The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of a growing global water crisis and called for urgent action to address it. He said humanity is draining and evaporating its lifeblood of water through overconsumption and unsustainable use, destroying ecosystems and contaminating groundwater. Developing countries are the most vulnerable to record inflation, soaring energy prices, and high interest rates, which could lead to debt defaults and crisis. Guterres urged countries to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and provide climate financing to developing nations, and proposed a Climate Solidarity Pact for big emitters to cut emissions and support emerging economies. The discussion focused on understanding the crisis from different perspectives, reflecting on feelings around specific incidents,

https://news.un.org/en/story/2023/03/1134887
Opening 2 min. Refer to call of UN Chief
In the coming half hour we are going to explore the issue of the global water crisis the world is facing on different levels. It would be wonderful if we could hear all your voices. There are no wrong or right answers. This no debate, this is a focused conversation in where we want to look at the global crisis from all possible levels and perspectives. Engage yourself in this conversation, listen as good as you can to what others have to say and contribute where you can.
Objective level 5 “We are draining humanity’s lifeblood through vampiric
overconsumption and unsustainable use, and evaporating it through global heating. We’ve broken the water cycle, destroyed ecosystems and contaminated groundwater.” What examples do we know? Have you read about such cases in the media? In what countries What happened exactly? What is divergence between developed and developing countries? What behaviors or responses did you observe? What feelings did you observe? Guterres also spoke about “Unless we take action now, record inflation, soaring energy prices and extortionate interest rates could lead to frequent debt defaults, with dire consequences for the poorest and most vulnerable,” he warned. “The divergence between developed and developing countries is becoming systemic – a recipe for instability, crisis and forced migration.” Have you heard of such incidents? Who are the most vulnerable? What happened exactly? Reflective level 5 (Refer to specific incidents) What feelings do these incidents bring out in you? What brought out anger? What made you confused? Are you scared? Have you noticed any inspiring elements? What gives you courage? Interpretive level 5 Can we begin to understand what is happening here? What makes the world leaders do what they do? Have we seen these kind of phenomena before in history? How have other groups dealt with these issues? What kind of changes do we want to see? What values are we holding here? Decisional level 5 The Secretary-General also called for addressing climate change, his final point. “Climate action and a sustainable water future are two sides of the same coin,” he said. He urged countries to “spare no effort” to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and deliver climate justice to developing countries. Mr. Guterres recalled his proposal to the G20 most-industralised nations to establish a Climate Solidarity Pact in which all big emitters make extra efforts to cut emissions.Wealthier countries would also mobilize financial and technical resources to support emerging economies.
What can we do?
As citizens? As Communication & Media specialist? Is there anything that you would want to change? Any concrete suggestions? Can we come to an agreement? What images would capture next step? What would help us to remember our intentions? Closure 3 Summary of all levels Thank participants for their contributions
