INTRODUCTION
It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and
knowledge – Albert Einstein.
Practice teaching is an important component towards becoming a teacher
It provides experiences to student teachers in the actual teaching and learning
environment. During teaching practice, a student – teacher is given the teaching
profession. Student – teachers also know the value of teaching practice and they
perceive it as the important aspect of their preparation for the teaching profession
since it provides for the real interface between student hood and membership of
the profession (Rakesh Ranjan, 2013). Teachers in a society are thought to be agents
of change as they are central to the delivery of quality education. Quality teachers
are the greatest determinant of student achievement and their impact are greater
than any other social factors, including class size, parent education, and income
and language background (NCTAF, 1997). Teachers play an important role in shaping
the future of individuals as well as of entire generations. They can also influence the
economic dynamism of the country by imparting skills that translate into innovation
and productivity in workplace (Goldhaber and Anthony, 2004) . Because of the
current changing and challenging world, teachers should be provided with a
range of skills, knowledge, attitudes and relevant educational experience that
enable them to cope with the challenge. The teachers character and quality and

its contribution to national development (Kumar and Ratnalikar, 2004). Because of
the current changing and challenging world, teachers should be provided with
a range of skills, knowledge, attitudes and relevant educational experience that
enable them to cope up with the challenge. The teachers character and quality
competence are the most significant factors which influence the education quality
and its contribution to national development (Kumar and Ratnalikar, 2005).
This means that if classroom learning is to be effective, teachers must well be
trained and should be ready to assume their professional responsibility. The teachers
training program aimed at developing better teaching skills among student teachers.
Student teachers in field – based programs have the opportunity to use their teaching
practice experiences to regularly apply pedagogical theory and course learning to
develop as a skillful, knowledgeable and reflective teacher (Bell, 2004). The provision
of education has undergone several changes that aim at improving its quality. One
obvious move is the improvement of the teaching process to reflect new needs of
society. In our context this involved improving teacher training and introduction of
competence – based education approaches (Mkonongwa, 2012). It has been noted
that teaching sector (example secondary teacher education) does not attract
academically able and professionally motivated students towards teaching carrier.
The government has been encouraging many universities to offer teacher training
programs which its implementation seem to work properly. However, the problem of

teaching practice for undergraduate students’ teachers has not been studied. This
workbook highlighted the need for teacher preparation to support new teacher
inquiry to help teacher candidates use problem solving approaches when they face
the day – to – day challenges in a classroom. A study by Brouwer and Korthagen
(2005) confirmed the role of the practicum in the overall development of competent
teachers. While both classroom theory and practicum experiences were found to be
contributors to a new teacher’s development, the practicum in a school context was
more influential than the course components of the teacher education program on
the development of teaching competence.
Education is expected to play several key roles in an effort of developing
country socio – economic and cultural status. However, it is impossible to think of
quality education without having academically qualifies and professionally
responsible teachers on the schools. Thus, for teachers to play their role effectively in
schools there must be a well – designed and successfully implemented teaching
practice program for student teachers that aims at producing teachers who are
academically qualified, professionally skilled, and attitudinally and ethically
committed to their profession.

My Personal Educational Philosophy
My educational philosophy is I believe that all students are capable of learning.
They all do not learn at the same rate, but with different methods and strategies it is
possible. Students should not be thought of as mindless individuals just waiting to
be filled with knowledge by their teacher.
An education is not solely academic; the teacher must also educate her
students mentally by teaching them the skills needed to solve problems and socially
by teaching them the skills needed to communicate and work productively with
others. Students must be able to function in the real world which not only requires
academic knowledge but social skills as well. I believe teachers should not be alone in
educating students but that parents, families and communities need to work together
to support and enrich the lives of their children, who are the future.
Teachers need to use various methods / approaches in order to reach every
student. I believe teachers who only use one method to teach should not be in the
classroom. They obviously are not reaching all of their students because we know
that not all students learn in the same way. Teachers must reach visual learners,
auditory learners and kinesthetic learner. I plan on using several different methods
of teaching, including hands on, technology based, cooperative learning groups and
group discussion.

The Rationale, Nature and Scope of Student Teaching
Student Teaching is designed as an opportunity to put the knowledge and
skills gained during the teacher education program into practice in a middle or high
school classroom, as well as to expand that knowledge through practical experience
working with students. Student Teachers must make decision about what they will
teach and how they will then teach it, decisions that will achieve their purposes and
address their students' needs. The value of developing a rationale is that it provides a
framework for this planning.
Student teaching is 6 – unit course to be finished in one semester. It covers
three phases namely; orientation, off – campus, period of evaluation of the
preparation of your narrative report. During the seminar, you will find answers to
your questions about: which school you will be assigned? What is demonstration
teaching? How will you handle the discipline of the pupils and other questions
relation to the teaching of other subjects?
The evaluation period is observed after the off – campus assignment when you
report back to UA to work on your narrative report that includes the summary of
your work experience with the school children, school personnel and the community.

Objective of Practice Teaching
Teaching is the most stable profession in the Philippines. Like other profession
it requires an extended period of specialized pre – service preparation and passing the
Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) in order to be qualified in teaching career.
Student Teaching then, is the culmination of this pre – service training. It’s major
objectives are the following:
1. Provide opportunities for student teachers to apply in actual classroom
situations the theories and principles learned in the teaching – learning
processes;
2. Give the opportunities for prospective teachers to evaluate themselves and
discover their weaknesses in certain phases of their teaching tasks;
3. Gain comprehensive and realistic picture of the instructional system which
prospective teacher will be a part;
4. Develop their competence and desirable attitude needed by a teacher in order
to function effectively in the classroom and ;
5. Understand problems of actual teaching and develop the skill to make the
necessary adjustment to the changing classroom conditions.

Duties and Responsibilities of a Student Teacher
The General Education Program of the Institution and the professional subjects
are provided to give prospective teachers insights into the sociological, philosophical,
and anthropological foundation of Education, the curriculum, methods of teaching,
preparation and utilization of instructional resources, techniques of evaluation and
the professional responsibilities of the school personnel. The following are the duties
and responsibilities of the student teacher;
1. Set clear objectives.
Competent teachers set specific objectives for each learning experience.
The daily lesson plan, unit of study can contribute to the achievement of goals,
objectives and purposes.
2. Study individual and class needs.
The student teachers identifies the objectives and bases of these
objectives on the specific needs, abilities and achievement of the pupils with
whom he is working.
3. Study the community.

Knowledge about the people in the community helps the student teacher
gain understanding of children and the behavior they show in the classroom.

4. Provide a balance program.
A student teacher should refer to the Teacher’s Guide, Teacher’s
Manual, Course of Study, and other Curriculum Materials.
5. Make effective plan.
Good planning involves the identification of goals, objectives, or
purpose; knowledge of children and the community and considers
suggestion from curriculum Guides and Teachers Manual.
6. Make content meaningful.
A thorough knowledge of the subject matter and use of effective
method for developing both the meaning and significance of what
is being taught is the duty of the student teacher.
7. Provide for individual and group work.
Individual work is provided to measure that specific needs of each
learner are met. Group work is provided when common needs and
purposes of the entire class or the group within the class are
to be met.
8. Provide good environment for learning.
It is the duty of the student teacher to make the best of what is
available in the environment and make it comfortable and
conducive to learning.

9. Use appropriate methods and instructional materials
The student teacher should apply his or her skills in selecting the
effective method and appropriate instructional in order to attain the
objectives of the lesson.
10. Evaluate from the beginning to the end
Appraisal of children’s learning and the value of the various
methods and instructional materials should be done to ensure
quality teaching and learning.
11. Maintain professional relationship
Relationship with co-workers, pupils, parents, the community and
the profession are clearly outlined in the Code of Ethics for school
personnel.

My Alma Mater
University of Antique is a state university in Antique founded 1954. The
passage of time has become a witness to the challenges the school has met from its
foundation as ASAT; its growth as PSCA; and its maturity as UA. The University of
Antique is a living proof of a journey from a humble beginning to a dynamic and
illustrious future. With its unrelenting effort to provide quality education and to
improve its services to its clientele, University of Antique plays an indispensable role
in the progress of the province and undoubtedly remains as Antique’s pride.
Teacher Education courses offered at University of Antique: the bachelor’s
courses were Bachelor of Elementary Education {BEED) and Bachelor of Secondary
Education (BSED). The school also offered a new program for those who want to
become a teacher a Teacher in Teaching (CIT) and proceed to Diploma in Teaching
(DIT).

Brief History of the School
ANTIQUE NATIONAL SCHOOL- NIGHT SECONDARY
Secondary education in the province of Antique started in 1906 when eleven
elementary school graduates petitioned to the Secretary of Public Instructions for the
opening of a high school in San Jose, capital town of the province.
The Secretary promised the amount of P30, 000.00 and appealed to Antiqueños
to put up a counterpart of P15, 000.00. The amount was easily raised through the
leadership of Gov. Angel Salazar Sr., so in June 190, secondary education started
with the first-year class and the school was called Antique Provincial High School.
The eleven petitioners were Silverio Nietes, Amador Nietes, Segundo Moscoso, Pedro
Vego, Pedro Elizalde, Severo Encarnacion, Jose Natividad, Eusebio Tureccha,
Demetrio Tejares, Jose Fullon and Angel Capadocia who later became leaders in their
chosen vocation.
All teachers were Americans. The subjects taught were Literature and
Composition, Algebra, Geometry, Botany, Geology, Methods of Teaching, Philippine
History and Gardening. The second year was opened in1908. The third year was
added in 1918- and the school was changed to Antique High School. The following
school year, the high school course was completed with the opening of the fourth
year. Class 1920 was therefore the first graduating class of the AHS.

The first graduating students were Paz Hiero (Valedictorian), Delfin Nava
(Salutatorian), Junny Occeña, Ambrosio Galera (President), Juan Tordesillas, Manuel
Girado, Bonifacio Bangcaya Sr., Santiago Dalumpines, Julian Huera, Perfecto
Macanas, Basilio Pallon, Isidro Rubite, Manuel Tating, Benigno Vengano and Luis
Palma. Up until 1927, the high school site was in the lot where now stands the
Delegate Angel Salazar, Jr. Memorial School (DASJMS). The ANS was transferred to
its present site in 1927 and class 1928 was the first to graduate from this site.
World War II broke out and reached the Philippines in 1941. AHS was
closed for more than three years and was reopened on August 1945, when students
came back to finish the curriculum year they left of when the war broke out.
ANS is the only educational institution in Antique that offers “Night Secondary
Education”, catering to students who work in the daytime but wish to finish high
school. The school began implementing the Special Science Curriculum in 1973. It is
an enhanced curriculum in the sense that it has more Science subjects and more
units for Math as compared to the regular curriculum.

In 1976, the tertiary level was opened. It offered following courses: Junior
Secretarial, Associate in Agriculture and Associate in Arts. It was abolished in 2003
by virtue of a law requiring all post-secondary courses to be under the Commission
on Higher Education.

PENALTY
Violations of item B 1-2 have to be dealt outright separation from school as
determined by the committee on discipline. Items B 3-7, 1st offense- warning and call
attention of parents, 2nd offense-suspension from school of not less than 15 school
days determined by the committee on discipline, 3rd offense-separation from school.

Other minor offenses such as shouting/ loitering on the corridor,
disrupting classes, scattering rubbish, wearing ID of others, picking of fruits and
flowers from plants in the campus, wearing of earrings, very long and untidy hair (for
boys) and tattoos, in addition to items A- 1-6, 1st offense- warning and call attention

of parents, 2nd offense- suspension of at least 5 school days as determined by the
committee on discipline, 3rd offense-suspension of a least 15 days and 4th offense-

Significance Days of my Practice Teaching

Together with my 14 classmates, we attended our first meet and greet through virtual
