General Curvilinear Motion Curvilinear Motion: Rectangular Components (x, y & z)

Curvilinear motion occurs when a particle moves along a curved path. Curvilinear motion along the path can be resolved into rectilinear motion
along the x, y, & z axes. The equation of the path is used to relate the
motion along each axis.

The position of the particle, measured from a fixed point O, will be

designated by the position vector r = r(t).
The displacement Δr represents the change in the particle’s position and is
If the particle is at point (x,y,z) on the curved path s, then its location is
determined by vector subtraction; i.e., Δr = r’ – r.
defined by the position vector.
During the time Δt, the average velocity of the particle is

At any instant the magnitude of r is defined.

The first time derivative of r yields the velocity of the particle. Hence

The acceleration of the particle is obtained by taking the first time derivative of the
equation of velocity (second time derivative of the equation of the position). We
have

A hodograph is a curved of path S that describes the locus of points for the
arrowhead of the position vector.
**Velocity is always tangent to the path and acceleration is always
tangent to the hodograph. ** .

Curvilinear Motion: Cylindrical Components (Transverse and Radial

Coordinates)
If the path of motion is expressed in polar coordinates, then the velocity and
acceleration components can be related to the time derivatives of r and θ.

To apply the time-derivative equations, it is necessary to determine

, at the instant considered. If the path is given, then the
chain rule of calculus must be used to obtain time derivatives.
Once the data are substituted into the equations, then the algebraic sign of
the results will indicate the direction of the components of v or a along each
axis.
