GENERAL CHEMISTRY 1 GRADE LEVEL: 11 STEM
SEMESTER: 2ND Semester/3rd Quarter

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards: The learners demonstrate understanding of the structure of an atom and the formula and
the name of compounds.

A. Performance Standards: The learners shall be able to

1. Describe the structure of an atom of an element.
2. Recognize and differentiate atoms, molecules, and ions; and
3. Write the formula and give the name of simple compounds.

B. Learning Competencies/ Learning Competency

Objectives: Write the LC  Name compounds given their formula and write formula given the
code for each. At the end name of the compound (STEM_GC11AM-Ic-e-23)
of the period, at least 75%  Practice chemical nomenclature: writing the chemical formulas of
of the students will be able ionic compounds; naming ionic compounds from formulas
to: (STEM_GC11AM-Ic-e-24)

Specific Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able:
1. Define acids and describe its characteristics.
2. Name acids given their formula.
3. Write the formula of acids given their name.

B. ENGAGE Communicate Learning Objectives

Establishing a Purpose for Introduce the following specific topics, then give the students a few minutes to write
the Lesson down what they already know or what they expect to learn under each topic.

 I will be able to define acids and describe its characteristics.

 I will be able to name acids given their formula.
 I will be able to write chemical formula of acids given their name.

C. ENGAGE
Presenting Examples / Reiterate to the learners the importance of the names and formulas of compounds. Make
Instances of the Lesson them recall the basic rules involved in formula writing and chemical nomenclature.

 Point out that the formula gives qualitative and quantitative information about
the composition of a compound. It shows what elements make up the
compound (qualitative information) and the mole ratio of the elements
(quantitative information).

D. EXPLORE
Discussing New Concepts Discuss what is acid and its characteristics.
and Practicing New Skills  An acid can be defined in several ways. The most straightforward definition is
1 that an acid is a molecular compound that contains one or more hydrogen atoms
and produces hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water.
 Since acids produce H+ cations upon dissolving in water, the HH of an acid is
written first in the formula of an inorganic acid. The remainder of the acid
(other than the H) is the anion after the acid dissolves.

Discuss the rules in naming binary acids and provide examples.

 A binary acid is an acid that consists of hydrogen and one other
element. The most common binary acids contain a halogen. The acid
name begins with the prefix hydro-. followed by the base name of the
anion, followed by the suffix -ic.

Formula for naming acids: Hydro- and Base name of nonmetal and -ic + acid. Example:
HCl is hydrochloric acid.

E. EXPLORE Present Seatwork No.

Discussing New Concepts Name the following acids. Answers
and Practicing New Skills 1. H2Se 1. Hydroselenic acid
2 2. H3P 2. Hydrophosphoric acid
3. H2S 3. Hydrosulfuric acid
4. HBr 4. Hydrobromic acid
5. HCl 5. Hydrochloric acid

F. EXPLAIN MINDS ON Evaluating the results of the tasks.

Developing Mastery Right after the exercise, learners will be called for (The learners will check the given
(Leads to Formative board work to present their solution. The tasks/activities)
Assessment 2) following will be processed: Reporting back. (The students will be
given opportunities to ask questions
 Evaluating the results of the tasks
with regards to the topic)
 Reporting back Clearing of Ideas. (The teacher will
 Clearing of Ideas clarify any misconceptions raised by
the students.)
