Cox Architecture and Breathe Architecture are selected to study regarding my experience and career
aspirations would support their business growth.
One of the biggest multi-disciplinary architectural firms in Australasia and the globe, Cox Architecture
is an international architecture, interior design, and planning practice with a design-focused approach.
They believe “We are By the Many, For the Many”. By utilising the resourceful Australian culture to
create value through creativity, COX aims to achieve more with less. They pursue excellence by
upholding the principles of equality and opportunity. Their significant projects have their own
Prestigious honours including the World Architecture Festival Awards (National Maritime Museum of
China), the AIA National Award for Public Architecture (AAMI Park), and the AIA Public Architecture
Award (SA) have recognised Cox's creative approach (Adelaide Oval Western Grandstand).
Cox Architecture has a variety of sectors for award-winning projects: education, health, office,
residential, hotel, retail, transportation, etc. Working in a variety of sectors will enhance a graduate
career and will get exposure to different fields. There are 150-200 employees in the Melbourne office
and 201-500 employees in total in Australia and internationally. Cox works in small teams led by
multiple Project leaders/Architects and offers graduate programmes to assist in gathering relevant
work experience for architecture registration.
The key reason for inspiration is at Cox, all of their projects incorporate sustainable design, with an
emphasis on enhancing both the built and natural environments. The ecosystem and habitats of the
world are extremely important to COX. Their philosophy is to be aware of the urgent need to maintain
and restore the natural environment due to the threats to the planet's biodiversity and climate. COX
aims to make positive impacts on the built environment through its design actions and environmental
advocacy work. In 2022, they published Suitability Strategy 2022 which outlined sustainability strategy
in architectural projects. The award-winning projects to be highlighted are - Sustainable Buildings
Research Centre, Wollongong, NSW (Milo Dunphy Award for Sustainable Architecture, AIA NSW,
2015), Sir Samuel Griffith Centre Brisbane, QLD State (Award for Sustainable Architecture, AIA QLD
2015) & Geelong Civic Accommodation Project 2022 Geelong, VIC (COX’s first mass timber structure).
Another inspiring story of Director Stuart Harper, who initially joined aa s Student designer. In 2006,
Stuart joined COX as an enthusiastic 3rd-year architecture student. He gained experience through a
range of transport projects, notably North Melbourne Rail Station. In November 2022, he has become
the Director of the Cox leadership team and achieved a degree of adaptability that enables him to
effectively complete a variety of significant civic projects with both commercial consistency and design
excellence. His story and success can be a true inspiration for a graduate who is keen to excel in his
architecture career.
Getting an opportunity to work at Cox will enable any graduate to get exposure to different sectors of
architecture and adapt himself to the professional work culture and ethics. This experience will be
required for architecture registration and is important for future careers.
Working in a large-sized firm can be intimidating for architects and recent graduates as well. It is a
usual practice in large firms to have a small team of the project leader's graduates or interns who then
specialise in one specific sector. In most circumstances, it is hard to work on different projects or
specialise in another desired sector. As a result, after gaining experience in large firms, anyone wishing
to specialise or work as a project manager should seek employment in small to medium-sized
consulting firms. Breathe Architecture is Melbourne-based design practice that prioritises social,
environmental, and economic sustainability.
Breathe Architecture has arguably had the most impact on the Australian design landscape out of any
firm born of this generation. Since its foundation in 2001, its mission has always been clear – and more
than slightly ahead of its time. When it was first launched, the practice was one of just a handful of
architectural practices that were identified as sustainable. Nightingale Housing was created by
Breathe in partnership with six of Melbourne's leading architecture firms. Nightingale Housing delivers
socially, fiscally, and environmentally sustainable habitable space. The values-driven approach that
guides Breathe Architecture's hiring and general operations has resulted in projects like The Commons
a medium-density residential development in Melbourne's inner north that originated Nightingale -
which in turn has resulted in a whole new development model for Australia's property industry. The
first Breathe-designed housing project, Nightingale, was completed in Melbourne in 2014. The model
is based on eschewing the traditional development model by putting architects back in control of
financing. It uses its own learnings around social design and sustainability to deliver outcomes that are
high-performing, transparent and affordable.
There are 15-20 employees working in Breathe Architectural studio located in Brunswick and Olinda
in Melbourne. More than of the team are having worked when they were graduates and Director
Jeremy McLeod is an academic at the University of Melbourne. He runs a studio from his own practice,
so final-year students get the opportunity to work in a different environment and build relationships
with the industry. On an interesting note, the practice is mainly female-driven. Breathe mentions in
an interview that isn't on purpose; it just appears that every time they run a hiring cycle, women have
stronger applications.
Breathe believes that the aim was to always be little, a few enthusiastic young team members, are
bigger and more efficient than they anticipated. A significant advantage is a way they work as a
practice: how they come together, how everyone is very close-knit and genuinely friends. They
frequently have five, six, seven, and eight individuals working on one project at different periods and
phases, but it's really good that everyone has contributed with their own skill sets at some point.
Breathe's significant approach is to eliminate developer costs as well as architect lead as an affordable
housing provider. The funding for the successful Nightingale models was quite different initially
because they arranged funds through ethical investors or other sources. That is slowly changing as
banks become more aware of what they do and it gets a little easier. In a nutshell, they provide low-
cost homes. They sell them for whatever it costs us to construct and run the project. Architects can
work as a developer and build low-cost housing.
2. SELECTED VACANCY AND ANALYSING SKILLS
Keywords: “Responsibility to design, document and deliver a number of our large scale projects
including commercial offices, multi-residential and large format hotels.”
Analysis and Mapping: In my initial work experience at Metier3 Architects, I was initially involved in
22 level 4 Star Hotel in Little Collins Street, Melbourne. My role was in the preparation of construction
documentation for novation to a proposed D&C Contract and procurement. The estimated cost of the
project was $80M. During this project, I was also engaged in coordinating work between the client’s
representative, the hotel operator, and various consultants (Structural, Services, ESD, Quantity
Surveyor, Building Surveyor, Land Surveyor etc).
Keywords: “The role will require a person to bring experience in the delivery of large-scale buildings
and experience in systematic Revit modelling.”
Analysis and Mapping: In my 6+ years of working experience both in Metier3 and ERA Architects, I
was exposed to a complex project which gave me the chance to prove my creative and technical skills.
As my technical competence and grasp of office procedures have grown, I took the opportunity to
improve my capabilities and continue to improve manual and 3D Modelling skills in the Revit
Architecture suite. I was also heavily involved in Building Information Modelling (BIM 360)
coordination and linking architectural Revit modelling with Structural & MEP (Mechanical, Electrical &
Plumbing) and used Navisworks to do BIM detection. Additionally, my Revit teaching experience will
play an important role to facilitate Revit Training for new and current employees.
Keywords: “We are looking for someone who is passionate and who possesses an obsessive attention
to detail in all facets of the project including documentation delivery and packaging information for
coordination, tenders and construction deadlines.”
Analysis and Mapping: I had extensive exposure to preparing schematic concept design drawings and
lodging applications for town planning and building permits for various commercial projects. I was
engaged in the preparation of fee proposals, client agreement contracts, attending design meetings,
analysis of professional contractual obligations and preparation of construction documentation
packages. In ERA Architects, I was a close observer and participated in the construction of business
plans for the practice and in assessing ongoing financial planning for ERA Architects. I also gained
knowledge on practice insurance and the impact of professional negligence and ethical behaviour.
Keywords: “Experience leading documentation packages, Experience with delivering projects on site,
time management skills and ability to manage a number of projects at once through coordination and
ability to deliver deadlines”
Keywords: I played a vital leading the interior design team in the preparation of design development
packages and in the development of the Hotel brand’s “Look and Feel” book in Metier3 Architects. In
ERA Architects, I was exposed to the complexities of meeting tight timescales, as works were under
construction and the need to complete the BMW car dealership project to an agreed deadline was
paramount. Working in a small and medium-sized firm has allowed me to work on 4-5 projects
simultaneously and ability to manage a number of projects.

Wednesday 21st December 2022
Dear Peter,
I am writing to you to apply for this position with your firm. I have found the job advertisement at
LinkedIn on 14 December 2022. I believe my skill set and experience are a great match for this position.
I have always been self-driven, enthusiastic, and passionate about the creative design process. I enjoy
every bit of the design process starting from surveying sites to the final documentation stage of the
project. For me 'what I do' is a trivial issue, but the most important thing is 'am I doing well'. I am sure
my skill set and experience in commercial design (of various scales) and mixed-use development,
drafting using Revit (Advanced), and AutoCAD (Basic), ability to work on multiple projects, problem-
solving and time management skills are a great match for this job.
I got 3+ years of experience in Metier3 Architects as a Graduate B. Arch. / Revit documenter where I
was initially involved in 22 level 4 Star Hotel in Little Collins Street, Melbourne. My role was in the
preparation of construction documentation for novation to a proposed D&C Contract and
procurement. I also coordinated work between the client’s representative, the hotel operator, and
various consultants. I played an important role in leading the interior design team and draft person in
the preparation of creating a design development package and in the development of the Hotel
brand’s “Look and Feel” book with diversified projects. During my 3+ years at ERA Architects as a
Graduate B. Arch., I undertook a larger role on two commercial BMW Car dealership projects in
preparing fee proposals, client agreement contracts, attending design meetings, analysing
professional contractual obligations, and preparing construction documentation packages.
Subsequently, I managed and took lead responsibility for the fit-out of a BMW Car dealership project
in Essendon Fields. This project in particular exposure of the complexities of meeting tight timescales,
as works were under construction and the need to complete the project to the agreed deadline.
Additionally, I have been teaching at RMIT and Melbourne Polytechnic in Building Design and Civil
engineering as Building Information Modelling (BIM) Lecturer where your firm will be benefited from
Revit training for new graduates.
I welcome the opportunity to further discuss this position with you. If you have questions or would
like to schedule an interview, please contact me at 0425411025 or email [email protected].
I have enclosed my résumé for your review. I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you.
