Volleyball is a mass-based and competitive sport and ranks among the leading team sports of the world. The
game is suitable to all ages; young and old alike and finds much satisfaction and enjoyment in volleying the ball back and
forth across the net. The game is now played in playgrounds, parks, streets, gymnasiums, the backyard, and on the
beach.
Volleyball is a type of games offer many opportunities for school age child, to develop better coordination, over
all physical and mental development and team play.
Volleyball is a sport played by 2 teams on a playing court divided by a net. The objective of the game is to score
points in the course of hitting the ball with the hands to volley the ball back and forth over a net, in such a way that the
opponent cannot return it. The team has 3 hits for returning the ball. The ball is put in play within Service; hit by the
server over the net by the opponent. The rally continues until the ball is grounded on the playing court, goes “OUT” or a
team fails to return it properly.
In a volleyball team, the team winning a rally scores a point. (Rally Point System). When the receiving team wins
a rally, it gains a point and the right to serve, and its player rotate one position clockwise.
WILLIAM J. MORGAN YMCA Physical Education Director in Holyoke Massachusetts, USA, originated volleyball, a
net game in 1895. Originally, the game was called “MINTONETTE”, a game that was played by batting a ball with long
handled racket over a net-strung seven feet high. He combined the features of tennis with a ball of the basketball type.
The name of the game was derived from the word “VOLLEY” which is a term used in tennis meaning, to hit the ball on
the fly”.
Dr. Morgan explained that the new game, then called “mintonette”, was designed for the gymnasium or exercise
hall but might also played outdoors. Any number of persons could play.It was ALFRED F. HALSTED suggested That the
name “VOLLEYBALL” be used.
Volleyball, an international game, is played in many countries and included in most programs of schools, and colleges,
recreation centers, and playgrounds. The Philippine Amateur Federation adopted volleyball for men as an official event in
the National Championship in 1912. In 1913 just one Year later, when the Far Eastern Games were held in Manila, the
Philippines won the championship games. Women and girls soon began playing volleyball and in 1924, at the first
national tournament, the Philippine Normal School was the champion team. It is the most popular in the barrios, towns
and cities. The favorable climate makes it possible to play outdoors much of the year. The game does not require
expensive equipment and it can be played by few or many in a team.

body segments.
MOTOR DEVELOPMENT
The over-all body coordination will be developed to master the many different skills.
PSYCHOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT
A player must learn self-discipline. It takes a high degree of self-discipline for a skilled player to “Study at Home”. A player
learns a high degree of personal responsibility toward their teammates. Personal integrity and regard for rules are traits
that are strengthened as players learns to observe the rules, policies and regulations of the game.
SOCIOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT
Volleyball game is an excellent activity for both sexes, a recreational activity for relaxation to utilize wisely our leisure
time. It promotes and increased socialization by teammates both on and off the court. Many lasting friendships,
exchanging ideas and pleasantries with co-player lends itself especially well to this type of social activity.
FUTURE EMPHASIS
1. Experienced player of any age should make themselves available for clinics, teaching demonstration and
exhibitions.
1. COURT
a. All lines are 5cm. Wide. They must be of light and different color from the floor and any other lines.
b. Boundary lines – two side and two end lines mark the playing courts measuring 9x9 m. each. This line extends
beneath the net from one side to the other sideline.
A. Front Zone – each from the zone is limited by the axis of the centerline, and attack line is drawn 3 meters back from
the axis. The front zone is considered to extend indefinitely beyond the sidelines.
B. Front Zone – each from the zone is limited by the axis of the centerline, and attack line is drawn 3 meters back from

C. Substitution Zone – this is limited by ordinary line or extension of both attack lines up to the scorer’s table.
D. Free Zone – this is the area, which is an extension of the side lines of 3-8 meters.
3. NET
The net is 9.5 meters long and 1 meter wide when it is hung taut and place vertically over the axis of the centerline. At its
top, there is the horizontal band, 5 cm. wide, made 3 of a two-fold white canvas and sewed 12 cm. along its full length.
Each extreme end of the band to the post keeps the top of the net taut. Within the band, there is a flexible cable for
fastening the net to the post and keeping its top taut.
a. SIDE BANDS
There are two white bands 5 cm. wide fastened vertically to the net and placed above each sideline. They are considered
as part of the net.
4. ANTENNAE
An antenna is flexible rope, 1.8 m. long and 50 mm. in diameter. It is made of fiber glass of similar material. Two
antennae are fastened at the outer edges of the side band and placed on the opposite side of the net. The top 80 cm. of
each antenna, above the net is marked by 100 cm. strips of contrasting colors, preferably red and white. The antennae
are considered parts of the net and laterally delimit the crossing space. The following are the measurements of the net.
5. POSTS
a. The posts supporting the net must be rounded and smooth with a height of 2.55 m. They must be preferably
being adjustable.
b. The posts must be fixed on the ground at a distance of 0.5 m. from each side lines.
6. BALL
The ball should be white leather, 65 to 67 cm. in circumference and 260-380 grams in weight, with the air pressure inside
of 45 grams.
