Direct and Indirect Speech

Exercise 1:

1) My neighbour said that they were moving into a new house.


2) The captain said that if it rained, they would have to cancel the match.
3) Ashok said to his friend that they would go to the zoo.
4) Hassan said to me that he would see me the next day. I told Hassan that I was not free the next
day.
5) The teacher said that those who had written the essay could go home.

7) Ashok complained that he had been waiting for an hour.
8) My friend said that I might take his bicycle if I liked and said that he would not be needing it for
two days.
9) Dr Sapru told Mrs Rao that her husband would soon be well and asked her to let him be in bed
for a week.
10) Kassim said that he was going to Delhi on the 10 th and the interview was on the 14th.

Exercise 2:

1) Mr Rao said to his wife that he might be late for dinner and asked her not to wait for him.
2) Raju’s mother warned him not to tell lies and asked him to tell the truth.
3) The captain said to the soldiers not to fall back and ordered them to keep firing and advancing.
