4th Grading – Metal Works

Teache Mark Jamil B. Castor Date June 13, 2023
r
Area Metal Works Section Grade 8 – 17,18

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, 100% of the learners should be able to achieve 85% proficiency in the following
task:

1. Identify the different parts of the welding machine.

2. To recognize the history behind the welding machine
3. Demonstrate the parts of the welding machine.

II. CONTENT: Brief History and Parts of Welding Machine

A. Content Standard
The learners demonstrate an understanding of the history and parts of welding machines.

B. Performance Standard
The Learners independently demonstrate the different uses and functions of different parts of
the welding machine.

C. Contents:

1. Brief history and parts of the welding machine.

III. LEARNING RESOURCES

1. Google Information
2. Traditional Visual Aids

IV. PROCEDURE

A. Preparation

1. Daily Routine
a. Prayer b. Greetings c. Checking of attendance
2. Review
The learners will watch videos about the history and timeline of welding.

After the video, the teacher will call a few students to give their understanding of the
video.
3. Motivation

Pick inside the box.

The teacher will ask volunteers to guess what is the name of the tools that presented, the
answer will come from the box.

Arc welding power source (welding machine)

Electrode lead cable

Electrode holder

Electrode

Cables

B. Presentation of Lesson

1. Unlocking of Difficulties
Welding - join together (metal pieces or parts) by heating the surfaces to the point of melting
using a blowtorch, electric arc, or other means, and uniting them by pressing, hammering, etc.
Arc - Arc welding is welding using the heat of an arc as a heat source. In arc welding, a positive
voltage is applied to the electrode (welding rod/wire) and a negative voltage is applied to the
base material. This makes an arc occur from the base material to the electrode.
2. Lesson Proper

2.1 Activity
The teacher will show pictures of old welding machines and new models of welding
machines and ask students about their innovation by just looking at them.

2.2 Analysis
A guide question will be presented to the class.

1. What do you think is the importance of having knowledge and parts of welding
machines?
2. How do you think this lesson help you in the future?
2.3 Abstraction
a. Presenting traditional Visual Aids – Will discuss the brief history and parts of the welding
machine.

Brief History of Welding Machine

Who invented Shielded Metal Arc Welding?
- Nikolay Slavyanov a Russian inventor who was credited with the idea of transferring
metal through an arc.
- Charles L. Coffin an American who patented the process we know today as Shielded
metal arc welding
When was SMAW introduced?
- Nikolay Slavyanov introduced Shielded Metal Arc Welding with consumable
electrodes in 1888.
Innovation of Welding Machines (SMAW)
Pictures of pioneer welding machines
-
The pictures presented are some of the first welding machine that created.
The pictures that will be presented is the new models of Shielded Metal Arc Welding machines.

The Parts of Welding Machine

- Electrode - It is the tip of the tool through which current passes from the welder to
the material that has to be welded.

- Welding machine (Power source) - An arc welding machine is a device used for
fusing metals. The machine emits an electrical arc from an electrode that melts
metal or supplies filler into a joint between two pieces of metal.

- Electrode Holder - The electrode holders are used for holding the electrodes at the
required angle. The electrode holders are of different sizes as per their ampere
ratings.

- Male Plugs - Dinse Plugs push in and twist to lock and are the most common type of
plug for fitting welding cables to welding machines.

- Switch - To turn on and off a welding machine.

- Handle - It is used to hold the welding machine.

- Ground - The grounding conductor connects the metal enclosure of the welding
machine to the ground.

How to assemble a welding machine?

1. First, plug in all the male plugs that connect the electrode holder, and the ground.
2. Plug into the power outlet.
3. Switch on the welding machine.
4. Put an Electrode on the Electrode holder.
5. Adjust the ampere to your needs.
6. Then we are ready to go.

2.4 Application: “Pick, Present, and Assemble!”

Group activity:
The teacher will direct the students to form a group of 7 and assign a leader. The leader will assign a
part of welding that they will discuss in front of the class while they’re assembling the welding machine at
the same time. Each group will be given 5 minutes to prepare and 3 minutes to present.

C. Generalization

Welding is a skill the student can improve over time so giving them an idea of what is
welding, how it works, its history of it, and parts of it can give a light to something and even
make them a welder someday. It is essential because it is part of the curriculum and giving
them this knowledge might help them in some way in the future. In short, what we are
teaching today will help students and give them idea what they want to do in future.

D. Evaluation: Modified True or False

Modified True or False: Write true if the underlined words are correct and write the correct
answer if not.

___________1. Nikolay Slavyanov a Russian inventor who was credited with the idea of
transferring plastic through an arc.
___________2. Switch - It is the tip of the tool through which current passes from the welder
to the material that has to be welded.
___________3. Nikolay Slavyanov introduced Shielded Metal Arc Welding with consumable
electrodes in 1888.
___________4. Welding machine (Power source) - An arc welding machine is a device used for
fusing metals. The machine emits fire from an electrode that melts metal or supplies filler into
a joint between two pieces of metal.
___________5. Charles L. Darwin an American who patented the process we know today as
Shielded metal arc welding

Answer keys:
1. Metal
2. Electrode
3. True
4. Electric
