“Trees outside forests in India (TOFI)” programme:


 Jointly launched by the Assam Government and the USAID in Assam.
Goal: Expand tree coverage outside the traditional forest areas in the
northeastern state. 
Launched on Sep 8 ,2022.
The TOFI programme is a joint initiative of India and the United States to
increase green cover outside forest lands in India.
It was jointly launched by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and
Climate Change and the USAID.
It is implemented in 7 states – Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Haryana, Odisha,
Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh. The US has allocated up to
Rs.25 million under this programme.
GM Mustard:
DMH-11: Dhara Mustard Hybrid-11;
GEAC has approved the commercial cultivation of GM Mustard variety
DMH-11.
Developed by Scientists at Delhi University’s Centre for Genetic
Manipulation of Crop Plants (CGMCP).
It is a hybrid between two crops: Varuna and Early Heera-2;
Two genes have been introduced isolated from a soil bacterium called
Bacillus amyloliquefaciens:
1. Barnase- Varuna( blocks self pollination).
2. Barstar- Heera(blocks affect of Barnase and allows seeds to be
produced).
DMH has 28% higher yield than varuna.
55-60% of edible oil is imported by India.
Mustard(Brassica Juncea) is planted in Rabi season in MP, Rajasthan,
Punjab, Haryana.
It was first approved in 2017, Bt Brinjal was appoved in 2009.
It is the second GM Crop to be approved in India, first was cotton.
First such food crop that can be commercially cultivated by farmers.

WISER Programme:

Indo-German Science and Technology center.

WISER- Women Involvement in Science and Engineering Research.

It supports women scientist holding regular/long term positions in


academia or research Institute.

Max of 20 are awarded per year.

Electoral bonds:
The Union Government authorised the State Bank of India (SBI) for issue
of and encashing Electoral Bonds through its 29 Authorised Branches.

Electoral bonds are instruments through which anyone can donate money
to political
parties.

Validity: 15 days.

The identity of the donor is not revealed.

The party is allotted a verified account by the Election Commission of


India (ECI) and the electoral bond are transacted through this account
only.

Who can receive?

If any party that is registered under section 29A of the Representation of


the Peoples Act, 1951 and has got at least 1% of the votes polled in the
most recent General elections or Assembly elections then it can receive
electoral bonds.

The bonds are sold by the authorized branches of SBI. Bonds can be
purchased in the denominations of Rs 1,000, Rs 10,000, Rs 1 lakh, Rs 10
lakh and Rs 1 crore. There is no maximum limit for purchasing bonds.

The bonds can be purchased by any citizen of India. It can be purchased


for a period of ten days each in the months of January, April, July and
October or as per specified by the Government.

90th General Assembly of INTERPOL

As per 2011, linguistic census data, 19500 languages as dialects are spoken.

India at COP27:
India Pavillion: Theme of LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) which also
held discussions on various environmental concerns such as
decarbonization, climate resilience and more.
Loss and Damage: India welcomed the adoption of agenda item 'Loss
and Damage' at COP27. In UN climate talks, "Loss and Damage" refers to
costs already being incurred from climate-fuelled weather extremes or
impacts, like rising sea levels.
Clean, Green Energy: India is committed to clean and green energy
sources and the National Hydrogen Mission is a leap in that direction.
Mangrove Alliance for Climate: While addressing the launch of
Mangrove Alliance for Climate on the sideline of COP27, India stated that
to sustain the blue economy.
Climate Finance: India has once again stood up for climate finance.
Additionally, it also raised the matter of infrastructure resilience. It urged
the developed nations to take steps towards climate financing as
mitigation remains the focus for addressing climate issues.
Mangrove Alliance for Climate:
Led by UAE, Indonesia.
It also includes India, SL, Australia, Japan, Spain.
Launch: Nov 8.
Obj: preserve and restore mangrove forests.
Indonesia-19%, Australia- 10%, Brazil- 7%.
Mangroves: trees that occur in coastal intertidal zones.
It will help India in achieving its NDC of creating additional carbon sink
of 2-3 billion Tonnes of CO2 by 2030.
National Tribal Dance Festival:
Commenced in Raipur, Chhattisgarh on 1st November 2022.
3-day festival organised by the Chhattisgarh Tourism Board.
Over 1,500 local and international artists are expected to take part in
various activities in 3 days.
26 countries have shown interest out of which nine countries are going to
participate. The tribal artists hailing from Mozambique, Mongolia, Tongo,
Russia, Indonesia, Maldives, Serbia, New Zealand, and Egypt will perform
at the festival.
This time, two themes have been decided for the festival. The first
theme is ‘Tribal dance on Harvesting’ and the second theme is
‘Tribal Traditions and Customs’.

7th India Water Week:


1st to 5th November. Organised at India Expo Centre in Greater Noida,
Uttar Pradesh.
Theme: “Water Security for Sustainable Development and Equity”
The Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga
Rejuvenation, motive to raise awareness, conserve and use water
resources in an integrated manner.
Denmark, Singapore and Finland are the partner countries for India
Water Week.

Indian Biological Data Bank:


Set up at Regional centre for biotechnology, Faridabad.
Digital data will be stored on a four petabyte SC- Brahm.
Data from publically funded research will be stored.
At present data is stored outside India.
Genomic sequences are stored at this point, later protein sequence will
also be added.
It will help find the genetic basis for a disease and find targets for vaccines
and therapeutics.

RBI’s digital rupee pilot for wholesale starts Nov 1:


The first pilot for the digital rupee, wholesale segment (e₹-W) will
commence on November 1, the Reserve Bank of India said.
“The use case for this pilot is settlement of secondary market transactions
in government securities,” the RBI said. “Use of e₹-W is expected to make
the inter-bank market more efficient. Settlement in central bank money
would reduce transaction costs by pre- empting the need for settlement
guarantee infrastructure or for collateral to mitigate settlement risk.
“Going forward, other wholesale transactions, and cross-border payments
will be the focus of future pilots,” it added.
UNESCO report on Glaciers:
Glaciers in a third of World Heritage sites is set to disappear by 2050, says
a new UNESCO data.
The study conducted by UNESCO, in partnership with IUCN, shows these
glaciers have been retreating at an accelerated rate since 2000 due to CO2
emissions, which are warming temperatures.
Some of these endangered glaciers include the glaciers in Kilimanjaro
National Park and Mount Kenya (Africa); glaciers in Western Tien-Shan
(Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan) that have shrunk by 27% since
2000; The Dolomites (Italy) (Europe), Yellowstone National Park (North
America) among others.
There are 18,600 glaciers in 50 UNESCO World Heritage sites that cover
around 66,000 km2, representing almost 10% of the Earth’s total
glacierized area
Glaciers are vital for survival. Half of humanity is directly or indirectly
dependent on glaciers as their water source – domestic use, agriculture,
and power. These are also supporters of biodiversity, feeding many
ecosystems.

Indian Army registers exclusivity for ‘Combat uniform’:


The new ‘Digital Pattern Combat Uniform’ unveiled by Indian Army on 15
January 2022 (Army Day), has now been registered as intellectual property
right (IPR) to prevent its unauthorised sale and misuse.
Designed by National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).
Indian Army, keeping in mind the “4Cs” — comfort, climate, camouflage,
and confidentiality.
It is noteworthy that, the Indian Air Force (IAF) on its 90th foundation
day on October 8 this year, also unveiled the new disruptive pattern
combat uniform especially designed by NIFT.

The Wangala – 100 Drums Festival of Meghalaya:


The 46th edition of Wangala Festival, also known as the 100 Drums
Festival and one of Meghalaya’s most famous post-harvest carnivals,
began today, November 10, at Wangala Dam Chibragre near Tura in West
Garo Hills district.
Drums and bamboo flutes are played to the tunes of the folk songs of the
region

17th G20 summit:


Bali, Indonesia.
Focus: Economic cooperation.
The G20 represents almost 85 per cent of the global GDP, about two-
thirds of the world population and over 75 per cent of the global trade.

The theme of the G20 Summit in Bali is ‘Recover Together, Recover


Stronger’.

Three working sessions will be held as part of the G20 Summit Agenda.

These are food and energy security, health, and digital


transformation.

G20 started in 1999, it was formed to deal with economic cooperation.

The first G20 Summit took place in 2008 in Washington DC, US.

G20 Secretariat: The G20 has no permanent secretariat.

18th one will be in India.


PM Modi unveils India’s G20 mantra ‘One Earth, One Family, One
Future’ & Lotus as logo:
To spread India’s significant value system of ”Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’
and shower the compassion towards world, Prime Minister Narendra
Modi unveiled a Lotus with seven petals as the logo and ‘One Earth, One
Family, One Future’ as the theme of India’s G20 Presidency on 8th
November 2022. He also launched the website through video conference.
PM Modi said that the 7 petals on the Lotus represent the 7 continents of
the globe and also the 7 notes of music. “वसु धैव कुटु ं बकम् is the signature of
India’s compassion towards the world.

Asian Boxing Championships 2022:


India’s Shiva Thapa had to settle for a silver medal in the men’s
63.5kg category at Asian Boxing Championships 2022.
Indian boxers Lovlina Borgohain, Parveen Hooda, Saweety and Alfiya
Pathan claimed gold medals at the Asian Boxing Championships in
Amman, Jordan on Friday, November 11, 2022.
In the women’s 52kg division, Minakshi finished with a silver medal after
falling to Japanese bronze medallist Kinoshita Rinka, who was competing
in the event, 4-1.
The Asian Amateur Boxing Championships is the highest competition for
boxing amateurs in Asia. The first tournament took place in 1963, hosted
by Bangkok, Thailand.
