Malaysia is a multi-

racial country that lives in peace and harmony. The three main races in

Malaysia are the Malays , Chinese and Indians . Malays are the largest race making up 54%
of Malaysia's population. Malays are a people who are Muslim, speak Malay and practice
Malay culture. The Malays have an important influence in the political arena in
Malaysia. Chinese represent 25% of the Malaysian population and live in the big cities on the
west coast of the peninsula. Most Chinese are Buddhist , Taoist or Christian ,
speak Mandarin , Hokkien, Hakka , Cantonese or Teochew and more dominant in the
economic field. Indians make up 7.5% of the population. Most are Hindus ,
speak Tamil , Malayalam , and Hindi . In addition, there are also
Sikhs , Serani or Eurasians and other bumiputeras. Malay is the official language of
Malaysia, but English is used for business.
The largest Bumiputera tribe in Sarawak is the Iban with 600,000 people. They live in
longhouses, and settle along the Rajang and Lupar Rivers. 170,000 Bidayuh people live in the
southwest of Sarawak. Orang Asli (140,000) live in Peninsular Malaysia. In the past they
were forest produce gatherers, nomadic, and cultivated, but now they have been absorbed into
modern Malaysian life. However, they remain the ethnic group with the lowest income
compared to other ethnic groups. This is likely due to the economic systemthose who do not
depend on cash, for example food and houses are partly produced from forest products
without having to be bought. However, the government offers equal educational opportunities
and some of them now hold professional positions such as doctors .
Malaysian music includes traditional and contemporary music played by
Malaysians. Traditional music is heavily influenced by Chinese, Islamic, Indian and
Indonesian cultures. Most musical instruments consist of drums , flutes , gongs and so
on. The country has a strong tradition in dance, some originating from Thai , Indian ,
and Portuguese . In addition, there are also wayang kulit , silat , and craft items such as batik,
embroidery, and silver and copper items.
Like its people, food in Malaysia is diverse, from heavy food such as nasi lemak to light food
such as kuih . The Malaysian government has taken steps to define Malaysian Culture
through the "1971 National Cultural Policy", which defines what is considered official
culture, basing it on Malay culture and integrating Islamic influences. This highly influenced
language; only Malay texts are considered official cultural texts. Government control over the
media is strong, and most media outlets are linked to the government in some way.
