FIELDTRIP MANUAL FOR ECOSYSTEMS AND

CONSERVATION (BIO652)
1. Objectives
The main objectives of this practical session are summarised in the following points:
1. To distinguish between the ocean and mangrove habitats.
2. To distinguish the main plant and animal species inhabited both ecosystems.
3. To learn the ecological importance of each studied habitat, and to distinguish the
threats faced by the flora and fauna within each natural habitat.

2. Material necessary for this practical session

- This practical manual (obligatory)
- Adhesive tape (obligatory)
- Notebook (obligatory)
- A hand magnifier (recommended)

3. Activities to do during this practical session

Observe thoroughly both ecosystems and answers these following questions

I. What are the characteristics of ocean and mangrove ecosystem?

II. What is the importance of the ocean and mangrove ecosystem in terms of
ecologically and economically?
III. What animals and plants can be found in the ocean and mangrove ecosystem?
IV. List two food chains that can be found in the ocean and mangrove ecosystem. Put
them in a diagram matter if possible.
V. What are the threats to the ocean and mangrove ecosystem?

Various plant species can be easily found in the ocean and mangrove habitats. Using the table
below, identify five plant species and complete the following table. Write down the species you
can recognise and also their main morphological characteristics (those used for their
identification). Stick a small piece of each species. (Do this table for both ecosystems).
Species Family Main morphological Stick a small
adaptations piece of plant

In the case study report, write an introduction for two different ecosystems, and answers all
those questions. Split between the ocean and mangrove ecosystems. Don’t forget to write the
conclusion. Citation is also compulsory.
