Equipment
The difference between the M23 and the M24 casing cutters is the number of knives. The M23 model
has three knives; the M24 model has four. The four-knife arrangement introduces a different knife pin
pattern and method of holding the pins in place. Otherwise, the internal parts of the M23 and M24 are
the same, and both models follow the same basic design and operation principal as all Weatherford
casing cutters.
The cross-section drawings and parts list illustrate and identify all internal parts of the M23 and M24
casing cutters.
Assembly
The only difference between assembly of the M24 and assembly of the M23 casing cutter concerns the
knife pin arrangement for accommodating the fourth knife. To reinstall the knives, reverse the knife
installation procedure.
Note: If knives are being replaced for running back in the hole, always install each new knife in the first
open slot, with the knife pin partially in place, before removing or replacing the other knives. One-by-
one installation eliminates the need for prying down the knife rest bushing to slip in the knife heel
between it and the piston. Gather all listed parts.
1. Inspect all threads and sealing surfaces to ensure that all parts are free of damage, paying special
attention to areas near sealing members.
2. Repair or replace parts as required.
3. Use anti-galling compound on all threads and down hole grease on all O-rings. Heavily grease all
internal parts. Avoid damage to parts by using a soft jaw vise and strap wrenches to tighten
connections.
4. Set the tool body upright, and drop in the knife rest spring.
5. Use the hooked rod to set the knife rest bushing into place.
6. Install the piston assembly. (Refer to the Piston Bore Tolerances chart.) Push down the piston
assembly only far enough to permit threads on the indicator spider to engage.
7. Allow make-up of the indicator spider to push down the piston.
8. Use the indicator wrench to run down the indicator spider until the indicator spider shoulders.
Disassembly
Proper cleaning is very important and should be done as soon as possible after each use of the tool.
The entire unit, including internal working parts, is exposed to saltwater and drilling fluid chemicals.
Disassembly is simple: The indicator assembly holds in all internal parts. Knives must be removed to
allow removal of the knife rest bushing.
1. Remove the knives.
a. Set the tool upright, and remove the socket head cap screw.
b. Remove the knife pin retainer key.

Operation
Typical operating parameters dictate rotary speeds starting at 40 rpm and working up to smooth torque
outputs, usually not exceeding 130 rpm. Pressure requirements seldom exceed 1,000 psi; and, except
under extremely unusual conditions, cuts should be made with no more than 400 to 600 psi across the
tool. Minimal fluid is required, as the cutter is equipped with a small orifice, located in the indicator
assembly, which expands when the tattletale indicator functions. Weatherford strongly recommends
use of seawater for circulating fluid to avoid damage to internal parts. If drilling mud must be used, it
should be as free of abrasives as possible.

Third run:
1. Dress the 12-in. OD Weatherford M23 or M24 Casing Cutter with the appropriate knives,
approximately 22 1/2-in.
2. Remove the 8-in. spacer sub in place.
3. Proceed as for previous cuts. With longer knives, more pump pressure will be required, and
considerably more rotating time will be necessary before the knives reach the indication point. More
of the 13 3/8- and 20-in. casing must be milled away than on the previous run.

Spacer Subs
The following example illustrates the importance of using the prescribed knife sizes when running
spacer subs, regardless of sequence of run:
• The plan is to cut and remove the 13 3/8-in. casing and to cut both 20- and 30-in. casing while, at
the same time, landing the marine swivel, dressed with 20 1/4- or 30 1/2-in. support plate, on top of
20-in. housing.
• Cut the 13 3/8-in. casing low enough to avoid the need for stabbing the lower end of the tool into
the 13 3/8-in. casing left in the hole.
• Proceed by installing appropriate knives. Install 8- and 10-in. spacer sub in the string between the
swivel and the cutter.
• If the first attempted cut of both strings is unsuccessful, use the original pattern (13.74-in. knives
with 8- spacer sub) for cutting 20-in. casing; then rerun the 19.74-in. knives spacer sub for
completing the 30-in. casing cut.
If 13 3/8- and 20-in. casings are to be cut and removed before cutting the 30-in. casing, the smaller-size
casings should be cut 8 to 10 ft below the planned cutting point for the 30-in. casing. This allowance
provides ample room for a tool with longer knives to operate above 13 3/8- and 20-in. casing left in the
hole and to allow for spacing lost when landing the marine swivel at the lower point on top of 30–in.
housing.
