ETHICAL LEADERSHIP

May 15, 2017

This Ethical leadership blog provides the information in term of definition, the difference
between the ethical leader and the unethical leader, also how to think and be an ethical leader.

There are too many different definitions of ethical leader to be defined because ethical leader can
be given meaning in different perspective. These are the example of the definition:

– “Ethical behavior is defined as behavior which is morally accepted as “good” and “right” as
opposed to “bad” or “wrong” in a given situation” (Sims, 1992).

– “ Ethical leaders speak to us about our identity, what we are and what we can become, how we
live and how we could live better” (Freeman & Stewart 2006).

– “Ethical leaders think about long-term consequences, drawbacks and benefits of the decisions
they make in the organisation” (Mihelic et al 2010).
According to Dr. Bill Grace research show the development of Ethical Leadership with the 4-V
Model which is a framework that consider beliefs and values which are internal factor and
behaviours and actions which are external factor for the common good (Kar 2014).

(Kar 2014).

 Values – Understanding and discovering own identities core value to be our uniqueness which
will implement the personal level.
 Vision – The action ability framework to others real picture.
 Voice – The process to show vision to others, convince and motivate them to action.
 Virtue – “We become what we practice” so, start do things right and good.

Also I will show the example of difference in ethical and unethical leader for everyone to
oversee and compare the different.

The Ethical Leader The Unethical Leader

Concern for the greater good Only promotes self-interest

Honest and straightforward Practices deception

Fairness Unfairly

Responsibility Blame others

Respect individually Diminishes others’ dignity

Develops and encourages others Neglects others development

(Zanderer, 1992; Mihelic et al 2010)

Now there are basic rules for every leaders who would like to be a true ethical leader
(Freeman et al 2006) to follow and adapt to your own style.
 Leader principle: leaders will be the company spokesmen who serve the benefits and
purpose of the corporation
 Constituents principle: leaders respect their co-workers individuality and freedom
 Outcome principle: leaders connect values to stakeholders and societal legitimacy.
Ethical ideals will outline company mission, vision, values and goals.
 Processes/skills principle: leaders are open to different ideas and opinions as well as
create work atmosphere.
 Situation/context principle: moral judgements are used to make ethical decisions. Ethical
leaders know the values limits.
 Ethics principle: a leader understands leadership and ethics and purposes in ethical terms.

From the evident and information that I have provided shows that it is easy to be a leader but
difficult to be an ethical leader because there are many factors need to be concern and control. So
the best way to be success to become an ethical leader is keep learning, practicing and asking
yourself the following types of questions:

1. What are my most important values and principles?

2. What would my subordinates and peers say my values are?

3. What mechanisms and processes have I designed to be sure that the people who work for me
can push back against my authority?

4. What do I want to accomplish with my leadership?

5. What do I want people to say about my leadership when I am gone?

This 60 seconds video will show you 3 simple keys to be an ethical leader. Let’s watch the short
video to understand more to be an ethical leader.

Ellen Degeneres is a woman that I concern to be an ethical leader. She is an American television
host, actress, writer, and producer. She has a own TV talk show name “The Ellen DeGeneres
Show”. The question is why I considers she to be an ethical leader because firstly, she successes
in her career with many awards from Academy Awards and Grammy Awards. Secondly, she
have a chance to joint many different organization such as the Gentle Barn which is an
organization for animal and crate American Red Cross supports the Hurricane Katrina Relief
Fund.
Personally, an ethical leader may not be the one who is the most richest or the most successes but
there show be the one who can convince and influence to people to be a better one in their way.
