HISTORY

The first pregnancy resulting from egg donation

in an IVF cycle was in 1983

Egg donation plays an important role in assisted reproductive technologies

since it can be used to treat a variety of fertility problems.

For many years it was not possible to freeze eggs successfully and therefore
the only manner in which egg donation could take place was directly during a
fresh IVF cycle. About 10 years ago a new way of cryo-preserving embryos
was developed: vitrification. Vitrification is a method of cryopreservation that
uses extreme cooling speeds to avoid freezing and the associated ice crystal
formation. The result is much higher survival rates of embryos and also it
became possible to successfully cryo-preserve eggs too. The ability to cryo-
preserve eggs opened the option of creating egg banks similar to the donor
semen banks that have been in place for many years. Egg donors undergo
their ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval and then the eggs are vitrified and
stored. This allows the egg banks to develop a stock of eggs from which a
recipient can select the egg donor that she would like based on characteristics
of the donor.

The egg bank option removes the need to find someone who will donate eggs
for you. It also allows for a greater selection in terms of the characteristics
(such as eye color, hair color, height, education, etc) for you to choose from.

DEDICATED EGG
DONATION TEAM

At clinique ovo we understand that egg donation is a complex process and

for that reason we have a dedicated team of doctors and nurse coordinators
working to help you through every step. You will have access to the egg
donation nurse coordinators throughout your cycle with a specific email and
direct telephone number. They will help to explain the process both for the
patient recipient and the egg donor, and be available to answer any questions
that may occur along the way.

EGG BANKS

Vitrification of eggs is possible but it is a highly technical procedure that needs

to be tightly controlled in the laboratories that carry it out. Eggs are very
sensitive to being cryo-preserved which is why they could not be frozen in the
past. For this reason ovo cryo works with the best egg banks only to ensure
quality and maximise success rates. We have specially trained embryologists
who have been validated by the egg banks; in order to warm (thaw) the eggs.

Cycle process

Once you have selected the egg donor and your eggs have been received at
the clinique ovo the egg donation nurse coordinator will schedule your IVF
cycle.

You will take medication to prepare your endometrial lining to receive the
embryos. You will need to visit the clinic for ultrasound verification of your
endometrium: on average 1-3 visits per cycle.

Once your endometrial lining is ready, we can schedule the egg warming and
the IVF. On the day of the egg warming, your partner will need to produce a
semen sample; the warmed eggs are injected with a sperm from your partner.
The embryo transfer takes place 3-5 days later. The embryo is placed in the
uterus using a soft catheter under ultrasound guidance.

Two weeks after the embryo transfer you will have a pregnancy blood test at
the clinique ovo.
