1. What is Bye? What is the method of fixing Byes?

Bye: Bye is a privilege given to a team by drawing lots exempting it from playing a match in the first
round. While drawing the fixture for teams competing if the number of teams is power of two i.e. 22
23 24 25 or 2 4 8 16 32 in that case Bye shall not be given. Another case: When number of teams
competing is not the power of two i.e. 5 6 7 9 10 11 12 13 17 33 etc. Byes have to be given to a
specific number of teams or players. A team which is given a bye will not play in the first
round. Method of fixing byes: a On a plain sheet write total number of teams participating. b Then
lots are drawn. c First Bye shall be awarded to last team of the lower half. d IInd bye to the Is team
of upper half. e IIIrd bye to the upper most team of lower half.f IVth bye to the lower most team of
upper half. g The rest are awarded in the same order.

2. What is the function of management in physical education?


Planning: Planning is the primary function of management. It involves determination of a
course of action to achieve desired results/objectives. Planning is the starting point of
management process and all other functions of management are related to and
dependent on planning function.

advantages and disadvantages.

Tournament: A series of sports competitions, in which, a team finally wins and rest of the participating
teams lose the matches. It depends on various factors i.e... - No. of participating teams, availability of
grounds and equipment, No. of days and funds. Importance of tournaments are - Source of Recreation;
A large number of people go to watch various games and sports for getting recreation. Sports
tournaments provide ample recreation to the spectators. Development of Social Qualities: Social
qualities such as cooperation, tolerance, sympathy, group cohesion, brotherhood and discipline are
developed among participants through sports tournaments. Importance of tournament  The sportsman
learns the discipline by playing tournaments.  The sportsman meets other sportsman at a single
platform.  He learns ethical values such as honesty, fair play, respect for others.  Tournaments
provides recreation to all, i.e... organizers, spectators, students.
Type of tournament: Knock out: In this type of tournament, the team once defeated, gets eliminated
from the tournament. Only the winning teams contest in the next rounds. Opportunities are given to the
winning players/teams. League: In single league tournament all participating teams compete once, with
each other, where as in double league, each team plays with every as in double league, each team plays
with every other team twice, without any consideration of victory or defeat. Combination Tournaments:
Combination tournaments are organized in group or zonal matches. Whenever there is a large number
of teams, combination tournaments facilitate the Physical Education Teachers, job. It gives them elbow
room to try out new experiments.
There are mainly four types of combination tournaments:
1. Knock out cum Knock out
2. League cum league
3. Knock out cum league
4. League cum Knock out
5. Draw a flowchart showing different organising
committees.

Pre tournament responsibility: proper designing of the fixture is the main


responsibility. In addition to this they should also look after the staying and the
practicing opportunity of the the players.
during tournament responsibility : maintenance of time and the strict rules
of the game should be enhanced. The sportsman spirit should also be
maintained as far as possible.
post tournament responsibility: the mean utilisation is the price distribution
of the the athlete. In addition to this The other athlete who could not perform
properly should be boosted up to enhance their performance in the next
tournament

Importance of intramural and extramural Competitions:


(a) To provide opportunities to the students at the institution to develop and display their skills in
various physical education activities.
(b) To provide opportunities to the students for fun, enjoyment and to develop fellowship
participation in sports competitions.
(c) To provide opportunities to develop leadership and fellowership qualities.
(d) To provide opportunity to students to release tension, depression and aggression.
(e) To provide a feeling of achievement through sports participation which leads to mental and
emotional health.
(f) To provide students ample opportunities to develop their physical, mental, emotional and
social health through participation in activities.
(g) Players are benefitted by getting organizing and administrative experience of conducting
intramural and extramural competitions.
(h) To provide opportunities to the players of various teams to have exposure to the competition.
(i) To provide opportunities to all the students of the same institution or other institutions to join
a common platform and socialize.
(j) It teaches the participants to respect the game, officials, opponents, spectators and accept
victory or defeat with grace.
