Cam-in-a-Box

You will need:


Corrugated card.
Brown paper tape.

The parts for this project are made

from corrugated card. Feel free to

recycle some old packaging!

Carefully cut out the parts using the

guide on the previous pages.

The base and top have the edges

folded up.

Score card then fold it as shown.

       
Find the centre of the sides by

drawing a pencil line along the two

diagonals.

Push a pencil point though the card

where the two lines cross. Repeat

with the second side..

       
Mark out the two circles of the cams using a pair of

compasses then pencil in your chosen cam profile. Carefully

cut them out. Use a pencil point to make the centre hole.

Experiment with different cam profiles!

Thread the two washers and two

cams onto a pencil.

       
Use strips of brown paper tape to

join together the sides and ends.

Note that the top and base fit inside

the sides. Line up the top edge of the

box sides with the top face of the

box top and base.

As you assemble the box, fit the cam

shaft into position

Tape the front and back of the top

and base into place.

       
With the box complete, push the

washers to the insides of the walls

and space out the cams.

Make the handle from a double

thickness of card then tape it into

place.

Tape on a short section of pencil to

complete the handle.

       
Pre-fit a couple of pieces of tape

onto the cam follower.

Fit the cam followers into place to

complete the project.

Use the Cam-in-a-box to drive your

own character based automata!
