginations will definitely warm to this perfect picture book.
George OConnor is the creator of several childrens books, including the New York Times best-selling Olympians series, retellings of Greek myths in comic form. About If I Had a Raptor, he says, Someone smarter than me once remarked that if your cat was a little bigger and you were a little bit smaller, it would eat you. Were happy to say that weve got something to crow about! Once again, we have been named Childrens Publisher of the Year by the U.K. Independent Publishers Guild. We won this award in 2012, and were amazed and delighted that our second year of publishing won us this accolade again. We also won the Independent Publishers Guild International Achievement Award, thanks, in no small part, to the support of the American and Canadian booksellers, librarians, reviewers, teachers, parents, and children who have embraced and enjoyed the books we love to make. Nosy Crow is gaining a reputation for our digital storytelling, having won many awards for our apps. Exploring new technologies, though, has only made us more aware of the brilliance of the printed paper or card page and what we can do with it. The simple transformation that occurs through the lifting of a flap is a source of fun in several of our titles this season. There are 121 new animals to meet in Flip Flap Farm, a rhyming split-page book illustrated by Axel Scheffler in which a couse has the top half of a cow and the bottom half of a mouse, while a hurkey is part horse and part turkey. When my own children were learning to talk, they were able to identify animals, even those theyd never encountered in real life, by pointing and making the sounds that they madeor approximations of them. (I remember with fondness my older childs rooster noise: cock-a-liddle-liddle). Can You Say It, Too? is a new series of sturdy lift-the-flap books revealing animals gloriously illustrated by Sebastien Braun, for the youngest reader to recognize and imitate. And with its huge fold-out pages, Digger Dog, written by William Bee and illustrated by Cecilia Johansson, plays with ideas of scale as a determined pooch uses ever bigger machines to get to the bone of his dreams. Axel Schefflers Pip and Posy have a new adventure in The Bedtime Frog. Posy has come to visit Pip butoh, dear!shes left her favorite toy behind. Once more, preschoolers can recognize their own feelings and explore ways of resolving the situation. And just in time for Halloween, an earlier adventure, Pip and Posy: The Scary Monster, is publishing as a board book. Leigh Hodgkinsons new picture book, Troll Swap, celebrates being different with a boisterous girl, whod rather pick her nose than a flower any day, who swaps places with an unconventional troll. Leighs artwork is also showcased in the fourth Magical Mix-up book, Spells and Surprises, which invites children to draw their own adventure. As ever, we hope you have as much fun exploring our books as weve had making them. Come and visit us at www.nosycrow.com, where we blog every weekday, or chat with us on Twitter (@nosycrow). Wed love to hear from you.

What do you get if you cross a pig with a turkey? Why, that would be a purkey! And a sheep with a rabbit? That would be a shabbit, of course! A very silly but absolutely compelling book that will charm the whole family.
Axel Scheffler was born in Hamburg, Germany. At school he was good at art, but didnt think of a career in illustration until he won a cuddly purple cow in a drawing competition. He moved to England in 1982 to learn English and to study illustration at the Bath Academy of Art. He has illustrated a number of books, including A Squash and a Squeeze, The Gruffalo, and Room on the Broom, all written by Julia Donaldson, as well as the popular Pip and Posy series. When Posy goes to stay at Pips house, they have lots of fun together before bedtime. But just as they switch out the light, disaster strikes: Posy realizes that she has forgotten her favorite frog toy. Desperate to help his distraught friend, Pip offers Posy a range of different toys to substitute for her frog, but none of them will do. It is only when Pip gives Posy his very favorite pig toy that Posy is comforted and the friends can get a good nights sleep at last. When Pip comes to Posys house wearing a scary monster mask, he gives Posy a bit of a fright! Oh, dear! But when she works out its only Pip, she feels much better, and they share the cupcakes shes made. Hooray!

Our newest titles, Tippy and the Night Parade by Lilli Carr and Hearts by Thereza Rowe, deliver just that. They are both stunning visual narratives that further the trail blazed by our best-selling A Trip to the Bottom of the World with Mouse by Frank Viva. These are gorgeous stand-alone picture books that still incorporate all the best qualities of Level One TOON titles. Vetted by a team of expert educators, these two new books enter the canon of great childrens literature. Although they are as innovative as any app, both of these lovingly produced TOON Books are also a reminder of why kids adore reading so much. They ground a generation not only in literacy but in love.

When Penelope the Fox drops her heart into the sea, shes swept off on a perilous journey, dodging sharks and royal cat-guards until a cartwheeling chicken leads her to the land of lost things. Young readers will fall in love with Thereza Rowes bold and playful designs. And as they follow Penelope (and her heart!), they will learn what is truly precious.
Thereza Rowe is a Brazilian-British artist living in London. Of this, her first book, she says that inspiration for the story came at a particularly hard time in her life: Suddenly came a wee voice saying, Whatever happens, never lose your heart. Everything is going to be just fine. Thats when I started doodling Penelope. I think of myself as a fox sitting on a cliff, and I wondered what would happen if I really lost my heart.

And in that particular year, winter blasted in early, bringing storms and ice packs that caught eight American whale ships and three hundred sailors off guard. Their ships locked in ice, with no means of escape, the whalers had limited provisions on board, and little hope of surviving until warmer temperatures arrived many months later. Here is the incredible story of three men sent by President McKinley to rescue them.
