INTRODUCTION
This unit covers the knowledge, skills, and attitude required to
productively prepare masonry/ concrete wall surfaces for plastering,
applying cement plaster and performing curing.
NOMINAL DURATION : 6 hours

Introductions:
The masonry trowel is used in brick or
stone work for levelling, spreading and
shaping mortar or concrete. They come
in several shapes and sizes depending
on the task. The following is a list of
the more common masonry trowels:
• Brick trowel: or mason's trowel is a
point-nosed trowel for spreading mortar
on bricks or concrete blocks with a
technique called "buttering".
• Bucket trowel: a wide-bladed tool for Components of a Bricklaying Trowel
scooping mortar from a bucket; it is also
good for buttering bricks and smoothing
mortar.
• Concrete finishing trowel: is used to
smooth a surface after the concrete has
begun to set.
• Corner trowels: used for shaping
concrete around internal or external
corners.

Spirit level: A spirit level, bubble
level or simply a level is an

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is used in accordance with Rule
1080 of Occupational Safety and Health Standards
Wall plastering is performed according to established procedures
Work area is cleaned according to safety and environmental
regulations (e.g. PD 1152 Section 6, 8 & 42)
Required output is completed as specified by the immediate
supervisor based on work schedule.

3. Before applying the second coat, damp the first coat evenly.
4. Apply the finishing coat with wooden floats to a true even surface and
using a steel trowel, give it a finishing touch.
