FU-M1-CU1 Orientation, Nursing as a Profession

Week 1 Unit Task: Lec

Study Questions
• What is the most significant change in the nursing history that greatly affected our profession to
present? Provide examples and present the timeline.

- The most significant changes in nursing is the way they implemented and developed from treating
nursing as a low profession to where you hire prostitutes, or criminals, to hiring trained professionals
to develop a certain knowledge on how to take care of a human being as a whole and not just treated
as a low quality profession. Other than that we had evolved to an age where technology can prolong
our lives, unlike back then where we can only live in a certain period of life, now we can extend our
lives through the technology or the methods that we have today.

• Discuss the importance and mention the different nursing organizations related to expanded
career roles of nurses.

- Professional development is a vital phase of lifelong learning in which nurses engage to develop and
maintain competence, enhance professional nursing practice, and support achievement of career
goals," according to the American Nurses Association (ANA) (2010).

Among more than 100 national nursing organizations, the ANA is one (Matthews, 2012). Nursing
organizations with a broad focus that covers the entire nursing profession include the American
Nurses Association (ANA) and the National League for Nursing (NLN). While others, including the
American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN), Society of Pediatric Nurses, National Association
of Orthopedic Nurses, and others, concentrate on advanced practice (Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse
Executives, and Nurse Educators), age (pediatric, geriatric), or healthcare settings (hospital, clinic,
surgical), disease processes (diabetes, renal, and cardiac), and healthcare settings (hospital, clinic,
surgical).

What's in it for me, you could be thinking to yourself. What role do nursing organizations have in my
career development? The explanation is straightforward: You connect with your colleagues when you
belong to a nursing organization. Nursing organizations may very well be the foundation of
professional development. When nurses band together, we have a far louder voice in the local, state,
and federal political spheres. Consider the recent controversies that resulted from a daytime talk
show's hosts mocking nursing as a respectable career. The show issued a formal apology as a result of
the nurses coming together, taking a position, and speaking with one voice. In a statement, the ANA
acknowledged the nursing community's outrage and apologized.

Being a member of a professional nursing organization gives nurses access to conferences,

opportunities for certification, role-related competencies, and continuing education. Nearly every
day, healthcare changes. By joining a nursing group that supports your area of practice or
specialization, nurses are better positioned to lead practice change. The use of evidence-based
practice is promoted and encouraged by nursing organizations among their members. The nursing
professional organization will provide continuing education that is relevant to their practice for nurses
who are certified in their speciality. Annual nursing conferences are held by numerous nursing
organizations. To exchange knowledge and best practices, these conferences bring together nurses
from all across the nation and frequently the world. Additionally, they provide a chance for
networking with nursing colleagues from throughout the world.

Development doesn't start when you pass the NCLEX; it actually starts when you graduate from
nursing school. Professional growth is a lifelong process that demands involvement on the part of the
individual. You should think about other options as you continue to advance as a professional nurse in
addition to joining a nursing group.

• How do the nursing education programs be beneficial in improving the factors that influence the
contemporary nursing practice?

- Nursing education programs includes the proper knowledge and the education that is needed for
our nurses to learn more on how to take care of a patient, what to do in a hospital environment, and
develop a nursing critical thinking where a nurse must always be prepared whenever they are going
to handle a situation that needs medical attention. All of our students nurses needs the influence of
nursing education programs in order to improve the contemporary nursing practice, through the
proper knowledge, us nurses can develop more if we have the proper education needed for us to
improve adequately.
