I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards: The learners demonstrate understanding of the structure of an atom and the formula and
the name of compounds.
A. ELICIT Drill
Reviewing Previous Review the symbols and charge of the common
Lesson or Presenting New elements encountered in compound. Answer
Lesson 1. AlCl3 1. Al3+ Cl-
2. Ba3P2 2. Ba2+ P3-
3. K2O 3. K+ O2-
4. Na3N 4. Na+1 N3-
C. ENGAGE
Presenting Examples / Reiterate to the learners the importance of the names and formulas of compounds. Make
Instances of the Lesson them recall the basic rules involved in formula writing and chemical nomenclature.
Point out that the formula gives qualitative and quantitative information about
the composition of a compound. It shows what elements make up the
compound (qualitative information) and the mole ratio of the elements
(quantitative information).
D. EXPLORE
Discussing New Concepts Discuss what is acid and its characteristics.
and Practicing New Skills An acid can be defined in several ways. The most straightforward definition is
1 that an acid is a molecular compound that contains one or more hydrogen atoms
and produces hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water.
Since acids produce H+ cations upon dissolving in water, the HH of an acid is
written first in the formula of an inorganic acid. The remainder of the acid
(other than the H) is the anion after the acid dissolves.
Formula for naming acids: Hydro- and Base name of nonmetal and -ic + acid. Example:
HCl is hydrochloric acid.
G. ELABORATE
Finding Practical Ask the learners to bring out their perfumes or any products they have in their bag.
Application of Concepts Ask them to cite some chemicals listed in the ingredients. Let them write the formula
and Skills in Daily Living of the compounds.
I. EVALUATE
Evaluating Learning Name the following acids.
1. HCl
2. HBr
3. HI
4. HF
5. H3P
