# IDEA FOR SPANS OF TRANSMISSION LINES

1. Normal Span :- The maximum span attainable with
a given structure height and a given conductor
clearance above ground level. Its use are limited
because of seldom ground level .

4/5/2023 Balbhadra Adhikari Page:4

2. Ruling span :- Ruling span is the span length used as a
basis for calculating the conductor sags and tensions,
constructing the sag template, and preparing the sag tables.
The ruling span for any section of transmission line having (n)
spans of lengths L1, L2, L3... Ln, between dead ends as
calculated as;

L1 3 + L2 3 + L3 3 + ⋯ + Ln 3
Rulling Span R L =
L1 + L2 + L3 + ⋯ + Ln

3 . Wind Span :- It is half the sum of adjacent spans

L1 + L2
Wind Span WS =
2
Note: Wind span increases if span between some adjacent
towers is long. In this case, use Anchor tower as back support
and to reduce wind span.
4. Weight Span :- It is used for Tower design or it is a
span that a particular tower is loaded with.
For plane/ flat terrain it is the half of the span on both
side while for having the different elevation levels, it is
the length in between the CG of both side spans of a
tower.

3. TRANSMISSION TOWERS

# TYPES OF TOWERS
1) BASED ON SHAPES OF TOWER
1. Vertical/ Barrel Type
2. Horizontal/ Wasp Waist Type
3. Delta/ Cat Head Type
4. H- Structure Type
5. Danube Configuration Type

2) BASED ON DESIGNATION
1. Suspension Tower (DA TOWER):-
(Up to 2 or in some cases up to 5 degree deviation angle.)
2. Tension/ Angle Towers :- used where the deviation angle
exceeds suspension tower. The types are;
1) DB Tower = used for deviation of (2°-15°)
2) DC Tower = used for deviation of (15°-30°)
3) DD/ DDE Tower = used for deviation of (30°-60°)
3. Transposition Tower :- used to transpose the phase into three
section and can be used up to 100 KM
4. Special Towers :- These are used in valley crossing, river
crossing or deviation above 60°

# TOWER SPOTTING
Tower spotting is performed to check ground clearance against hot curve
using standard sag template and to find tower height.

# TOWER SCHEDULING
Tower scheduling is performed to find tower type and
weight spans (both positive and negative) to be used
for tower design.
