Introduction

Stress among working adults or employees is on the rise these days. Employees are affected
by a lot of difficulties. Moreover, workplace stress has a negative impact on workers'
intellectual health, increasing their risk of anxiety, burnout, depression, and substance use
2

disorders. Workers who are overworked at paintings are much more likely to engage in risky
behaviours such as cigarette smoking, alcohol and drug abuse, and poor nutritional habits.
Aside from that, some groups have claimed that stress is a common issue in the workplace
and that no action has been taken to address it before it becomes a serious issue. Maybank
and Petronas Sabah Auxiliary Police are the two main organizations that have chosen to
study.

Summary of both journal article

According to the article of Academic of Business which has a study on Stress Management
for Maybank Holding Berhad, stress management has been divided into 5 segments.

- Work performance

- Work Stress and Work Performance

- Situational Work Control

- Work Intensification

- Work Relationship

As we know, Maybank is a well-known organization and well-performed financial company in

Malaysia. Many of us think, that financial companies will have too much stress due to
workload. Other than this, some will have a different opinion. They claimed that the bank does
not have much workload since all the information has been computerized. The reality is, that
Maybank employees are burnt out and does not satisfy with their job scope.

Fact 1:

- Work Performance:

According to the study, work performance included the relationship between employees and
employers. Employers should create a work-balanced lifestyle while they are in the office.
However, when there is no good relationship between the employer and employees, the staff
will often take leave, and the rate of absenteeism increase day by day.
3

- Other than that, when the employees feel bad about their mistakes, they will be demotivated
and work too slowly to complete the tasks.

Fact 2:

- Work Stress and Work Performance

Workplace stress has been concerning several organizations’ problems. Stress might cause
behavioural changes that influence the result of bound work. it'll correspond back to state
wherever behaviour affects performance.

- A case observe at a financial institution zone said that the principle or the excessive tendency
of having strain is because of greater time spend at their financial institution (Malta, 2004).
Research in different occupational regions indicated that an improved stage of strain is
probably to decreased activity satisfaction.

Fact 3:

- Situational Work Control

In this situation, some people can manage their stress and time while they are working.
However, some employees were unable to make it and they will mix it up with their work.

- Work management is one a crucial part that will create workers to expertise job satisfaction
and perform well because of they need authority in their own tasks that they feel snug with the
work.

Fact 4:

- Work Intensification

Working alone on totally different tasks can consume a great deal of your time as the task to
be done is far differentiated. It is necessary to focus on each individual task to complete each
one accurately but having too many tasks to complete at once will scatter focus. In fact, this
4

can condense the work performance of the employees, because their focus is not there, and
the error propensity is higher with weak concentration.

Fact 5:

- Work Relationship

According to the Maybank study, relationships at work with supervisors, colleagues, and
subordinates were identified as potential stressors. It occurs when different people have
different views on how work should be done, different personalities in handling the work, etc.
In other words, differentiation can create an uncomfortable interaction in the relationship.

Second journal article review from Petronas Sabah Auxiliary Police (PSAP) by Suzalina Binti
Rusli, the factors obtained are the intrinsic factors of work such as shift work, poor working
conditions, latest technology, duration of working hours, and repetitive work tasks are sources
of stress in the company. The second source is professional development, and the third is
interpersonal relationships at work. Subjective factors such as anxiety, depression, low self-
esteem, fatigue, and depression are the primary causes of employee stress. Speech
disturbance, forgetfulness, irritability, irritability, and abusiveness are all behavioral triggers.
Cognitive triggers include difficulty making decisions, allergies, inattention, and blank thinking.
Finally, health causes high blood pressure, lack of sleep, cardiovascular problems, headaches,
breathing difficulties, diabetes, migraines, ulcers, cancer and diarrhea.

According to a study by Flo, et al. (2009), Shift work is a main issue for the employees in
Petronas Sabah. Why does this happen?
5

1. Connected with depression, cancer, and different diseases. excluding disrupting the health
condition of a person, shift work conjointly contributes to social stress, psychological distress,
family-work conflict, and activity changes.

Other than that, the duration of the working hours makes an employee become more stressed.

1. Stress may seem once someone was asked to add on a lot of operating hours or conjointly
called over-time (OT) thanks to many reasons akin to wanting worker, tight dateline, or
perhaps loss of an unfinished task. tho' some are willing to figure more than their supposed
working hour for the sake of obtaining additional money, but their status and body condition
won't be able to wear down as time passed.

The article's suggested coping strategy is divided into two parts. The first comes from the
individual, and the second from the organizer. For the individually perspective, getting more
sleep, being more active, learning to relax, time management, communicating with others, and
avoiding an unhealthy lifestyle are all important. Reduce long working hours, provide training
in technology advancement, avoid multitasking, maintain a clear communication line,
workplace diversity, employee performance awareness, allow rest time or naps, and no
communication after working hours in the company.

The target group is the shift staff of the Auxiliary Police at Petronas' Sabah headquarters. The
sample size for this study consisted of 12 respondents. From the results obtained in this study,
the highest-scoring factor affecting work stress was the lack of communication between
colleagues and supervisors. Therefore, the paper suggested that multinational companies
should have regular one-on-one communications with employees to track or determine
employee stress levels. The limitation and recommendation will be increased in having the
sample size so that it able to obtain a better finding of the research.

Discussion

Both articles had mentioned that workplace relationship between colleague and supervisors
is crucial as it helps to reduce the miss understanding in passing down messages. It also
promotes a workplace-friendly atmosphere. The advantage in the PSAP research paper is
6

that it discussed the effects that stress will affect the employee’s mental and physical health
issue. Moreover, having sufficient rest is also essential in avoiding giving overtime work for
employees. Company should focus on practicing a work-life balance lifestyle for the
employees so that they are able to perform their work effectively and efficiently.

Conclusion

In conclusion, organizers must understand stress management in the workplace. Since a

company's productivity depends on the performance of its employees, a work environment
with clear direction and work-life balance will positively influence employees to create better
outcomes for the company and for themselves.
