Life in a Box
An old postcard, a map to a party, used postage stamps, a magazine, a piece of junk mail, some
wrapping paper and ribbon … Does this sound like a work of art or a load of old rubbish? In fact, these
are objects from a time capsule created by the world’s most famous Pop artist, Andy Warhol.
Before he died in 1987, Andy Warhol had filled more than 600 boxes with hundreds of thousands of
objects from his everyday life. Even when he was very young, Warhol liked collecting things. At the
age of nine, he collected photographs of film stars. There’s nothing unusual about that. However, his
later collections are truly amazing. From 1974 onwards, he always kept a brown cardboard box next to
his desk. Whether it was a letter from a film star or a receipt for some shopping, if he didn’t want to
throw an object away, he put it into the box, he closed it, he wrote the date on it and started another.
Warhol thought that the boxes were valuable. ‘Someday, I’ll sell them for $4,000 or $5,000 each,’ he
wrote in his diary in 1986. Many people agree with him. The boxes are now at the Andy Warhol
Museum in Pittsburgh, USA. In 2014, Warhol fans bought tickets to watch the opening of one of the
final boxes. One fan had paid $30,000 to help open it.
It’s true that many of the items are quite ordinary and appear worthless, but some of the boxes also
contain rare objects: a drawing that Warhol never exhibited, a photograph that he took … Some of the
items are simply bizarre: a fan’s toenail clippings, a piece of pizza, even a mummified foot.
Warhol’s art put everyday objects in the spotlight to make a comment on consumer society. Now, after
his death, the everyday objects of Warhol’s own life tell us a lot about the artist and society in the 20th
century. So, was Warhol just a person who was obsessed with collecting things or a person who
understood the importance of recording historical events of his time?

EARTH HOUR
Every year, in late March, people and institutions come together to switch off all non-essential lights for
sixty minutes at 8.30 p.m. local time. They do this to show their support for the fight against the climate
crisis and loss of biodiversity. Millions of people all around the world join in, as do governments,
businesses and institutions. By switching off their lights and measuring the reduction in the amount of
energy that is being used, people are showing that it is possible to make a difference.
The World Wide Fund for Nature in Australia introduced the idea in 2007 because they wanted to show
that climate change was a real issue and that when individuals work together, they can make a difference.
The first Earth Hour was held on 31 March 2007 at 7.30 p.m. in Sydney. More than two million residents
and 2,000 businesses turned their lights out for one hour. The lights also went out on the famous Sydney
Opera House. The people of the city of San Francisco were so inspired by the event in Sydney that they
organised their own 'Lights Out' event in October of the same year. This was the beginning of the Earth
Hour movement. In 2008, 35 countries and more than 400 cities joined in.
By 2012, 152 countries and more than 7,000 cities and towns were taking part. In recent years, the
numbers have kept increasing, with more than 188 countries and territories worldwide taking part each
year. In 2019, more than two billion photos were shared on social media platforms.
A number of celebrities have put their names to the cause, including singer Ellie Goulding, tennis star
Andy Murray, TV host Ellen de Generes, actor Leonardo di Caprio and ex-Beatle Paul McCartney.
Politicians and world leaders have also given their support, and thousands of famous tourist places have
turned off their lights, including the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Empire State Building in New York and the
Pyramids in Egypt.
The Earth Hour movement has achieved much more than just getting people to turn off their lights. Since
2007, among other actions, they have planted trees in various countries around the world, including a
2,700 hectare forest in Uganda and 17 million trees in Kazakhstan. They worked together to prohibit the
use of plastics on the islands of the Galapagos, one of the most important nature reserves on the planet.
And they have sponsored solar power projects in India and the Philippines.

A Beautiful Mind
This 2001 drama starring Russell Crowe, which won four Academy Awards, was loosely based on the
book of the same name about the life of the remarkable American mathematician, John Forbes Nash.
Nash has one of the most brilliant minds ever to emerge from the United States, but during his life he
has had to battle with a serious mental illness.
From an early age, Nash was interested in science, and by the age of twelve he was already carrying
out scientific experiments alone in his room. He spent very little time with his classmates, who rejected
him because of his superior attitude. When the Second World War broke out, other boys of his age
were imagining themselves as soldiers while Nash was inventing secret codes.
After graduating in mathematics Nash went on to develop his games theory at Princeton University
where he did his doctorate. This theory became known as the 'Nash equilibrium’, and it explains
business arrangements between competitors. The ‘Nash equilibrium' has been applied in the world of
business since the 1950s.
From Princeton University, Nash moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to teach
mathematics. There he met and married one of his students, Alicia López, but it was also there that he
began to experience symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia. This mental illness started to manifest first
in the form of paranoia; he believed that men who wore red ties were all part of a communist
conspiracy against him. Soon, he became unable to teach or do research and he was admitted to
psychiatric hospitals for treatment several times. Alicia divorced him and he spent the next twenty
years wandering around the campus at Princeton.
However, over the years his mental condition improved slowly, until in the late1980s, he began to
make contact with other mathematicians who realized that his new work had value. He was awarded
the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1994 and he and Alicia remarried soon afterwards. He had a post in
mathematics in Princeton until sadly on May 23, 2015, Nash, at age 86, and his wife were killed in a
car crash while riding in a taxi in New Jersey.

Brainpower
Your brain is like a sleeping giant. During recent years, research has shown the brain is much
more intelligent than we ever imagined. Even the commonly-heard statement that, on average, we use
only ten per cent of our brain may well be wrong. It now seems that we use even less than one per
cent, which means that an enormous amount of our brain can still be developed.
A good example of what the brain is capable of is a man called ‘S’. He was famous for having a
perfect memory. If you asked him what had happened to him on a particular day fifteen years before,
he could not only tell you but would pause for a moment and then ask, ‘At what time?’ His extraordinary
ability was studied for many years by a psychologist who finally concluded that, at a very early age, S’s
brain had the power to remember every detail about his life. Apart from that, S was like any other
human being.
Another example is a young man called Dario Donatelli. He recently graduated from a university
in Pittsburgh, where he specialised in techniques for remembering numbers. He describes himself as
quite normal, stating, ‘My memory is just like anyone else’s. There are probably hundreds of thousands
of people whose memories could work faster than mine if they had the same interest in numbers as I
have.’ He has broken the world record for memorizing the largest amount of numbers. He recently
memorized a number of seventy-three digits. When asked how he did this, he replied, ‘I group the
numbers into pairs, threes or fours, and I link them with something I am familiar with, for example, my
brother’s age, a date of birth, a month of the year, etc.’ However, realistically, could we all do the
same?
The important thing to remember is that our brain actually improves with time and practice. The
more we do to encourage it to learn, the more successful it will be. So, perhaps the best advice might
be to take a trip to the local library or bookshop, buy a book about something that has always interested
us but which we know very little about and remember to read it regularly. You will see how quickly we
can train our minds to learn something completely new and different. We may be surprised by what we
can achieve!

Dad had intended to drive, but even though he was used to driving miles without getting exhausted, he then read
on the website that the road wouldn’t be an easy drive, with a number of sharp bends. Anyway, we thought he
deserved to enjoy the fantastic views too, which he couldn't do as our driver. So instead, we persuaded him to
book discount bus tickets and off we went.
Our first stop was where wild kangaroos lived — and Dad and I were taking a walk when a big one appeared! For
a moment, it seemed to consider coming towards us, which made me slightly nervous — but then it went off along
the road, stopping to check if we were following. Although it was with us for a while, I was so excited I didn’t even
manage to pull out my camera. Then it looked back once more, and went off into the bushes.
That wasn't the only wildlife we saw. I thought it was unlikely for us to see Australia’s famous koala bears during
our short visit, as I‘d heard it was difficult to meet them — but we weren’t disappointed at our next stop. In fact, we
discovered there were around six million in that area! Sadly, some of the trees they were in had very few leaves
left, which people told us was because of the koalas, although I had read that lack of water is the real problem.
Still, I guess they looked cute, and were easy to find — we just followed the tourists looking up into the trees!
Dad had booked a campsite for the night, with ready-made tents — for an adventure! I wasn’t sure about that but
they were actually luxury tents, within walking distance of some famous rocks and other places we hoped to visit.
However, Dad also said the sounds of wild creatures would help us sleep. That sounded worrying — until the ’wild
creatures’ turned out to be frogs! So I was embarrassed by my fears — and kept awake by the frogs! But we had
fun making meals together — we‘d brought food, as we knew there'd be nowhere to eat.

Coasteering
Lily Carter had no idea what present she wanted for her 14th birthday. But she'd always been keen on
challenging sports, especially to do with water, like surfing and sailing. So when her parents heard about an
activity called coasteering — exploring rocks along the coast by climbing and swimming — they thought Lily
would love it. They found a course offered at an activity centre called Porthdean, just along the coast from
the family home, which was perfect. So after checking it was led by experienced instructors, they signed her
up.
Lily had seen a TV show about coasteering, and was interested in doing it, although she'd thought only
adults could take part. But then she discovered that on courses at Porthdean, there'd also be people her age
jumping from rocks into the sea, and also exploring caves — which she was never normally allowed to do,
so she really wanted to go. But she still asked her dad to go along too and, although he wondered whether
he'd like coasteering himself, he knew how much Lily wanted someone to accompany her, so he agreed.
Lily and her dad drove to Porthdean, where they attended a session with their instructors to learn basic
safety and techniques and be given helmets and special wetsuits to keep the cold out. The group they joined
was quite small, which meant they got lots of individual attention. Says Lily, 'The entire trip was awesome —
although the water was freezing! But our instructors encouraged the whole group so much, we were ready to
try absolutely all the challenges, even stuff we hadn't expected at all, like jumping off high cliffs! I must admit,
the one I jumped off wasn't that high, but Dad went much higher!
'Anyway, Dad and I hadn't realised how hard it would be physically, so we were glad we were fit,' explains
Lily. 'Even so, afterwards, we actually felt like we'd done loads of hard exercise in the gym! But I'll keep the
memories of that trip forever, I reckon. And the instructors are going to put a video of it onto the website, so
my friends will see it. They'd never believe me otherwise!'

TEENS FOUR FINAL EXAM Paper 4 (L)
Time allowed: 2 hs
SECTION A: Reading Comprehension
Read the text below and mark the statements true (T) or false (F).
Feed Me Better
'Feed Me Better' is the name of the campaign run by TV chef, Jamie Oliver, to improve eating
habits in British schools. Jamie is popular with young people all over Britain because of his cookery
programmes. His ingredients are fresh, his recipes are simple, and his meals are absolutely delicious.
He thinks that what we eat affects everything: mood, behaviour, health, growth, and even our
ability to concentrate. So when he found out what Britain's schoolchildren were eating at school, he
went on the warpath. He discovered that school dinners centred around processed food, chips and
burgers, and that children were incapable of recognising basic vegetables. So Jamie resolved to do
something about it. He was all about making radical changes to the school meals system and
challenging the junk food culture by showing schools can serve fresh nutritious meals that kids enjoy
eating. He was also sure that teaching children about food would allow them to make better choices
when eating.
He decided to make a four-episode documentary TV series called Jamie's School Dinners
which showed the successes and failures of his attempt to improve the dinner menu of a school in
Greenwich, London. He was assisted by the school dinner lady, Nora Sands, who was keen to learn
how to give the children a more balanced meal while not exceeding her budget.
At the same time as the programmes were being filmed, Jamie ran a national campaign called
'Feed Me Better’ to bring the state of the nation's school dinners to the attention of the government.
As a result of the 300.000-signature petition that Jamie presented to the Prime Minister of the United
Kingdom Tony Blair in the spring of 2005, new legislation was brought in to control school dinners.
Now children are promised two pieces of fruit with their meal, and fizzy drinks, sweets, chocolate and
crisps are banned.
Jamie Oliver has shown that it is possible to do something positive for Britain's schoolchildren
instead of just using them to make money. He has inspired people across the globe to see food and
cooking in a completely different way, engaging everyone to enjoy better food.
