MEASUREMENT OF INDUCTANCE BY OWEN'S BRID~

INTRODUCTION
.
Owen's inductance bridge measures the value of given inductance by comparison With
. . a
variable standard capacitor & resister.

GENERAL DESCRIPTIO N OF THE BOARD

(i) L 1 = Five different unknown inductance.

(ii) R 1 = Fixed Resistance of lKQ.
(iii) R2 = Variable Resistance (Ten Round Pot of Resistance of 10000).
(iv) R3 = Fixed Resistance of IKn.
(v) C2 = Decade dial X 0.1 µF (Standard Known Capacitance).
(vi) C4 = Fixed Capacitor of 0.1 µF.
(vii) Variable AC Supply.
(viii) Digital Multimeter (Null Detector).
(ix) Indicating light
(x) Toggle Switch
(xi) Patch Cords
(xii) Fuse Protection.

AC SOURCE

The bij.dge consists of sine wave signal of 1 KHz. The amplitude of AC signal can be
varied 0-8 Volt which is sufficient to carried out the measurement. an on-off switch with
indicating light is providing on the board. Two sockets are provided for output of AC signal
detector.

DETECTOR

To find out balance condition an electronic null detector (multi meter) is additionally
provided with bridge.

COMPONEN T USED

• Five unknown inductors are provided on the board, which is indicated by L 1 which value
change by rotary switch.

• Standard variable capacitors are provided on the board, which is indicated by C2 which
value change by rotary switch.

• A variable resistance (ten round pot R2) of 1OOOQ is also provided on board.

• R1 =lK fixed resistance is connected series with L 1 as shown in circuit diagram figl •

• R3 = I k fixed resistance

• C4Fixed capacitor of 0.1 µF.

• A circuit diagram made on board, similarly we will make on board which is placed
on
board.

THEORY

AC bridge method is outstanding importance for measurement of electrical quantitie

s
(resistance, inductance & capacitance etc.):-

Measurement of inductance, capacitance, storage factor and loss factor may be made
accurately by employing AC bridge network. AC bridge is nothing but modification
of wheat
stone bridge. AC bridge 1n its basic form consist of four ARM source of excitation

and determinable with accuracy. The wave form is much closed to sign wave and their p

output is sufficient for most bridges.

Null detector.

GENERAL EOUATION FOR BRIDGE BALANCE

Fig. (2) shows a basic AC bridge. The four arms of the bridge are impedance Zl , Z2, 23&
Z4.
The condition for balance of bridge requires that there should be no current through the
detector. This requires the potential difference between points B & C should be zero. This will be
the case when voltage drop from A to B be equal to voltage drop from A to C, both in magnitude
& phase. In complex notation we can, thus, write :

------1,...., liE_______.

by separating imaginary part of equation (6)

PROCEDURE

1. First make the circuit on board using resisters, inductors, capacitor & patch cord same
as
shown in board.

2. Keep the AC supply at zero magnitude by rotating to knob fully anticlock wise direction.

3. Switch ON the power supply to the board.

4. Give some AC signal with the help of amplitude knob so that the reading in the null
detector (Multimeter) is not over flow.

5. Keep the unknown inductor at any value out of five.

6. Now adjust the resistance R3 & pots resistance (R2) so that a minimum reading is obtained
in the null detector.

7. Switch OFF the power supply and disconnect all the connections made on
e 0ard
without disturbing the resistance R2, & capacitor C2.
8. Measure the resistance R2 with the help of digital multimeter.
9. Record the observation as
R2= ......... . Ohm
R3= ......... . Ohm
I 0. Calculate Unknown inductor (1 1) using fallowing formuia
L1 = (R2R3C4)
11. Repeat the above steps for calculating other value of unknown inductor.
